Blue Man Media Event Thursday Feb 16th

I was invited by Universal Orlando Resort to the Preview of the New Blue Man Group Show at Universal Orlando this past Thursday and and happy to share my experiance with you all. Now this was my first time seeing the show ever and was truely amazed by everything that I saw. Now some of you, like me, have in the past thought about seeing The Blue Man Show or wanting to go but never getting around to going. Seriously go! There honestly isn't any other type of show that relates to it. Even though I got to see 45 minutes of the new material, I am definetely going to go back and see the full show. As much as I'd love to describe what I saw, it's just one of those things you have to see to understand.
Official Press Release.

UNIVERSAL ORLANDO’S NEWLY-ENHANCED BLUE MAN GROUP SHOW OPENS ON
FEBRUARY 24
Enhanced Show Features New Stage, New Technology, New Music and
New Experiences
ORLANDO, Fla. (Feb. 16, 2012) – Universal Orlando’s Blue Man Group show is taking its unique and
captivating brand of live entertainment to another level – complete with a new show environment, new
music, new technology and new experiences.
Opening to the public on Friday, February 24, the show will take guests on an incredible journey where
they’ll join the Blue Men as they discover, engage and explore the world’s obsession with cutting-edge
technology. New sections include Blue Men interacting with “GiPads” (think Gigantic iPads), a funny and
perceptive look at contemporary modes of communication; and a pulsating new finale featuring an original
Blue Man Group music score that will have guests jumping to their feet.
“The heart of our show is, and always has been, the Blue Man, and his inquisitive, wide-eyed take on the
world,” said Chris Wink, who co-founded Blue Man Group with Phil Stanton and Matt Goldman. “Our
team of artists at Blue Man Productions has created fun, even astounding new visual aspects of the show,
and our music team has given us a great new sound. We are really excited to incorporate these elements
into the show at Universal Orlando Resort “
“This show will take one of Universal Orlando’s most popular experiences to a whole new level,” said
Alice Norsworthy, Executive Vice President of Marketing and Sales for Universal Orlando Resort. “It’s
the perfect complement to the incredible entertainment we offer at our destination.”
Several of the signature moments that have made Blue Man Group one of today’s best-loved theatrical
productions will remain in the show, although in most cases, they have also been updated. And as always,
the production will fuse innovative theatrical spectacle with improvisation and vaudeville-inspired comedy,
art, science and irresistible music performed by the Blue Man Group live band.
“Many of our audience’s favorite pieces, including ‘Paint Drumming’ and ‘Gum Balls/Marshmallows’ will
continue to be a part of the production – and yes, the first few rows will still need to wear ponchos,”
added Phil Stanton, Blue Man Group co-founder. “But we have developed some brand new elements of
the show that provide a larger-than-life, rousing, interactive experience that I hope will really speak to all
cultures and give some of our most devoted fans a new reason to check us out again.”

Special Effect from 2007, Mary Shaw House?

Hi everyone, I hope this is the appropriate section in the forums to post this.

Can anyone please help me remember a special effect that was done in 2007 in a house? I'm almost positive it was in the Curse of Mary Shaw house where you were walking, and all of a sudden you were on a cat walk like structure. Then when you looked down it seemed like you were very high in the air? I was trying to describe how this was done to a friend of mine but my memory sucks anymore.

Any help, clarification would be appreciated! Thanks!

A couple of good Interviews with former HHN Designers

Hey all,

I ran across a couple of very neat interviews on "100% Unofficial Universal Studios Podcast". Specifically, Episode 15 and 16.

Episode 15 has an interview with Ron Schneider (not to be confused with the unfunny comedian). He was very involved with Fright Nights, and talks about how that first year, there were pretty much no rules for the designers. It's a great listen to hear what that year was like.

Episode 16 has an interview with J. Michael Roddy (who now works for Disney). Anyone who has gone to HHN knows who he is. They don't talk about the split with Universal, but he does talk quite a bit about the years he ran it. I think you'll enjoy the other interview a little more. While still professional, he does come across a bit bitter about the split; you get the feeling he won't be attending HHN anytime soon.

The interviews happen toward the end of the podcast.

I couldn't get the podcasts to play from my PC, but they were easily found on iTunes.

Enjoy!

Universal Orlando Resort

Hey fans, we want you to be the first to know… JAWS! and the Amity area will officially close on January 2 to make room for an exciting, NEW, experience we’re planning for you.

We know you love JAWS! and we do too. It has been an amazing attraction and after terrorizing the waters of Amity here at Universal Orlando for 20 years, it’s a VERY important part of our history. So, we’ve got a couple things planned to ensure we always remember and honor it. We know it’s hard to say goodbye, but we can’t express how EXCITED we are about the new, innovative & amazing experience we’re going to be bringing you.

Wizarding World of Harry Potter (Hollywood)

http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/entertainmentnewsbuzz/2011/11/harry-potter-theme-park-coming-to-los-angeles.html
http://www.latimes.com/travel/deals/themeparks/la-trb-harry-potter-wizarding-world-universal-studios-hollywood-12201101,0,7050892.story

With world coming yesterday of a deal being made to bring the popular Universal Orlando Attraction to Hollywood
it made all the HHN fans begin to ponder and attract LOTS of attention
with this being said only a few questions come to mind

1: Where the hell would this be placed? I know that the expansion deal happens late next year and if so could THIS be the expansion they were talking about?
LA times released an article saying they MIGHT tear down some existing cities/rides in order to build the structure, Most Notable and from whats been rumored, T2 or Waterworld

2: Everyones asking HOW this will affect HHN? well the answer is this, anything done within the region of the park MUST be approved by JK.Rowling. with this being said it also might have to be themed to only Harry Potter stuff >.< now IF it takes over T-2 and or French/London Street, we could be losing 2 scarezones and a maze
Now if this was done in the Waterworld Area (which has been rumored to be taken down) it could EASILY be done especially with the given space around the area.

3: When will this open and will HHN still be around? Well when it'll happen, expect it to be in 2014 - 2015, however it could take a long as 2016 to finally be complete
HHN is the #1 Haunt in ALL of California even boosting above Knotts, Dark Harbor, Fright Fest etc; In the next few years BIG changes will take place and when they do, expect bigger and better year after year

4: Will there be more mazes? and if so will HP be open during HHN? Its likely for money revenue to HAVE HP open, however I could see them having it in a more darker tone then just bright lights and magic. As for Mazes we're topped with 6 so far, if it continues we could see a likely amount of 8 mazes within the next 2-3 years, leaving us at an Orlando Level park. Which reminds me. Universal Studios Hollywood now OWNS Universal Orlando. bet you didnt know that did you ;D

there are DOZENS of questions that need to be answered and i'll be happy to answer them to the best of my knowledge

For everyone looking to get one last look at HHN this year, the Orange County history center is having an exhibit called "The Serious Art of Make Believe" from now until april 29th. It features tons of concept art, most of it seen, some of it not. It also has loads of props and costumes from the events, including this year as well as Grinchmas, Mardi Gras and more. There's also going to be a few chances to talk to the creative team, one intimate, the other not so much.

I thought I would start this for Knott's since I've heard something very, VERY interesting over at TPA:

According to the site, the new Knott's general manager does not like what the current Haunt is doing...at all. As a result of this, he wants to dramatically change the event in more ways than one. This includes no longer using the Log Ride (Noooo) and the Calico Mine Ride for "safety reasons" and reducing the number houses to seven or something like that to up the quality. What do you all think of this?

I think this could be all for the better if the maze reduction results in higher quality stuff. I'm sad that they're most-likely not going to use the Log Ride, but it looks like dramatic change is afoot for Haunt's 40th.

Ridiculously spoilery spoils

Ahoy all -
I brought this up at the end of my final event review but the mods merged all my event reviews together into one thread and every one of them alone is tl;dr - the odds that anybody makes it to the end are really small. So I thought I'd post this as a new thread.

So far every year in the past there's been a thread on the forums wherein complete walkthroughs of the houses are given. Room by room, scene by scene, scare by scare. Is there any way we can do that here? I mentioned it in the Bloodengutz section of my review because for some reason as many times as I went through I didn't get to see nearly everything people were talking about.

Plus I learned on these forums that there was a Warcraft II strategy guide in the In-Between house, and that's the cool kinda stuff I really like to know!

So now that the event is over ... What do you all think? Anybody remember the houses well enough to give a room by room walkthrough? Anybody notice any cool Easter eggs? Or just notice something cool you'd like to share?

I'll start by throwing out one of my favorite little details I happened to notice that nobody else I talked to caught: in the collapsing buildings in Acid Assault, they had windows lit up (some of them blinking) and they were timed in sync with the destruction so that they went out when the rubble fell past that point. I thought that was cool:)

I don't have anywhere *near* a good enough memory to give a play by play of any of the houses... So I'm looking at you folks who went through some of them 40 times and such. What'd you see?

Scene of the Year

I've got another fun poll that's a little more thought-provoking than the obligatory House and Street of the Year polls. What was your favorite specific scene of HHN21? All of the houses are fair game. I won't post the actual poll just yet - I want to hear actual nominations (since there are only 20 spots on any poll) before deciding what scenes should be on the official vote.

Here's some criteria you should consider:
-Scariness
-Consistency/Repeatability (was this scene still scary or at least entertaining on repeat trips?)
-Strength of Acting (were the actors in these scenes, both casts, effective in their use of the space?)
-Set Design (did this scene have strong set design in addition to simply being scary?)

I'll post my initial nominations/scenes that are almost guaranteed to be nominated. If you disagree with a nomination, please say so and explain why. Justification should be provided with actual nominations as well.

greek gods and godesses a new era?

ok for the 20th year it started a new era of fear right... fear was a representation of Phobos the greek god of fear. this year it was Fortuna the greek godess of luck..last year in caticombs there was a plaque that stated a clue about this year. this year there was a plaque in winters night that i will post a pic of. the last word on the plaque was Fury capitolized which gives it personality

LYSSA was the goddess or daimona (spirit) of rage, fury, raging madness, frenzy, and, in animals, of the madness of rabies. The Athenians spelt her name Lytta.

Lyssa was a figure of Athenian tragedy. In Aeschylus she appears as the agent of Dionysos sent to drive the Minyades mad; and in Euripides she is sent by Hera to inflict Herakles. Greek vase-paintings of the period also confirm her appearance in plays about Aktaion, the hunter torn apart by his madenned hounds. In this scene she appears a women dressed in a short skirt, and crowned with a dog's-head cap to represent the madness of rabies.

and thats what i found about the greek goddess of fury
get it?

I found this really great artist on deviant art named Steven Sanchez who was doing commissions for 15 buck. So I had him do two versions of EDDIE for me. One based on the HHN I.C.U. artwork of EDDIE and the other based off one of the scareactor's who played him durning HHN 20. I just got the completed pics and couldn't be happier. Check em out.

Here is my in-depth Howl-O-Scream review! I went by myself on Thursday, Oct. 20th to HOS and stayed from park opening (I did the Fright Feast) to just before midnight. I have ranked the houses in the order I enjoyed them and gave everything a rating on a scale of 1 to 10. Let me know if you have any questions!

HOUSES

Deconstruction: The Dr. Is Out of Control - 10/10
I LOVED this house! I went here first after Fright Feast let out as I read that the houses at the front would get the longest lines fast and wanted to it them out of the way. As soon as I walked in alone I knew I was in for a treat. I actually got scared in here. This house probably gets bonus points as I was able to do it twice in a row basically all alone, but I loved everything in here from the scares to the sets to the general atmosphere. The guy in the freezer area got me so good I had no idea where I was going and had to ask him where I had to go to next. Loved it. House Count – 2

Nightshade Toys – 10/10
Another great house (keep in mind this is my first time ever going to HOS so this house is new to me). I really liked the atmosphere in here as well. Again, lots of actual scares! This is a big plus to me, to actually get scared. A lot of the house was trying to figure out where the scare would come from only to have it come from a complete opposite direction from me. Major props to the guy before the tunnels as he got me both times I went through the house. House Count – 2

Vampire Casino – 7/10
Great sets, very good house but used a bit too many mannequins for me liking. It would have been nice if one of them would have been real in the opening rooms but alas both times through the house I realized no real scares towards the beginning. I LOVED the Laundry Room scare (I won’t spoil it) but almost gave me a heart attack as I was not expecting that one at all. The final scares in the buffet room were good as well! House Count – 2

Zombie Mortuary – 4/10
Sadly I really enjoyed the scenery from this house and I alone had the time to make it though one time but it was really ruined by the people in front of me. Sadly this house really really needed some Ops people in it as the teenage girls in front of me literally stopped several times during in the house for several minutes until the scare actors went away (no joke) I’m sure it would have been better if I was able to actually focus on the house and not the other guests but sadly that was not the case. I can’t wait to do it again and hopefully get a better run. House Count – 1

Nevermore – 4/10
Again, twice through the house, twice surrounded by less than stellar behaved people which took away a lot from the house. The sets were great and this compared favorably to the HHN house. I LOVED the “birthing canal” as I’m going to call it, except I kept on wondering how many germs were on that thing by the end of the night. Again hopefully on my next trip I can do a run without others ruining it for me. House Count – 2

Death Row Vengeance – 2/10
Had a good run though here just nothing special to stand out. OK stare scares but nothing too exciting to stand out in my memory. One time was enough. House Count – 1

SHOWS AND PROS AND CONS

Fright Feast/The Midnight Hour – 10/10
DO THIS IF YOU GO TO HOS!!! There is no question in my mind this is worth the value. The food was great! Plenty of selection and everything was hot and fresh both times I went though the line plus yummy deserts. The show was actually entertaining (don’t let the opening number fool you) Granted the Snooki and Palin skits were about a year too late but were very well executed. Much much better than Bill and Ted this year IMO. The thing that makes the Fright Feast so worth it is the time it saves you, you get a great meal, one of the shows out of the way before the park opens, and the early house time. In the hour and half of the front of the line time I was able to hit four of the six houses twice each (probably could have gotten in line for a fifth but was not familiar with the park at all and ended up doing a couple circles as I was lost). I can’t stress again what a great value this is.

Fiends – 10/10
YES YES YES!! Universal needs something like this. It was campy, dirty and fun, what a Halloween dance show should be. Nothing too over the top just a fun time dancing to Halloween songs, great time and I can’t wait to see it again. Which brings me to…

Naughty Nurse Photo Op – 10/10
‘nuff said. Universal take note. Photo Ops DO sell!

Crowds – 0/10
This was crazy busy night for HOS. When I was buying my photos at the end of the night I was asking if it was usually this busy and apparently Tampa didn’t have school the next day as I was told which led to the massive amounts of teenagers in the park. There were a couple of times (mainly after Fiends let out) that I could not move at all and ended up walking around the park in the opposite direction just so I could be moving and not standing still. Which also magnified a lot of ugly guest behavior that seems to be common at Halloween events. Sadly Busch Gardens needed a bit more security in some places to help nab some guests partaking in some obvious illegal behaviors and more Ops in the house to keep lines moving, as I noted before.

OVERALL – 7/10
Would be higher if not for the crazy crowds and unruly behavior I witnessed from some guests (not Busch Gardens fault). I was really only expecting to go one time this year when I went on Thursday, but after the amazing time I had I am planning another trip for this Friday! I can’t wait to go again! I would not miss HOS this year if you can get the time to go!

Freak's Knott's Scary Farm review for 2011

I'm going to do things a tad differently than I normally do. I'm going to post my review of all of the haunted houses and the Hanging first before I post my overall review. I might make this my new review pattern from here on out when I critique any theme park haunts.

After having dinner at BK to get my coupon to save a Whoppering $6 (I'm sorry but I had to go there), I bought my ticket at the north entrance and made my way down to the front. I could've entered at the north gate, but I always feel like I should enter the front gate just because. I was hoping to be there in time for the rope drop, but no dice. Normally I would head to the Ghostrider warehouse mazes first, but I decided to ride GhostRider first since I knew the line for that would be hammered all night. I waited about an hour for that ride but I didn't care. It has been forever since I have been on it and I'm glad I did it.

All right, now to the main show that you all have been waiting for...the haunted houses.

Lockdown: The Asylum: They layout is pretty much the same as it always has been, except they have changed up the ending electric chair scene up a bit. There's also one other thing that I've noticed that they have done to this and a lot of their other houses: they've made it quite a bit darker in than they normally do. I have been complaining that their houses were not dark (Especially this one) enough and they fixed this. Dark, Fog, crazy....solid as it always is, but I fear they will run this to the ground and keep it for another two or three years when I think it should only be around for only one more before it gets old.

Scare: 7/10
Environment: 7/10
Overall: 7/10

Delirium: Right after you exit Lockdown, they have it set up where you pretty much have to go through this. It is somewhat annoying that you have to go through Lockdown just to be able to go through this but no biggie. The facade for the house really set me up for all of the really nice detail and cool effects like the long tongue and plexiglass floor animatronics. The only effect that I missed out on was the inflatable--or deflatable--hallway. I was afraid that would happen as people would complain that it was too claustrophobic or people couldn't get through or something. Again, this maze was very dark and best of all, it had hiding places! I loved the scares in there, especially the giant monster guy in the cult room. Definately a classic for haunt and to be popular for years to come...but hopefully for not too many years. Definitely my favorite house this year.

Scare: 8.5/10
Environment: 10/10
Overall: 9/10

The Doll Factory: Before I review this house, I'm going into a bit of a rant here. I had to wait in a twenty-minute line to get into this house, but that wasn't much of the problem as it moved quickly, the problem was that when I went inside, the conga line was constantly jamming up, making the house experience twice as long as it should have been; this was all caused by people getting too scared to walk through. To make it worse, when the group of girls in front of me got scared, they would jump back and bump into me AND some lady would get scared and bump into the back of me. I cannot tell you how many times I have been sandwhiched inside of this thing. Line management needs to really up their game and follow Universal's ways by letting in a handful of people in and giving each "section" a twenty-second time gap at least. Alright, that's the end of my rant. Now onto this maze.

As most of you know, this is officially the last year the Doll Factory will stay in business. Has it finished off with a bang or a bomb? While I did get a few good startles in there, it just felt like its age was being shown. The talent was descent as they were scaring all of the women in front of me and behind me, but all of the crowding and sandwiching they've done to me had just ruined it for me. For me, I'm sorry to say that it probably finished off with a bomb.

Scare: 3/10
Environment: 5/10
Overall: 4/10

Terror of London: After waiting in a fifteen minute line to buy a boysenberry punch, I decided to hit this house. the line wasn't nearly as bad as the Fail Factory and it moved quickly. The talent was great and even gave a couple of really good scares in there. Even though the ending didn't quite make sense, I still liked it better than the Frankenstein version. Good as it always has been.

Scare: 7.5/10
Environment: 9/10
Overall: 8/10

Dia de los Muertos: One of the two 3D houses at Knott's. I'm seriously over the 3D houses because I just don't notice the colors "pop out" anymore but at least several of the monsters made up for it in there...at least, until the Catina scene. I was wearing my HHN shirt in hopes to get scared more, but the talent in that scene broke character and booed and hissed me out while pointing at my shirt. I even told them, "Thanks for breaking character guys" only to have one of them "sneak" up on me, snarl, and then say, "you're welcome". I don't mind the clowns making fun of me for wearing that, but it doesn't make sense when the creatures of the dead are heckling me for something I'm wearing. Muertos has worn out its welcome and is time to go.

Scare: 3/10
Environment: 6/10
Overall: 4.5/10

Look out for Part Two of this review.

Wonders of Technology show

I went to Haunt on the 1at, and this show was not yet finished that weekend.

I know it's in the Bird Cage theater, so how good could it be? But still, it really intrigued me, as it was supposed to show some haunt props from the past.

Could someone post a detailed review, please? "It sucked" doesn't really tell me much.
Thanks!

Halloween Night

Hey all, been following the forum for years but finally decided to join. for the last 4 years I've been able to go to HHN on a weekend in the center of October, but this time the stars did not align and I was originally not going to attend. HOWEVER I managed to squeeze a business trip on October 31, so I will be attending the last day. My questions is this: is erverything still fully functional on the last day (i.e. they haven't started taking things down), and should I expect it to be crowded since it is on Halloween and only open until midnight? Is it still a good day to go? (I'm going regardless but am just curious what past experiences may have been!) I intend to upgrade to express, as I have done the last 3 years. Thanks!

Favorite New Costume of HHN21

So I ran this poll last year - thought I'd try it again this year. I can only do 20 options for each question, so I had to separate it into zones and houses - and even then I had to make some really tough decisions on what to include on the ballet. Some justifications for the exclusions/nuances:

STREETS
7: I had to combine the male and female costumes for each sin, otherwise they'd take up 14 of the slots. Besides, the costumes are supposed to complement one another. And yes, this includes the daylight and the nighttime transformations.
Raven: If you want to vote for the Raven for houses as well... well, you gotta use the option in the Streets, I guess!

HOUSES
Winter's Night: The zombies were unfortunately out because they've done those types of characters before. The Blue Light Wraiths from the finale were excluded due to their similarity with the Canyon of Dark Souls Wraiths. Hawthorn has a very specific, recognizable costume and thus gets her own spot. The Skeleton Man was excluded due to his similarity with past "blending-in" costumes. "Other spirits" refers to any other of the ghost-based characters found in the house.
Nightingales: Had to lump all stages of the Nightingales into one slot. Gas mask soldiers didn't get included since they've been done in some capacity before; ditto with the regular soldiers.
The THING: I know, I know - the costumes in here are different from the previous THING appearances. However, I was pressed for space, and felt compelled to make this call. If you really loved one of the THING costumes, feel free to write it in via a reply - there were some great ones.
Bloodngutz: Independence Day... people... were excluded due to the genericness of their costume. Peeps guy was excluded because he practically has no costume. Hay Man was excluded for the same reason as Skeleton Man. Arbor Day Girl was excluded since we've seen actresses in that sort of attire before. Pilgrim & Pocahontas were excluded due to the basicness of their costumes.
Saws'n'Steam: Almost all of the costumes here were used in or were heavily drawn from the scare zone last year.
Poe: Again, tough calls had to be made. Vulture Eye from Telltale Heart was excluded due to what many have complained to be the "plasticness" of his mask. The Raven can be voted for in the Streets category. The Pit & the Pendulum characters were fairly generic. Poe's Wife was excluded to her costume being similar to previous corpse-like women at HHN.
In-Between: Unfortunately, the demon characters had to be condensed into a single slot. Most of the masks use the same mold, though I realize there are significant differences amongst the actual costumes. I apologize for this.

"The Thing" BOMBS at the box office

This Friday, The Thing barely made 3 million smackers which will certainly lead it to a less than 10 million box office weekend. Those familiar with box office patterns will notice that most movies will only make half of it's money opening weekend, which could possibly mean that The Thing will make only $20 million in it's domestic run. Foreign sales traditionally don't do much better unless it's a worldwide sensation (Pirates of the Caribbean, 2012).

The film cost $35 million to make, not including marketing which can be up to another $10 million. And who knows how much money they pushed into the maze at both Orlando and Hollywood.

Orlando is used to these failures and is a bigger event anyway and can pull this stuff off without much worry.

For Hollywood though, this was a risky experiment that surely failed and I can't see them doing a tie-in with one of their own films again for awhile, which is unfortunate because this was an exciting time for us fans as this was a first. We probably won't be seeing many more "firsts" like that for awhile. Meanwhile, HHN has only had ONE sold out night so far (which is debatable due to the new way Sundays and Thursdays are done now) and it's about half way through it's run. Could "The Thing" and the lack of any major motion picture mazes be at fault? Was there simply just not enough awareness or interest in either the 1982 film or the recent prequel to bring people into the park like last year or the year before?

Imagine how silly it must feel to know that The Wolfman, which was shoved into the House of Horrors, made quadruple the amount of money and they held off doing a maze for that for 3 whole years. Sadly, The Thing is the main marketing push right now for HHNH.

This is all a shame since the new film is frickin' awesome, as is the maze. And we all know the 82 film is a masterpiece.

HHN's Medicine Policy?

I'm not really sure what the medicine policy for HHN is. I'm on prescriptions and have to carry a pill case with me daily (I take medicine three times a day, morning and night). So I had to take it into the park with me. My regular pill container was empty since I'd finished the medicine for the week before I got into the park.

However I am prone to bad migraines and carry Execedrine Migraine with me at all times in a smaller case.

I was pulled aside and I calmly explained that I suffer from migraines and the pills clearly had "E"s marked on them for excerdrine. I also kept a tums (clearly marked) and an imodium (in a plastic square, also clearly marked).

They even examined my EMPTY case.

They proceeded to tell me my medicine had to be trashed or put in a locker outside.

Where does the park warn you outside that medicine must be thrown away or put in lockers before you go through the metal detectors??? I had to dump everything and Excedrine Migraine isnt cheap. God forbid I get a migraine during the night, all hell would have broken loose.

Help please?? I don't want this happening to me again nor do I want to have to dump all my prescriptions out next time my container is full for the week (EXPENSIVE MEDICINE mind you).

Howl O Scream 2011 Mini TR/Review

I went to Howl O Scream (HOS from now on) on October 6, 2011. HOS takes place at Busch Gardens Tampa. This event is not for the faint at heart, and is much like HHN at Universal Orlando. The theme this year was zombies, always a crowd favorite.

The cast of characters for this years event were myself, my DH, and our best friends. The 4 of us can get into some weird situations, but we always have a great time.

The event was scheduled to start for us at 6p, with the Fright Feast. I recommend this to ANYONE who is thinking of going to HOS. For $25, you get a dinner buffet, a showing of one of the shows, and then exclusive house time for 30min. At 7:30p, when the event goes live for the rest of the public, your FF wristband then becomes Front of the Line pass for 1hr. This made a world of difference for us.

We arrived at the park at about 4:50 or so, parked($13, ouch) and headed to the gate. They were just opening up the side gates for admission, so we headed in. We had some time to kill, so we stopped into the new Cheetah area, as it was new to all of us. Very nice job here. We saw the new cub with his new pooch pal. They both have gotten so big! We watched them for a bit, then got in the 20min posted line for Cheetah Hunt. We waited close to 20min in total for this. For some reason, loading/unloading was not efficient on this ride. Overall, an awesome coaster, a nice addition to the BGT coaster roster.

It was getting closer to 6pm, so we headed into Timbuktu area for the FF. We got right in, got our food, and started eating. Standard fare here, BBQ brisket, Chicken Tenders, Mac and Cheese, Mashed Potatoes, pasta, salad and new this year, a taco bar! We had our fill, and watched the show…

The Midnight Hour : This is HOS version of a Bill and Ted show. They basically take pop icons and songs from the year, and make a parody show. Overall the show was very weak this year. Skip it if you can.

We were let out of the show at 7p on the nose, and headed into the park. Already the zombies were waiting for us. We ran into a roving band of cheerleaders. They seemed to be all over, just waiting to make us one of them! We followed the crowds, and headed to the first house of the night….

The Zombie Mortuary: This was the overall favorite house of the night by everyone in our group. We ended up here 4 times during the night, having a blast all 4 times. This is one of the new houses for this year, and was defiantly a great addition. Some highlights were the room with the crying woman, and the room with the incinerator. We had a lot of fun messing with the scareactor in that room! Also, while in line, keep a lookout for the wandering zombie dragging a disturbing “pet”. This was a 4 star house. Do not miss it!

After getting out of the mortuary, we decided to ride the wild mouse type coaster, renamed the Sand something or other..LOL..I know it as Cheetah Chase..but whatever. Always a fun ride no matter what. We then moved on to the next house…

Death Row Vengeance: This house has seriously run its course. I have done this house now for 3 yrs, and it has not changed at all! Also because it was still early, there were not a lot of scares to be had. We got through this house pretty quick, and all gave it very low scores…a 1 star house…Skip it.

Just before we got into DR:V, we did run into more roaming zombies. We saw a band of doctors, construction workers, and the ever popular sliders! By now, it was 7:30, and the park was open to the public, so we continued on, using our exclusive FoTL time, and headed to…

Deconstruction:The Dr is out of Control: Again, nothing new here…Same old scares, same old house. Even being with people who not seen this house, they also found it not very good. The regular line for this was close to 35min already, though I am glad I did not need to wait. Again low marks 2 Stars…Skip it if you want

We checked the line for Cheetah Hunt, but was already 45min…No way. Sadly we never made it back for a night time ride. We continued on our way, making our way to…

Nightshade Toys: This also was a 2nd run house, though I still enjoyed it. Very creepy in here, though it suffered from a lack of scare actors again. What scares there were though were good. A solid 3 star house. Worth checking out!

We now had 2 houses left, with about 30min left on our 1hr time…We kept moving, passing a few more zombie groups, though not as many. We did find a wolf pack wandering around. They were very fun to watch. We moved toward Gwazi Park to check out….

Ultimate Gamble: Vampire Casino: This was another new house this year…and was also one of my favorites! There is a vampire barker in the front of the house, who has a headset hooked to a speaker, and he was giving attention to all the groups going in. He is also one of the first scareactors I have seen actively touching you (just hands..LOL). He also was very creepy, setting up the house. He told me I had a pretty NECKlace, and he said my O+ was very sweet smelling..LOL. We did this house 2x, and enjoyed it both times. A solid 3 ½ stars. Do not miss it!

I want to say, Busch did a great job staggering the groups in the houses, to try and prevent the ever present conga line that HHN is known for. At times, our 4 were the only people around, making for great scares!

By now, we had about 15min left on our hour time, so we picked up the pace, and headed to the last house of the night for us…

Nevermore: This was the 3rd new house for this year, based on the works of Edgar Allen Poe. I am not familiar with a lot of his works, but knew a few. Overall this was a decent house, some creepy scares to be had. Hopefully this house will be tweaked and make a come back next year. 3 stars, defiantly check it out. We only did this house 1x as it always had a huge line when we looked at it again.

By now, our exclusive time was up, but all of the houses were done. We had the rest of the night to wander, and enjoy ourselves. We rode Sheikra with zero wait, and did a few houses again. Sadly, the zombies tended to be few and far between, or we just kept missing them. We did stop into Club Virus the 18+ club they have set up. We had some adult beverage, and watched the Sliders do a small performance. They are so cool to watch. One did fall during a slide, and looked like he may have been scraped up..hopefully he was alright.

We people watched for a bit, zombie watched for a bit, then headed back to the Zombie Mortuary for a few runs. We ended our night here, leaving the park around 12:30a.

Overall, we had a great time, thanks to the company with us. We would have liked to do Alone, but it was sold out. The crowds were not overly bad, though they got worse the later it got. We never waited more than 10min for a house. We also skipped Fiends this year. Overall a fun event, but needed some tweaking, like more zombies in more places, and more scareactors. Also time to retire some of the older houses.

Hopefully my reviews are helpful to anyone wanting to go to HOS this year.
