  1. Halloween sorta had one, I guess

G&G kinda did too. I can't remember if any others did

Yes Halloween did a great job...except express couldn't really see it. I stood in front of the house twice for the full 9 minute cycle to catch the sequence. Towards the end, Universal's ops goons starting directing us toward the house.

I would not count Giggle's images as a pre show. It's just pictures of clowns with the house logo. Zero contribution to the context of the story.

Honestly, videos are not hard to make now-days and they already have the costumes. The only true cost is TVs/Projection screens, which a major media conglomerate should have no trouble obtaining.

  2. Yes I am referring to Cedar Fair's concept. At their haunts, there is an express style pass called the skeleton key. In addition to skipping the line, there is an extra pre-show room where characters give you the back story to the maze.

I'm considering going to King's Dominion this month. I'll def be buying the skeleton key pass and will report back.

yeah videos in the queues and videos playing in the lagoon would be nice, but it's just more money they have to spend, and it wouldn't really add much to the event since the only thing that people care about are the houses.

If they really cared about the houses, they'd care about knowing the back story.

  3. This is an important detail that a lot of people tend to forget. What someone's first experience was with HHN will forever effect the way HHN "should" be to them. For example:

The first HHN house I ever went through was Screamhouse, a record-breaking house that still holds one of the highest approval ratings ever recorded for Universal, let alone HHN (94%). Very very few houses will ever be able to compare with the atmosphere and detail they put in to Screamhouse. But, telling people about Screamhouse (or Hellgate, or Ghost Town, or the original Psycho Scareapy) will never convince the people who never experienced them that those houses are better than Gothic or American Werewolf in London. I would love to see how many people have the first house they ever went through is in people's top five. Unless their first house was a notorious bomb (Cold Blind Terror, Fear Factor, and The Spawning come to mind), I expect it would be a trend.

And that's why we will continue seeing IPs. The IPs will bring in a wider market, but that wider market is coming because of IPs. If Universal stops using IPs, those people stop coming. It's why 2008 (Bloody Mary) saw a massive drop in attendance (if I remember correctly like 10-15%) from the year prior and the year after (Carnival of Carnage and Ripped from the Silver Screen).

Funny, my first HHN house was Gothic. The time I ever heard of the event was Islands of Fear and the first back story I ever read for a HHN house was Screamhouse.

  4. Interesting read for those who haven't been going to the event since the beginning...

Highly disagree with the author stating Roanoke and Giggles are the stand out original houses, and Walking Dead and AvP are some of the best houses in HHN history. AvP is up there for me, but definitely not TWD. If I wrote this, I would have said Dollhouse is the standout original house with Halloween and AvP being some of the best IP houses ever.

Also worth noting there's not a single mention of AWIL among the IP discussion, nor Gothic or Dead End for present era original content.

  5. I'm a fan of the show and think it's alright. What I don't like about it is more on the creative design side rather than the IP side. A lot of the practical effects are not up to par. The house also has a weak beginning and ending. The only thing that saves this house from being the worst are the large environments and amount of scare actors.

BTW, does anyone else find it strange the adverts for HHN 24 show burning walkers, yet there are none.

  6. I felt like this year was the goriest of the three I have attended. There's no correlation between gore and demographics. I do think there is one between sexual content and demographics, which hinders the adult atmosphere. Although I could argue the barker at FDTD and B&T clearly cross that line.

Just for the sake of debate: what makes the consumption of alcohol different for HHN than it does at a NFL game? I believe it's about the same, and kids are just as likely to attend an NFL game. I enjoyed drinking at the event this year, but was put off by Universals uber stict policies and slack ass bar tenders. Also, I'm not an annoying drunk and remain a decent human being. I would never act obnoxious or disrespectful towards employees or patrons. The only way you can tell I'm intoxicated is when I snore while sleeping. Guess I wish everyone had the same tolerance I do.

  7. Real shame they built the amazing voodoo shack only to leave it empty. I agree the voodoo queen should be up there barking all night. She was the best actor of the event. Loved how she wandered through the crowd improvising.

  8. Yea, I was being a bit sarcastic when I said it. But the more I thought about it, the more sense it made. I know it will never happen, but it could be a win-win. 8 original houses at Universal for the 25th anniversary and TWD Land at IoA.

Universal has the money, but they would never approve a budget that large. Plus, I think USF is better suited aesthetically for TWD than IOA.

  9. All it would take to fill TWD void would be Harry Potter. Turn London into a scarezone with Death Eaters all over the place and the masses will flock.

Simpsons Tree House of Horror would be a decent draw.

Granted, these two aren't typical horror franchises, just popular IPs with elements of horror tied in.

The Shining would be my most wanted IP now that AWIL, Halloween and Alien are out of the way.

Honestly, and it's sad this will never happen, I want the 25th anniversary to be a "best of" year. Bring back 8 or 9 of the best original houses HHN has ever done, 4 or 5 of the best scare zones and have the event hosted by the icons.
