Oysterhead00
My UMTH Pics. Taken with a cheap Canon SX230IS and these are ALL the pics I took, so some are crappy and out of focus, but just uploaded everything out of laziness of having to go through and pick and choose (got up at 4:45am for the flight home today)....but divided them up by house, that's about all the brain power I had left A lot of the pics are dupes of one with the flash on, and one with it off since I don't know how to mess with the settings so I was just hoping one would end up looking decent. http://s833.photobucket.com/albums/zz256/littledavej/UMTH%202012%20Dead%20End/ http://s833.photobucket.com/albums/zz256/littledavej/UMTH%202012%20Gothic/ http://s833.photobucket.com/albums/zz256/littledavej/UMTH%202012%20Penn%20and%20Teller/ PS - I always really like the 3D houses...and LOVED Penn & Teller, so there are a lot of pics of just walls and stuff to capture the images so I can put the glasses back on and revisit the experience. Feeble Junkie
Those UMTH pictures just got me hyped for Gothic.. As good as the reviews are, I just had a hard time getting excited for it, but after seeing that I am really psyched.. The bottom of the bell tower, where the bell "crashed" to the floor, looks great. It would be cool to hear a really loud sound of the bell crashing, just before you enter the room. I hope the Quasimodo costume looks good.
HHN Explorer
I also have an HD nighttime video from my Canon XA10 coming soon! Looks great at night and everything is visible, so glad I took it down this year

Cody
I believe the gargoyles are GFRC, the same material used for the stone textures in places like Hogwarts and the bunker entrance to Havoc in 2010.
Oysterhead00
I enjoyed your pictures. Thank you for those What do they build those gargoyles out of anyway? The two main tall gargoyles on either side of the church are from the original front gates, they used to be placed on top. They feel REALLY solid and substantial. Some of the other gargoyles though were from the Ghostbusters attraction, and they seemed more like a hollow plaster. Hard to the touch, but sounded hollow while the others sounded SOLID. We were encouraged to touch anything we wanted, so I knocked on a bunch of stuff, and while I don't know what they're made of, that's my interpretation and the details provided by Shawn...an AMAZING guide for UMTH. Cody
Like I said, I'd figure GFRC (glass fiber reinforced concrete). It can indeed be sculpted with precision, as this page details. My stagecraft professor, Eric Craft, participated in the construction of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter and confirmed that GFRC was used to make the interior stonework and stone statues (like the one-eyed crone in the dungeons at the beginning of the Forbidden Journey queue). The actual rock that the castle is built into is stucco, sculpted with the help of jackhammers. Edited October 10, 2012 by Cody

Those gargoyles are very effective - to me they look like genuine gargoyles (i.e., super heavy) but I just can't believe that to be the case. That's the reason I asked in the first place. Cody
GFRC weighs 6 to 14 pounds per square foot. By comparison, concrete is 70 to 80 pounds for a 6 inch precast panel.

Cody
Wow that's incredible . . . . so I could push one of those gargoyles over pretty easily, with my hand? Not at all. That's 14 pounds per square foot, and the gargoyles have plenty of square footage. The GFRC alone would probably weigh as much as a refrigerator, and then you have any necessary support structures. Using GFRC over concrete is the difference between 200 pounds and 2800 pounds.
