HHN XX Rants

Usually I have had good experience with ops as a guest. I did they they kind of fell short a little in the Legendary Truth house last Thursday. There was a girl in front of me with 4 guys. She was COMPLETELY drunk, so much they had to hold her up to have her walk. I told 3 people in line working for Uni that she was totally drunk. You could easily see it, she couldnt stand up straight. We got to the front of the line and I told that person. They let her go in anyway where she proceeded to almost fall over in every scene, stumble and stop randomly, started screaming in the room with the girl on the bed - which she fell into and tried to kick the scareactors that are statues as well as the ones at the end. NO ONE ever stopped her or kicked her out. I flagged the first cop we saw when leaving the house and he listened. They were then pulled to the back where I am sure they were escorted out. Now, I understand when one person screws up and doesn't do their job but that night (it was around 930 or so), they all did. Me and the people behind me let people monitoring the line know she was extremely intoxicated - no one cared. She could have hurt herself, certainly tried to hurt the scareactors with kicking and no one cared... Why did it take me (a total bystander) to finally get someone to do something???

2 off the top of my head.

- Wait times never being right.

- Universal Employees stationed in the houses need to get off their high horse. If you tell me to put my camera away and I do don't continue to follow me and tell me to put the camera away.

That is all for now...

I'm glad you piped up, honestly. I appreciate what the Ops do during the event. I've seen far too many people get scared into a boo-hole across from me to the point where I actually requested an Ops member be in my room. I'm glad they are there. I also know how management wants to see 1,000 people through a house every hour, and that can only happen with an hour long wait and a fast moving congo-line. I know the Ops's job is even more thankless than the scaractors, because even though the scaractors get abused regularly we are still the "stars" of the event.

That said, and I'm sure you will agree with me, there are definitely some poor Ops personnel who either need to be better trained or have a better disposition. I've lucked out with fun, patient Ops in my room, but I've also had Ops personnel tell guests to keep moving forward while we are (intentionally) scaring them back. I've also had an Ops person stare about me for a full minute when I went to the exit to try and get security. She never bothered to flag one down, and the guy walked out. Those are the Ops people hate, and we have all experienced them. For every Ops person who is never noticed (and there are a ton), there are two who futs something up and give the entire crew a bad name.

If you're a good Op, thank you so much for what you do.

Completely agree.

me too,but i have a question?

to become event staf,do u have to work at uni or is thatr something they hire for?

To my understanding, nearly all the Ops are regular UO, rank-and-file, employees who have been scheduled to set up queue lines and hold a flash light. It's definitely not something I have ever heard of Universal hiring outside help for. The technical side of the house is predominately seasonal technicians, which they hire in a similar manner to the scaractors.

Around September Universal usually hires for operations people if they need more. These people are usually seasonal, given a "home attraction", and then work as operations for the houses. Afterwards they might go work that home attraction or leave.

Thank you. Speaking for all of the Operations team, we all greatly appreciate that...and you're a 100% right! There are absolutely lazy, and un-qualified people out there doing the job that definitely shouldn't be but for one of them, there's ten good ones. Again, thank you for realizing how important that job is.

The people that make up the operations team for each of the HHN houses are from the Attractions-Operations team and each of the houses has it's own Supervisor (that is already a supervisor for an attraction in one of the parks) as well as lead attendants, then the regular attendants. The supervisors will take a good majority of the staff from their own attraction to work the houses..this goes for leads as well. Some times, you have to ask a supervisor to be able to work with their team at a specific house. The company hardly ever just hires people to work for HHN itself..maybe you'll be hired for Attractions around that time and you can get on a team some where, but they don't just hire operations team members just specifically to work HHN and that's it. So, if you really want to work the event, try and go for attractions. That's your best bet...or, audition to be a Scareactor.

They do actuaaly hire for HHN alone though. Around August or September they hold a job fair to put people in these positions. Working as an ops. staff for two years I met alot of people who were hired in for HHN and then stayed on in attractions attendents roles afterwards.

It's very possible that particular Op did not see you actually put the camera away. Or, if you all you did was turn it off, that's not enough. They want to see it in your pocket or bag. Turning it off and carrying it in your hand means that you can just as simply turn it back on.

It's their job, and they are trying to do it completely. You are not suppose to be taking pictures or filming in the houses. That's why they post signs. They are enforcing the rules of the park that, if you don't follow, Universal has the authority to kick you out of.

I usually make fun of the workers in the parking garage who waive a flashlight and tell you where to park. Well, not anymore. On Sunday, 10-3-10, there weren't any around and all I can say is that parking was a disaster. Nobody knew where to go. People were cutting each other off. Nobody followed anybody else and you had to fend for yourself.

In theory it shouldn't be an issue. They are only supposed to ask you to put up the blinkies but that doesn't always work out.

This! When I went on the 30th there were people driving in the walkway, it was a catastrophe....we were driving to our parking spot, and there's a friggin SUV on the right hand side trying to pass us. Really?! Are you really that impatient that you MUST pass someone in a parking garage to get to a parking spot before them? We ended up matching their speed (please note, that I was not driving lol) so they couldn't pass us, and then taking a pretty nice parking spot before they did. We hopped out of the car and walked briskly to avoid a confrontation from a road rage addled idiot, which we get a lot of here in Florida.

I didn't even think about it until you mentioned it, since I went straight into the event afterwards and forgot about all of my worries.

you say that now until you get decked in the face and you NEED one of them.

also, they usually tend to be attraction attendants/leads.

edited to add: I'd talk to your ASM/SM about any problems you may have, including ops. I had to in Cleaver last year and it was fixed pretty fast.

I was almost hit before and they were useless, I had to just handle it myself by getting security at the exit.

And my biggest complaints with them are:

I was a guest one night and told to move faster while there was someone in front of me and i couldnt move faster

And when they are in a room with me, they get flashlight happy and blind me or reveal Im there.

Plus if the problem gets fixed, then they just rotate in the house and the problem starts all over again

I originally liked the idea of pulsing but I think it's going too far now. I do the nightly HHN wait time updates on my phone and every house is a 30 or 45 minute wait on a thursday early in the event. Not only that....but Hallow'd Past said 60 MINUTES.

I'm afraid to find out how much they are pulsing those lines if they got Hallow'd past up to a 60 minute wait...

You bring an Excellent point, and one of my rants I guess, It is really annoying when people go inside a house with the glowing sticks and bracelets and the blinking horns or glasses, they ruin the experience,

I went to Hades last week and there was a black girl that had glowing horns behind me, I was waiting for someone to tell her to turn them off but they never did, and the problem is not so much the glowing, but the blinking, they were driving me insane, not only you could see where every actor was hiding, but the blinking on the walls was really annoying, I know those blinking things are really cool, I have some at home, and the drnking cups are nice too I have one and I like them, But inside the house is really bad,

I don't know I guess the glowing sticks are not as bad as the Blinking stuff.

I didn't say anything and just kept walking, I didn't wanted to be mean, but if I didnt have frequent fear pass and that was my only night it would have ruin the house for me.

I wonder what do the Actors think about this?

I wonder if it bothers the actors when people have those, or do they like people having them?

I hate them too, I sometimes won't even try to scare them because theyre so bright. No matter how scared they looked I rarely scare a blinking cup person.

I've done the same in the past. I won't even try to scare/preform if it's too bright or if their blinking makes me feel like I'm going to have an epileptic seizure -not that I know what that actually feels like, but it can still be stressful-. The merchandise I dislike the most is the glowing lightsabers... Seriously, completely straight faced, who thought that selling those was a GOOD idea? Whoever made that decision needs to share the same pleasurable experience as some of us scare-actors have had: being poked backward through a boo hole, in full costume, by a drunk with one of those things who just won't letup. Needless to say, it's not fun.

Last year, I was going after a girl and didn't realize she was carrying one. Luckily, I was wearing a mask and so the sabre hit my mask and not my face. It was just jolting to be going after someone and having something you didn't see, hit you in the mask.
