The Director of Horror Posted July 2, 2011 Share Posted July 2, 2011 So, I was thinking about the back story and premise possibilities if there is to be a male/female duo as icons. The first thing I thought of was killers or what have you that took advantage of Black Tuesday and the Great Depression to entice people to wager their lives for monetary security. But wasn't the back story for the LT house last year was that the couple or husband murdered everyone at their party on Black Tuesday? Do you guys think that if there is to be a duo this year that their story would be based off the Depression era? Or maybe during the 20's this possible couple was so disgusted with the consumer culture and lust for money that decided to kill people? I'm just tossing ideas out there to see if any stick or even sound remotely possible. That's actually very good thinking. During this years Attraction Ops Awards at USO two of the Horror Nights guys came out and were talking about HHN 21. They really didn't say anything in regards to this year's theme or what have you, but The Caretaker did come out on stage after about a third of the way through their spiel. Now I am wondering why The Caretaker came out versus Jack. I guess probably because The Caretaker's costume and makeup is easier, but why even have an icon come out at all when all they were doing was getting the people in Attractions excited for HHN 21 and how they are ushering in a completely new era. They then told us they were going to show us concept art work for one of their new houses. When the slide came up it was just a stick figure walking into a crudely drawn house; the next slide was of said stick figure running away from the house with a stick figure guy wielding a chainsaw in pursuit. While everyone was laughing The Caretaker came from back stage and sneaked up behind the two guys. The Caretaker then said something, although I can't remember what. The Caretaker onstage probably was Bryce (especially if he spoke, and he is the only official "talking" Caretaker) and they used him because he was available. They obviously weren't going to show anything from this year (with the joke concept art), and that would go doubly for the icon. I did it on my vacation ) I see a lot of things thrown about but a lot of it just seems a little crazy. It is obvious we will have at least one casino house. I would say it would be a big production so either the parade building or or a sound stage. The music is early 19th century... So it could have a teens-30's feel... but they like to use old music and art deco so to me it is almost given we will have an old abandon casino. I also think that this house will have the icon or (if there isn't one) will be the focal point of the event. On the Card Hand... Ace/Queen is clearly a winning Black Jack hand (21 being obvious) but it is also singlehandedly the biggest trouble hand in poker. This to me just implies danger, gambling, and unfair odds. (The severed hand says you cannot win and points to the dead man's hand in poker as well). There is cigarette smoke which in classic noir implies mystique or even nihilism and anomie. The latter implying the hopelessness and abnormality of the situation. Cigarettes, in film, were also very popular up until WWII. So again points to the early 20th century. "Nobody beats the house" was the name of an episode of Cannon back in 1972 in which Cannon faces a mob kingpin threatening the life of a gambler's wife. Toby Hauser has accumulated 200,000 dollars in game debts. When he hides away his wife asks Cannon for help. Toby wants to put everything on a map. This game should be his last. Either he wins, or he dies. Obviously the mob and the early (and violent illegal gambling) years of Las Vegas comes to mind... along with cowboys... All of which fit nicely into the time from 1911 -1930's... So My thought is this house will be set during that time frame. I like the idea of a old forgotten casino with a grudge (Like the Overlook) whether an icon fits I don't know. Could be fate or death personified as a dark cowboy, mob boss, cheated gambler... or literally anything they want to make fit it. What I don't see: Cindy, Chance (the Clown)... or anything from the past icon-wise. Just let it die people... NEW ERA... I CAN see a movie house. It was stated last year that there were no movie house... BUT not this year. Universal is all about movies so I expect a movie house at this point with the lack of one last year. I expect it to be some thing Universal owns so as not to be an IP issue. So that is my 2 cents. OH and I noticed BM is back in the archives... She was completely removed last year. So that is good. strangeoneout Posted July 3, 2011 Share Posted July 3, 2011 (edited) So I was in attendance at the Event dealing with the Caretaker. It was a team member recognition event called the AOA's. Basically all the attraction team members get together and awards are given out such as best team lead, spirt of universal award etc etc etc. In addition to this team members representing each attraction also make videos and submit them and an award is given to the best made video. (A good example of this is a video from a few years ago made by JAWS that you can find on youtube called "How to tune a fish") This year for the awards they added best HHN house. Obviously the winner was already announced at the end of HHN but they still had two presenters come out to give out the award. Before they announced the winner however they told all the team members they where going to give "an exclusive first look" at this years event concept art. They asked all team members to put away and turn off all cameras and phones as they would not be allowed to take photos of the concept art. This was simply to just add credibility to the set up for what was a prank/joke. They then proceeded to show stick figure drawings of guests entering a haunted maze called "Haunted House" and then a stick figure of a guy with a chainsaw chasing other stick figures. All of this obviously being shown as a joke. However, unknown to the two presenters while they where flipping through the slideshow of "concept art" Bryce dressed as the Caretaker was sneaking up behind them. One of the presenters eventually noticed him and flipped out because he was a huge fan of the Caretaker and this had obviously been setup by someone as a surprise for him. Bryce proceeded to stand on stage and make random non in character comments obviously just enjoying the moment. So the Caretaker's presence means nothing more than he is a part of HHN and the presenter just happens to be a big fan of the event. No need to look any further into it than that. For instance, slot machines, poker, blackjack, roulette/craps, and possibly events such as dog racing, horse racing, and jai alai. Then I thought how these are all a little different. A slot machine basically has a computer that generates random numbers and creates visual displays for winning combinations (pulling a lever or pressing a button does nothing at all). In poker you are testing your skill against other people. In blackjack you only have one opponent; the dealer which represents the casino. In roulette and craps you rely on a device (i.e. a ball or die) and it's a matter of probablility. With animal racing or jai alai you are placing wagers on others while spectating. Even though Universal doesn't have to have an overall connection for the houses and scare zones to the theme/icon, I thought it was interesting that you can utilize various forms of conflict. I'm a newbie to the boards so take it easy one me, but I definitely see the main icon being the Queen of Spades, and Death a male icon (the ace of spades), and what if the 3rd card was like a minion to the Queen like a Knave of Spades? He goes out and does the dirty work for the Queen and brings poor souls to Death and give them a wager they cant possibly turn down, but no way they can win. The first was because the scarezones in kid zone and the area right in front of Animal Actors where cirque du freak was caused to much confusion for most guests. They would walk through the area get turned around and get lost or not able to find the entrance to the houses. This is the main reason Silver Screams always had a short wait. Guest would could find kid zone would see the two houses and say hey I know what chuckie is but not Silver Screams. Enter the chuckie house and be dumped back out by MIB. Then when they walked back through cirque they'd get turn around and unable to find their way back in to Kid Zone. Also, there has been several Chain Saw scarezones set up in front of Disaster over the past few years that the event moved back to Uni in 06. "Your" hand is the two face-up cards: The Ace and Queen. The third card has nothing to do with it. The game is Blackjack/21. That's the game you have to focus on because this is the 21st year of Horror Nights. I'm 100% confident that you have to focus only on the two face-up cards. Ignore the third card.
