I totally understand actors not posing with people for pics I agree that it can get annoying and actors have a job to do,

i always try to take pics of the actors doing their thing, but i try to be fast

but, I thought it was okay to take pics of the actors by themselves, anyway to not say much about it, this was my experience (and probably a lot of people's experience too from what i could see) taking pics lol

Ok me trying to take pics: n5tnX.jpg

Did anyone else get told to leave a scare zone? Because I did. I was taking pictures with my D90 in Lady Luck's zone and I was told to leave, and then in Grown Evil one of the security guys told me to leave and to stop using flash when I clearly wasn't (I spent five minutes in front of this guy, literally). Anyways, not the best year for pictures, and it was pretty crowded when I was getting shots but I got some good ones I think. Just a little disappointed on how I was treated while I was in zones getting shots. I also made sure I wasn't in the way, I stood in a corner or against a wall/gate when I was taking pictures.

I got told to leave Your Luck Has Run Out as well. I hadn't spent but two mintues in the zone and was even standing by a wall. Oh well...

Chip and Veritas,, thanks for the compliments. :)

sure did, I was yelled at by a security guy for no reason, well let me explain, I was trying to take pics at Canyon of Dark Souls, and the guy told me MOVE TO THE SIDE, PICS TAKEN ON THE SIDE, so I was like, okay sure no prob, I moved away from the walk-path

then 2 minutes later 2 girls were asking an actor to take a pic, the actor ignore them and the girls got upset, the guy saw them and told them to get lost, then he saw me with the camera and he started yelling, NO PICTURES, NO PICTURES EITHER GO IN THE SCAREZONE OR LEAVE!!!!! I was like, wtf?

I mean, I have FFP so It did bothered me a little that the actors or security won't let any pics and the security won't I understand some people take advantage, but i get to go back, so whatever,

but sometimes I feel kinda bad for the people that spend so much to come from other states or other places to try to enjoy their one night here and they get this, that's what I don't know what to think about, we all love halloween horror nights and we love having pictures of the zones as memories of the amazing job everyone does from the set people to the costume people to the actors, I was afraid all the complaining last year was going to lead to this,

anyways

I had no problem before tonight. 7 is made for pictures but Your Luck Has Run Out and Canyon of Dark Souls are pretty crowded and narrow. I can understand wanting to keep people moving. The actors really seem annoyed by people taking pictures now. It definitely ruins some of the fun. Universal has really become bad this year with pictures across the board.

yeah I agree about Luck has run out, I can see it being a problem, what I didn't get is why tell me to go to the side in Canyon to tell me to get lost 2 minutes later, lol that made no sense,

and the actors, I can understand the flash being a annoying, and I will admit I was using flash in Acid Rain so, that was My bad. But the pics i was trying to take of grown evil were during the day, in Grown Evil they just don't want you to take pics. not even by the side, Im thinking, if you are not using flash, you are not in the way of anyone (meaning you are in the side) and you are not bothering anyone, could it be okay? I don't know, I just hope I wasn't bothering anyone when trying to take pics lol

I haven't been asked to leave a scarezone (yet), but I was told that I couldn't "stop a scareactor for a photo." Seeing as how I never "stop" anyone, but I simply ask if I may take a photo (and whether the scareactor stops or not is their prerogative), I didn't think much of it.

It seems to me that consideration is key: scareactors are there to scare. Period. That's what they get paid to do during HHN, so let them do their jobs. In the meantime, stay out of their way and try not to blind them with camera flashes (or autofocus lights). If there should be a moment when the crowd thins a bit, step up and ask (nicely) if you can take their photo. If they say yes, take your photo and let them get back to work. If they say no, move on and don't take it personally (and don't take the photo anyway).

As far as the escorts (or whatever the uncostumed people in the zones are called), they're there to protect the scareactors. Some of them are relaxed, some are overprotective and others are enjoying the brief power trip that HHN gives them. If they give you grief, just move on and come back later. It's not worth ruining your evening when you've got multiple scarezone options (and 8 houses you can enjoy).

A couple of things that I try to abide by:

- There's a lot of fog this year, which makes camera flashes nearly unusable. You're just going to blind yourself (and everyone around you) if you're trying to use a flash in a foggy zone.

- Some of the zones are extremely dark to shoot at night. Instead of using your flash, get creative. Try long-exposure shots (see some great stuff by Nick Chandler and Mark Walter), silhouette shots (see shots like THIS ONE) or even getting to HHN earlier and shooting while there's still daylight.

- If you're just not getting the shots you're hoping for, brush up on your photography basics. Try some test shots in a dark room at home and play around with your ISO, f-stop and shutter speed.

- Or, try some new equipment. There are shops that rent camera lenses, bodies, flashes, etc. by the week (some are even by mail!), so you can try before you buy.

Anyway, those are just my own (unsolicited) sentiments on the matter.

As far as photos go, it's been a week or so since I've uploaded anything new. I'm currently working on a big new batch, so I'll be posting them here (and on HHNinPhotographs.com, and on my Flickr page) over the next couple of days.

I went last night for the first time ever, (OH MY GOD, AMAZING) and aside from being told to not stop a scareactor for pictures, it was kind of funny how the scareactors reacted to cameras. The bats in Grown Evil shielded their faces with their wings, I took a picture of one of Lady Luck's minions and he was not happy....he then proceeded to come after me hahaha. Lady Luck's minions ran away, and so did the ugly lady luck (all in the scarezone by the front of the park with Lady Luck and her minions). I gave up eventually trying to take pictures, not just because of that, but because my camera is not very good :P

It's a no-win situation for Universal. If they're lenient with pictures, the zones become photo ops rather than scare locations (see last year). If they design the zones to be photo unfriendly and are very strict about no photos (at least posed photos), then they get ire from the photo junkies. There's really no way to find a happy balance short of having a few photo friendly zones and a few photo unfriendly zones (I guess you could make the argument 7 is supposed to be the photo friendly zone, but I've found that the escorts in there are as aggressive as their scare actor counterparts.)

For me, I'm divided. The photos were out of control last year (even though I know Fear Revealed was sort of supposed to be a photo zone) and I'm kind of glad they're moving back towards more scare-fueled streets. That said, the photography I see here every year is absolutely astounding and I hate to lose some of that beautiful art... then again, a truly great photographer can handle most any subject regardless of conditions, and you all have adapted well.

Its nothing against you personally, however when you have come to a scarezone later you are coming in after however many jerks we have had that night with a camera and we are at our wits end. Last night was horrible for pictures, people using a flash about 1 foot from my face, trying to take inappropriate pictures (lucky girls are wearing skirts, and people can be rude), and even if people "ask" if they can take a picture and you say no, they will still take it anyways. But also if a Guest sees us allowing pictures from someone who is being respectful (such as yourself) it only takes them a moment to start throwing a fit because we are allowing someone else to take a picture but not them. I wish I could tell you a work around, there is the new photo op at the front of the park, and plenty of scenic shots to take around the park. I'm sorry if you thought we were rude, honestly after about 5 camera flashes to the face, I'm halfway to a migraine, and a scareactor with a migraine makes for poor scares. Which let's face it you're there for the scares! :) Hope you come back and let us scare you!

\wow is nice to hear from an actor,

I just have some questions, What if the pics are taken during the day with no flash? and what if the people taking the pics are not asking you or stopping you but just taking pics of you scaring other people, that is taking pics of actors while doing their job, makes no difference? I'm just wondering since the real problems seem to be Flash, and stopping actors and asking, but like Goo said, being in the corner of the zone taking pics of the actors working but still get yelled at for even doing that, just wondering,

or even, What about video? during the day ( I mean when is not dark) walking through the zone filming? because the creatures at Grown evil hide as soon as they see any camera

and about the scenic shots around the park, well, last year was amazing to take pics of the park, , but, this year, the best thing in the streets are the actors, besides that, there really isn't that much going on,

what's told to us is "NO PHOTO OPS" by definition that means to me that no lining up with people throwing a peace sign up and actually posing for a shot. As a scareactor I have a job to do. As a guest since HHN Thirteen , I realize just how much money is spent getting in there and wanting to take as much of it home with you as possible. At least a hundred times a night after scaring someone the iimediate response is " I wanna pic of you " at which time I then walk away...My suggestion is ..in the scarezones , stay on your toes and be ready or hang out a bit and eventually you'll get some really cool action shots...Wilbur has been been in my zone many times and gotten tremendous shots not just from the Assault but from everywhere else in the park as well follow his lead on the previous advice he's given and you'll wind up getting some great shots..A Scarezone is exactly that , a SCAREzone..I can't speak for anyother zones but so far the only ones that have been asked to leave are the people that are harrasing us as we're doing our thing .. And as always I thank you and everyone else who makes it possible for me to live the nightmare.....I'll be seeing you soon....

A few of the photos from my most recent batch. In some of these, I'm following the lead of Nick and Mark and attempting to do my own long-exposures. Some of the turned out nicely, others not so much. It's all experimentation.

I'll be uploading more each day, so (again) keep checking my Flickr gallery, my Facebook gallery (if you'd like to tag someone), and HHNinPhotographs.
