It will be interesting to see how they handle the numbering.

My guess is they will start referring to the event by the calendar year for the foreseeable future.

I'm sure they will still have the anniversary house  that has already been built, but will probably call it a "best of" or tribute house.

And that's OK with me.  This year has been a gut punch to the industry, and they can do what they need to.

Gonna play Debbie Downer again, but I'd say there's a 30% chance this time next year looks like it does now - with mass gatherings still verboten.

The world seems to be entering a second wave, and the US has lagged the world by a month or two.

We might not have a real HHN again until 2022.

I think by next summer we're going to pretty much have to start moving back to normal. Maybe not completely but closer than now. Put it this way if your wonderful governor forces the parks to still be closed by this time next year it might very well be curtains for CA's parks.

EDIT: I should add that it is even more absurd that he refuses to trust the FDA approval of a vaccine, which is naturally going to take even LONGER for the parks to reopen. Unreal.

Looking at Spanish Flu, 1919 was seemingly far less severe than 1918. And the second (worldwide) wave seems to be less deadly here, while with Spanish Flu the second wave (which peaked in October) was vastly deadlier than the first. So hope I guess?

Generally, IPs are agreed upon for one year. Agreeing to more up front is an exception to the rule.

If Universal wants to reuse the IPs from this year again next year, the IP holders would have to agree to it.

Which is why I think the originals and Brides are the surest things to be kept, since they have to negotiate for the others.  Of the four licensed ones, Billie will likely be their top priority.

So, in Novermber of 2007, Mike Aiello wrote a backstory for an icon that sadly never made it to HHN 18. This character was Nathaniel Crowe. A pumpkin salesman who was transformed into basically the enjoyment of Halloween. You can find Mike reading his backstory in this video. But it was made to connect the 2007 event to 2008's event. Along with all the houses. IMO it was better than Bloody Mary (Not that she was bad or anything just that Crowe sounded much, much cooler) but sadly he was not used, and Mary was chosen instead...only to not be used in the event outside of the website and one maze. So if he was to make a comeback in some form, maybe as apart of a house or even 31's icon (Since Fear is most likely going to be used for 30.) would you guys be open to it?

I adore Mary, so gotta disagree with you there. But yes, I would love for Crowe to be an icon for 30 instead of Jack, especially since we might still have Beetlejuice (not as likely to be kept as Brides and Billie, but likelier than HoHH and TC3D in my best guess)--those two are just much too similar for my tastes.

I'm amazed that people actually continued to think this event was going to happen.  Perhaps it was unrealistic hopeful thinking?

We have witnessed situations in the world that have never been seen in most of our lifetimes, if ever, before.  The Walt Disney Company with all of their parks closed worldwide for months at a time.  Entire seasons of sports being cancelled.  Mega-cities literally devoid of anyone on the streets and in public week after week after week.  Tens of thousands dead each month and hundreds of thousands infected.  Economies in shambles.

And some thought a company was going to cram pack a Halloween event with night after night of crowds?

I was not excited at all at the thought of how toned back the event would have been.

I think if HHN ever goes completely original houses a lot of not local guest would not come. People travel to experience the shining, stranger things, hill house. If they wanted original haunts they could just look at local haunts around them

For the next few years, possibly the next half-decade, they’re going to be relying on locals.

I can't see them cutting back on house count without them lowering the price. It would just rub people the wrong way if the house count has been 10 for a few years now and then all of a sudden it drops down to 8 without a cheaper ticket cost.

If anything, I see the number of IP's dropping significantly. Maybe 2 or 3 the next few years and they would be Universal owned properties so they can avoid higher costs. I don't see IP's in the street at all. I don't see the rumored Bill and Ted show returning anytime soon either. That show requires a lot more planning and production costs on Universals end. AoV is paid a "flat rate" to create the show and given a budget for set costs. Universal doesn't have to pay their own creative costs on it like they do with other shows.

I do think it would be cool to bring back some OLD fan favorite original houses as well to save on cost. They have already been designed and many props are saved so the cost would be small.

I will say, if the event does happen this year, I can easily see this year being a "dry" year in terms of alcohol or VERY limited (like your given two drink tickets to use all night long). Masks will be required and having everybody walking around drinking and getting drunk will just make the mask wearing issue way to hard to enforce.  It will definitely cut into their profits but safety is way more important.

I think they might need to lower the price, hence the lower house count.

So I was thinking the other day would fans truly care if they reused IPs as long as they kept new and mostly originals each year? Like let’s say universal wanted to do cabin in the woods again? It’s been almost 10 years would people really complain about seeing it again? Or a classic like the exorcist or poltergeist. It will always be a classic and I feel like people would love to see some of these houses again

I feel like there's a couple of IPs that could've been executed way better, so I could be open to it. I do think (could be wrong) that the house count will be cut 1-2, which I would be okay with as long as it didn't come at the expense of originals. I could see a 3/5 or 4/5 in favor of originals for the following few years.

They cutting everything this year.  They don't want to risk something even if on paper and numbers show that it's sold out in past and sold well enough to bring it back this year.
They are predicting that people won't have money for merch?
I mean they announced a tent super discounted merch for next week for team members and annual passholders.
I want to see the merch like for this upcoming year.
I don't think that it means that we won't see that art again?  I mean who know they might bring her back in the future.

Merch is risky, I mean look at the HHN 25 prints ? Those were heavily discounted towards the end of the run and at the tent sale.
I believe they were thinking that those prints were going to be golden.

Well, I’m betting they’re glad they used three merch powerhouses (ST, UCM and GB) last year.

(And I wanted them to save UCM for this year lol)

I just hope that HHN 30 decides to resurrect Scary Tales in one way or another since that's my favorite Universal franchise that the creators of the event has ever done in my honest opinion. If they don't have room, that's fine, but I still want to at least see a dark fantasy-themed attraction added to the Horror Nights lineup this year.

Tooth Fairy, your party is ready.

I feel like they missed such a huge opportunity with Deadly Ever After. Snow Queen should've been the main villain IMO. Bonus points for a guy impaled on an ice pick, bonus bonus points for him to be wearing a viking helmet. ;)

Late announcements are what they used to do. We would all sit on this website speculating until the big midnight website reveal. A rumor would pop up saying it would be a certain day at midnight and we would all jump in the "chat" and speculate until the actual release. Having one big announcement in July or August is the best way to do it.

Aren't you more excited not knowing what houses we will see? It builds the anticipation.

Legacy saying that they're going to be relying on the event to carry the resort. I'll say it once again, I think Critical Analysis found himself a monkey's paw late last year.

    Is Terra Cruentes still happening?

Ringwraith says there’s a couple things on that list that are wrong and that fans would be very happy with the things that were.

(He now says that it’s a 5/5 split counting Brides as an IP.)

TCM is a good way to respond to the family friendly complaints, since unlike HoTC it’s big enough a property to put on marketing.

Pump the brakes y'all. Like @Legacy said, the event is still happening (as of now) and there is no June 19th plan to announce that it's not. Builds are happening and scarezones are also a go. This year has IMMENSE potential and it will feel like an indie-horror film vibe with originals and tremendous nods to the past. There won't be colossal looming IP's that they're clearly trying to capitalize on like TWD, Purge, etc. This year has a very "homemade" vibe to it(at least the houses).

It's a 5/5 split. 6/4 if you consider UCM Bride original

Gonna take a guess at the IPs:

    -Beetlejuice

    -Brides (w/ Billie)

    -Haunting of Hill House

    -TCM

    -Invisible Man

    Well this sucks.

I just got an Orlando survey.

UO: Which type of OUAP do you have?  Me: Seasonal

UO: In what year were you born?  Me: 1967

UO: Thanks for your time, Boomer!

I wonder which answer disqualified me...

    <full disclosure: they didn't actually say "Boomer">

    Well, technically you're not a Boomer. ;)

Just Finally hearing from sources in the park that HHN 30 will indeed not be happening this year. Apparently There’s an event expected to happen called “Universals Fall Festival”. Bringing characters and everyday faces from the parks such as costume characters to attraction workers in Halloween attire passing out candy with a “Halloween vibe to the park”. Will be taking place during the day/early evening From September 18- October 31st and be welcoming to guests of all ages. HHN Is set to return in 2021. Announcement supposed to come June 19, and the headline “Scare ya later!” Don’t know exactly how true this is, and again only hearing it from multiple people inside the parks. Hope it’s not true, but seems legit and like a planned out idea from universal. Still hoping for a HHN 30, but after hearing this multiple times the past couple days, doesn’t seem likely anymore. What do you guys think of this? Smart? Or completely whack? Guess time will tell in coming weeks. Fingers crossed.

If true might be for the best. But hopefully the "Fall Festival" isn't such a success that they basically decide to make the event much more like it when it returns.

Ironically, Fright Nights seemed very much like this. Like, I think if Fright Nights were to happen in the modern era as it was it would get sooooo many family friendly complaints.

Here is exactly how I see the event going this year:

    1. Yes the event will happen and yes it will be the 30th Anniversary. Will changes need to be made? Of course. But we can’t exactly tell how much of an extent the changes will have on the event until the parks reopen.

    2. Social Distancing- I totally think that the capacity for the event will be at 75% of the normal amount. With that, I think there will be restrictions on passes and access to the event. Such as frequent fear and stuff. Also, many might not know but team members usually have full access to the event, last year team members were blocked out for 2 weeks at the end of October To help with capacity count. I can see universal restricting team member access from the event in it’s entirety. Maybe having like 3 hhn passes for team members To use during the event. Instead of full access. Plus preview night.
    3. islands of adventure will be open- I think half of islands will be open to guests attending the event to help with social distancing. With this I think toon lagoon and Jurassic park will be closed off. also limited attractions operating over there such as Spider-Man, Forbidden Journey and maybe Hulk. I don’t believe we will see any frights in that park expect maybe a chainsaw group by port of entry. Connection of the parks similar to grinchmas.
    4. The Theme- I think we will be seeing a heavy original content year. IP houses being erased from this years event to save some money and save for more of the general public that mainly come to the event for them anyways. Which is fitting for an anniversary year. I think the focus will be the icons and the story Line will have to do with Carey Ohio celebrating the past haunts. I do believe that this years commercial and media have already been filmed with original/icon content. As some of the icons have been seen by the sound stages earlier this year in production.
    5. Shows and Houses- it’s hard to tell how they would put on a show at fear factor this year unless they mark the bleachers for spacing. If the Bill and Ted reunion tour was true as it was circulating backstage and amongst TM, I am curious to see if they’d save it or use it this year. Houses I think will be a stop and go type of thing. Meaning each individual or party goes in with a 10 second gap until the next group enters. Definitely making the lines longer but possibly getting rid of express passes for this years event to help with the waits. RIP tours still available.

30 will happen and it will be great. In the fall everyone will be there with a nice cold beer in their hands and appreciating the event being open. It’s a huge money maker for universal and they can’t wait to put the event on as much as we can’t wait to go. Yes it may be different, but different may be good! We may be getting an old horror nights vibe again. While celebrating the past and icons and stories we all love and know. This could be the year for the fans. Just my opinion and some speculation. Sorry for the length.

    Once again...

    "Don't do that.

    Don't give me hope."

(Both for the event being able to happen at this level of operational normalcy, and for the content to be fanservice heavy.)

It’s entirely about a domestic abuser attempting to gaslight his romantic partner.

Do you think this means it won’t happen? I had been holding out hope for five originals whenever the event happens next.

I could see them doing a more abstract approach as a way around the subject matter.

I'm sure hhn will be going on. After all, the event itself has proven itself to be a huuuuge money maker that keeps growing year after year. Especially after what, a month or more of closing the parks? They're going to after some serious moolah.

The people that will attend despite the virus will be greater than those that don't because of it.

In any case, does anyone feel like Universal doesn't take risks with their horror content anymore? I remember one year we practically had Nazi zombies.

This is a major reason why I don't want any more houses. Because it feels like more and more things are becoming "problematic." The more houses they have to make, the more topics they have to cover, which works directly in opposition with fewer topics that won't offend someone.

That said, Invisible Man has been considered by some as too offensive and that's being floated as a possibility now. I think people aren't giving it enough credit for potential as a house, depending on how creative they're allowed to get with it (it IS a Universal property after all)--imagine an entire house that relies on sensory effects, similar to the Graveyard Games tunnel. Can we agree that that would at least be something new and unique?

Youre probably right... but when I drop $2500-3000 going there the thought of it being a pain in the ass frightens me. Who knows. Maybe it will add to it and HHN30 will be the one everyone talks about for years to come.

If we have to have those measures, the event won't happen period. See ya in '21.

  19. I liked 29 a lot better than 28. Yeah some of the IPs were *really* bad, but the originals more than made up for it. Better the IPs be the duds and the originals be the stars than the other way around.

If the event happens, I see the changes being more logistic in nature than content-wise. But right now to spare myself the pain I'm the event doesn't happen and comes roaring back with a GOAT-contender of a year in 2021.

House lineup hasn’t changed because of the pandemic. The changes on the spec map are due to changes with rumors. Signs point to a situation where Universal attempted to get another IP and could agree on terms.

You said that they were still trying to negotiate Sabrina. What about Gremlins?

I'm at the point where I'm assuming this year won't happen, sadly. Trying to look ahead to next year at this point, though I expect much of what was planned this year to appear if so.

You could've also made a great reasoning for them to do a house in 2018 when it came out, but there's a big reason why they did Halloween 4 than 2018. An it's the same reason why there's pretty much none to the slimmest of chances it's the secret IP this year...

Disney is part owner of Halloween 2018. So it's an IP that's out of reach.

H5 is a possibility. Not the most exciting, but Mike Myers is a pretty sure bet in bring people in.
