HHN XXI Speculation

Don't expect all the houses to have an over-arching "Gambling" theme this year. Remember, in the past there was no connection between the houses. That only come about in the last six years. Even last year, there was no truly advertised connection that brought everything together. I'm going to preemptively state that it might be best not to get hung up on "gambling" as a theme for much outside of marketing the event.

I'm going to be very honest, I'm not to excited about this theme. But that is mostly because I never really liked gambling themed haunts or casino themed haunts. I can see a Casino being one theme for one haunted house, but not entire event where there are going to be six or seven other haunts. I mean really, with the theme hint given what houses do you think could be made out of this?

House themes:

Casino

Gangstas

All we know so far is that it's a gambling theme, and the House always wins. Might not be Vegas/Casino themed, but deal with gambling. The music is definitely giving me that 20s/30s prohibition era feel that Legacy mentioned. I'm not feeling Vegas from this initial site. Gambling, gambling for your life, chance - these themes can go over many different genres of houses.

I think having this whole casino/1920's sort of vegas theme could be interesting, though I am curious as to how they'll incorperate it throughout the entire park.

As far as an icon goes, I think the most obvious guesses at this point would be some sort of evil Blackjack dealer......Lady Luck(which is far fetched but Im still hopeful lol)...or maybe even the House itself. The House I feel could be personified as a group of people. Either way, we have an interesting couple of months ahead of us.

The whole thing seems to be tempting fate; putting your fate into someone else's hands. I wonder where this will lead. And yes, I think the whole "the house always wins" kind of motto could turn into our tagline.

All in all a pretty interesting site. I look forward to see what we have coming next. Hopefully Universal has heard our cries for websites ala 2008.

Ps- IN regards to some kind of zombie apocolypse I dont think that'll happen. Not only has HOS annoucned they'll be doing some kind of zombie icon/theme of sorts, I can't see HHN building their entire event around something. (at least I hope not. I find zombies to be terribly dull if not done perfectly)

I really like that idea. Considering the website says nobody beats the HOUSE. It sounds like the House is one entity, perhaps our icon(s)

Gangsters, not gangstas...two different beings. Same purpose, but you can't really compare a lion to shark....Real life mobsters would torture cheaters and traitors in some terribly brutal ways (instead of just shooting you) and the St Valentine's Day massacre was horror, pure and simple.

I also remember lots of creepy TV things dealing with casinos; Angel:The Series had a couple of super spooky eps involving casinos. Star Trek:The Next Generation had one where they were trapped in a melodrama and couldn't escape....it sounds silly, but it was pretty creepy for ST. Supernatural had the wonderful Irish witch/gambler who would bet with the years of your life. Oh, and one of the most amazing pieces of music ever written, the Carmina Burana, was about not only about morality and religious tenants, it also had drinking and gambling. O fortuna, indeed.....

The music and look of the initial site opens up great stuff for me from Film Noir to German Expressionism. I love the style and the look and they could use lots of very current themes, including games like Bioshock and LA Noir. There's also lots of great lit from that time period, HP Lovecraft, Ray Bradbury, and even dear old Charles Addams. There was also the Invasion from Mars radio scare.

There's LOADS of stuff they can use. I can't wait to see what's next!!!

ps There's also this! It was on demand a few months ago....

Haunted Casino

Just looked at the facebook post and they capitalized House but not fate.

It could be a personification or a group of people, but I would bet on it (anybody makes a crack about that pun and I will MURDER you) just referring to the casino in general. I'm picturing the theme being based around a deadly, probably supernatural casino (perhaps one that only appears in a certain area on a certain date?) where players gamble with their lives and every game is rigged to let the House win. The houses and scarezones could be justified as being examples of the "games" that you have to play to see if you survive; can you make it through the mazes with your life? With suspension of disbelief in place, you're taking a "gamble" by entering any of the various deadly environments.

I have heard things from a reliable source (the same one who told me about a Cindy house long before any evidence was given) before the website update occurred. Definitely expect a house based on a casino, probably in a soundstage or the parade building. I wouldn't be surprised to see a casino or playing card theme for one of the scarezones, probably by the entrance.

Hopefully the theme might give us a better park entrance this year, or at least something on the scale of 2009 if not 2007.

Well, I don't know why I didn't think of a gambling theme sooner. Especially with it being HHN 21...the blackjack connections and all, not to mention that HHN is legally able to drink in the US. ;)

But I think the theme of gambling would work, especially if kept to that 1920's gangster-esque theme mentioned before. Or maybe that's just because I love vintagey things in general. But that would be interesting to say the least.

But we know A&D likes to twist things up, so I'm expecting to see something a bit more interesting than just a scary blackjack dealer or possessed casino.

When I think of the event being centered around this single haunted casino, it makes me think back to 09 with the Universal Palace Theater. Everything that happened that year happened because of the UPT but we still had the Usher, who served as the theater's right hand, so to speak. Maybe we'll have something like that this year. Maybe we'll get a dealer or something along those lines whose fufilling his/her duties to the casino. Maybe it's contorlling them?

I'm not hung up on the idea, but am not fond of the vibe I'm currently getting. I wish I could go to HHN this year, mostly because I'm still a virgin in that regard, but then again I'd rather be scaring people and watching the event from the side lines. I started following this event back with Islands of Fear, and have followed it ever since. I'm enjoy filling in the blanks of what a house or zone looked like through other's perspectives. It is almost as fun for me as actually attending the event.

Still to early for me to say, but so far, I'm not a fan of the current ideas.

It would be cool to see some physical representations of the actual cards used to play the games.

For example, I could definitely see a "Suicide King" character either walking the streets (or in the main house) complete with a sword through his head (or maybe even carrying his own head!)

A "one-eyed Jack" character with a Cyclops-style deformity would be pretty snazzy as well.

Really looking forward to see how Uni runs with this theme

Hmm i agree with you to some extent, but the houses that year were mostly all film's, and the problem with this year's theme is the houses cant all be based on blackjack etc and new idea's may arise.

We started discussing the gambling theme back in May. If you go to page 35 of speculation, you can see our original ideas!
