Halloween Horror Nights (Hollywood) 2013 Wishful Thinking

Recommended Posts

This just popped into my head, but who would like to see USH try an "upcharge/extreme/interactive" maze like Knott's did this year? Orlando's been toying with the idea for YEARS now and I think it'd be a cool idea :)

I realy hope they dont to be honest Universal is already more money than knotts, I dont mind paying it cuz its worth it but an upcharge maze at uni would just be a huge pain in the ass and wallet if Im gonna pay 45 to 67 I wanna be able to do everything without having to shove out 60 dollor more

I think it would be an interesting idea, but I think next year could be one of the hardest for the creative team in terms of space issues... The T2 location could be in trouble if construction is still going on during the summer for the rumored Despicable Me replacement of T2 (December 31 is said to be T2's last performance.) And then construction for the Harry Potter will no doubt cause some problems as well. I'm hoping none of this really causes too many problems for John and the design team, but realistically it could... And if any of the construction does cause maze placement issues, an up charge maze would probably be an addition I would rather not see until they have the space to work with.

Probably the most simplistic way to describe it would be Evil Dead by way of Scream... It's about a group of friends who spend a weekend at a cabin in the woods. After one of them reads from a journal, a cannibal zombie redneck family rises from the grave and starts killing them off one by one. The movie is a horror movie, but like Scream, also deconstructs the horror genre and pokes fun at the cliches that are found in the genre. There is a great scene near the end where a "company building" is all out assaulted by ever kind of horror movie villain and monster you can think of. It's outrageous and fun. You really need to see it.

also it gets into Love Craftian Horror with the over all plot.

An upcharge maze would sell out in a day for every time of every night it would be possible to reserve for.

Although that is a problem, I don't think HHN will do it for many other bigger reasons.

And personally, a reason of my own why I wouldn't want it to happen -- yet, is the budget would detract from the other mazes that everyone else sees.

HHN has a lot of thinnning out to do in terms of attendance and nights of operation before we start thinking "interactive upcharge mazes."

I do think simple ideas like "flashlight," "multiple routes" and etc. type mazes could work though.

Even flashlight or multiple routes ideas seems hard to do with the amount of people that go through the maze. :(

Orlando has done two houses that use a flashlight-esque system.

2005's Terror Mines

2006's People Under The Stairs: Under Construction

Basically, every few people someone would be given a lightup miner/construction helmet before entering the house. It was something new that worked, but didnt work at the same time.

Howl-o-Scream at Busch Gardens Tampa this year also attempted a flashlight-esque house. They took their "Unltimate Gamble: Vampire Casino" house from last year, made it "condemned" this year (turned the lights off, no more active casino setting) and basically gave you an actual flashlight as the only light source. Obviously this concept would benefit those that experienced the house last year more than it would first time event goers this year. But its definitely a unique idea of how to handle a returning house.

The last day they didnt bother handing them out at all <_<

After watching these last few episodes of TWD, theres aleady a lot of great maze material. Hey could even make a street themed to Woodbury. The house entrance could be the stais encolosed in chainlink to Building C of the pison and go though assorted cell blocks and the cafeteria, power room etc. Could be eal great for you guys, but i think itd work best in a SS. Idk how the venues are setup over there, but a SS sounds iseal for that type of a house.

Walking dead based on season 3 would be awesome they could take out the tank and place the helicopter crash site :D with the half sliced soldier walker!!!!

And I agree with all the amazing scenes Murdy should place it in a soundstage

we could have the prison as a facade even and call one of our scarezones woodbury!!!!

^ unfortunately, because it's a working studio with heavy production traffic, its pretty damn hard to get use of a soundstage here in Hollywood. It would be taking valuable Movie/tv production space out of commission for at least 2.5-3 months with construction times and tear down times. Orlando really doesn't use their soundstages enough for it to be a problem for them, so they are more readily available.

^actually.. you'd be surprised. Only 2 soundstages are really ever used for HHN. Even during the early years when productions were actively using the soundstages more than they are now, HHN had a SS house. However, what it comes down to is who holds the power card. Right now one of our normal soundstages for HHN is "locked down" by the creative department for "ride" related reasons (transformers or Potter most likely). Trust me, the higher ups at UNI would not hesitate to provide a soundstage to a paying production while giving the middle finger to HHN and saying "oh well".

Well the way I look at it is if HHNH ever plans on actually getting a soundstage for the event then it has never been a better time then now the event has grown sooooo much it's unbelievable

Do I expect them to have a soundstage house next year no because of what you said but do I think it's possible yes it would be really difficult to do but it is certainly possible if they really wanted to

Oh I have no doubt of that. Any way for them to bring in extra money. All I ment was the soundstage use in comparison to Hollywood. The demand and need for soundstage space, whether for theme park related business or film production, is much higher and probably more profitable for Universal in Hollywood than in Orlando. If you were take take two identical sized soundstages, one in Orlando and one in Hollywood, and leased them for the same production, the lease price in Hollywood would be at least be double what they could charge in Orlando because production space in Hollywood (all studios, not just Universal specifically) is in much higher demand.

Something else to consider at Universal Hollywood, is the expansion they just had approved. While I havnt read a lot about the plans and don't know yet where all the additions are being made, I do know a lot of the construction is in the backlot expanding and updating production space. If any of that construction causes any currently standing soundstages to be out of commission for a while, we can most definitely count on not seeing a soundstage maze next year.

My thoughts on an extreme house: It would be awesome if we could get one, but I rather that they fix the quality issue in their houses first. There were waaaay too many blank walls for my liking in the houses. Also, it wouldn't really help the crowd issues very much at all as a VIP house would be very low-capacity.

Since a lot of us would love an icon, I would absolutely love it if Jack the Clown returned of if the Usher returned to HHN. I think that would be amazing.

If Hollywood does do an Icon, and maybe this is just me, I'd like to see them create a new one instead of recyling an icon that's already used... That also might be because I've already experienced a lot of the Orlando icons lol.

from last episode the hallway with the strobe lights would be sick.

I doubt Hollywood will have an icon ever to be honest

What they did this year is as close to an icon or theme as we're gonna get

well an original icon.

Is anyone else tired of how many stilt walkers are used in the mazes? It's understandable when they have Pyramid Heads or one or two in other houses but I feel like they're being overused. The effect of them being intimidating wears off with how many there are. They use up more of the budget too so more scare actors could be used if there were less stilt walkers. <_<

They were never really intimidating to me...mostly because it's hard for them to actually get in your face

I think stilt walkers in mazes at HHNH started with NOES & HOTC in 10. Then in 11 with La Llorona, HOTC, WTMN. Now it's La Llorona, ACGTH, Silent Hill & UMR. Yup, you're right. It's invading the event!!!!

Yep that's when it all started. <_< HOTC was necessary since Tiny is a tall character and NOES remake's original ending was supposed to have a extremely tall Freddy Krueger as well.

But now we have a ridiculous amount of them, and I doubt that'll change. Lol

They were never really intimidating to me...mostly because it's hard for them to actually get in your face

Same here, they never scared me (well except the Alice in WTMN in the school/reptile room. lol)

Hopefully less are used and we see more actors in one room. I feel like that's one thing that was lacking in the mazes (especially TWD this year). Guest should feel overwhelmed by the amount of zombies and the only room that happened in was the barn. The tank scene should have had at more. Most scenes in all our mazes use the same technique with distaction on one side then a strobe scare on the other. Hopefully there's more variety in the coming years, and that will be fixed in the Prison maze we'll most likely be seeing next year. Lol

Well in La Llorona, House Of 1000 Corpses, Silent Hill and Death from ACGTH I think were needed Stilt Walkers but Wrath I dont think realy needed to be nor all the stilts in Alice Cooper last years

I don't think the La Llorona ones are necessary, the HOH were cool but not needed, and yeah Wrath could have been normal height.

I'm surprised we didn't see any stilt walking Walkers or Leatherfaces. Lol JK :D

I agree that they work well when needed. I was fine with the ones in La Llorona and they were some of the best scares in the maze for me. Silent Hill, of course they were needed. The ones in HoH I could have done without. And again, I'm regretting not repeating Alice when I was there! I totally forgot about the stilt walkers, probably because they were resetting when I saw them. I almost feel bad that Alice is the one maze that doesn't come to mind fast, whether for good or bad.

Couple things from twitter

On slender man

@GarciaRoyAndy I'll put it on the survey and see where it lands. I have a feeling its not as well known to a mass audience

On Freddy and Jason

@HHNFan12 If I was to bring them back, would be mainly interested in FVJ

I just thought this was funny haha

@HorrorNights More ScareZones!!!! There can be one in the little area where Mel's is!

@SFMMCrazy They can be themed like car hops...

Hell, if you can do zombie scare face you can do that lol. We need MOAR SCAREZONES!

Forgive me if I'm wrong

But couldn't a scare zone be placed in front of curious george and the terror tram it seems like enough space? I may be wrong though and it may get crowded there not sure

And also how about in front of animal actors and the castle theater their is certainly a lot of space there!
