To be fair to them, Pennywise IS a killer clown from outer space.

HEY KID! DO YOU LIKE SEEING THE SAME THING EVERY YEAR? DOES WASTING TIME THAT COULD BE SPEND IN SCAREZONES OR HOUSES APPEAL TO YOU? THEN OH BOY DO WE HAVE A SHOW FOR YOU! Skip this crap. It brings nothing new and each year I see it the more my desire for the return of an excellent halloween adventure grows.

ROCK AND ROLL, SHOCK YOUR SOUL Set 2 Evil does not go down without a fight. We may have saved our music once, but the evil has returned to try again. And you may have survived its last onslaught, but this time, things are quite different.... yay music. Though I may have brought the majority of the best stuff out first. ROOMS: Facade: The entrance is set up like a giant record player, turned on its side, with a spinning tunnel as the entrance. The spinning tunnel looks like the record, with grooves and scratches. As guests reach the end of the tunnel and turn, a ghoulish hair metal musician attacks. (Rooms can be in any order, as per the last time.) House of the Rising Sun (The Animals): Guests enter The House of the Rising Sun, a squalid house of ill repute. Many of the men are passed out, and an organist plays the organ, occasionally swiping at guests. In the transition, the boss of the house bursts through the hall, telling guests to get out. Psycho Killer (Talking Heads): Guests walk into a warped representation of an apartment living room. The TV is on, playing various kills from slasher movies, someone's torn through the place, the windows are horribly cracked, and the kitchen is on fire. A madman will break through the busted window, brandishing a knife, and another hides in the kitchen, brandishing an axe. No More Mr. Nice Guy (Alice Cooper): Guests find themselves in a red-lit performer's vanity room, where Alice Cooper is huddled in the corner. The mirrors are busted, and one lights up to reveal a "mirror" Cooper (Alice Cooper, but flipped). When the light goes off, a scaracter Mirror Cooper will break through the other mirror. The transition has guests walk past Alice Cooper's dressing room, where an actor playing the man himself will kick down the door. Mr. Roboto (Styxx): Guests enter a futuristic dystopian prison, where various rock musicians are locked in cells, and beg for release. Two Mr. Robotos lurk within the halls, intimidating guests. In the transition, guests see Kilroy being forcefully turned into a Mr. Roboto. Video Killed The Radio Star (The Buggles): Guests find a crime scene in an electronics store, where a man has been bludgeoned to death, and all the TVs are set to music videos. A man with an old TV as a helmet (with the screen on, permanently static) appears, ready to bludgeon guests with either a VCR or an electric guitar. Happiest Days of Our Lives/Another Brick in the Wall Part 2 (Pink Floyd): Guests walk down a set of school desks, occupied by ghoulish children (some will lunge at guests), as they make their way to the teacher's desk. The teacher, taken directly from the movie, rants at guests and threatens them with his ruler. In the transition, a giant teacher puppet attacks. Don't Pay The Ferryman (Chris De Burgh): The rain comes down, and guests find themselves walking beside a river. They see a soul of a man bargaining with Charon, who is having none of it. While this scene distracts guests, a shade attacks. In the transition, Charon emerges, threatening guests with an oar. Maxwell's Silver Hammer (The Beatles): Guests wander through the trail of Maxwell's carnage, where some of the victims reanimate and cry for help. In the transition, Maxwell brings his silver hammer down, aiming for a guest's head. The Final Countdown (Europe): Guests find themselves in a secret Soviet bunker, where a doomsday device counts down to annihilation. Armed soviets will attack.

Houses: WILD Scarezones: MILD

I mean, I just read Ringwraith’s critique and they loved it a lot, but I just.......hoo boy. Loved the zone, found the house just full of constant patterns and bright colors with no more subtle scenery breaking it up start to finish. The triggers were all extremely loud and almost all just bizarro funhouse boings and such, all overlaid on top of each other. Very loud, very bright, very fast, no time to breathe. We were part of the first six or so people going in after a cast change, so maybe the scareactors were a little trigger-happy, but...oof. edit: not to mention the fact that nothing was scary...even what I expected to see and love, the cotton candy cocoons, went unnoticed because of all of the other distractors and the overall rushed feeling of that house.

CORPSES: VERY very long; thought it had to have been over about 2/3 through. Wow! Fishboy was an impressively-sculpted figure but wasn’t lit up, so it didn’t pay off. Lots of Otis. Spaulding is very sparse with his scares; actually told my boyfriend “oh, I guess there is a hole tonight” until he pointed him out, but he looked very close to the film Spaulding based on what I could see! Dr. Satan is SO impressive, and actually got me as a scare even though he was completely in the open and visible, even behind a table and therefore away from me, for the whole time. I looked at him and gasped and whispered “Doctor Satan..!” to my boyfriend, but the Doctor himself was making eye contact with me and held out his gross syringe fingers in my face. Felt the squishy floors of a wet house before I felt the water, so for now, don’t worry about getting too wet. GREAT HOUSE if you’ve seen it at least!! YOU GUYS ARE GOING TO LOVE DEPTHS OF FEAR. HOLY SHIT.

They seem to have actually been creative this year. I hear projection mapping (pixelated green blocks, very '80s) and bright red projected lines on the sidewalks. I agree with a lot of what you're saying, but draw my own line at softening the event due to the outside world. Horror is escape. Horror is also frightening. While I know this isn't Blackout level scare, I don't need HHN to turn into just another money pit that only cares about getting a 15 year old Instagrammer through the gate. As long as a balance remains, I'll be happy to keep going. And I'm sure they'll continue being happy with the money I spend

They risk it because it's an adult event for adults. If snowflakes can't handle that, they should stay home.

I really hope that HHN doesn't mirror current societal trends of toning it down because everyone is offended by everything. If I could tell Aiello one thing for this year, I'd say GO WAY OVER THE TOP.

In honor of HHN fast approaching, I stopped by my college town's theme park to get the whole Zombieland experience. Almost all of the movie was filmed in Georgia, and "Pacific Playland" exists in Valdosta, GA. It's literally five miles from my apartment but it's lowkey overpriced so I don't go often, but it was so so so fun!! Pictured are the main entrance, the shop where Tallahassee finally found his box of Twinkies, and Wichita and Little Rock's drop tower. In the movie it's the "Blast Off," but at the time it was known as the Firecracker. It's since been re-themed to be the "Blazer Blast Off," representing our university and possibly paying homage to ZL. Fun fact: while talking to my supervisor at work about this, he shared that many of the zombie extras in the park were university students. Their makeup was applied in our Fine Arts complex and they hung around campus for a bit before their time to go on set started. It was apparently a sight!!

Well I’m back at guest services.. again. The first time they were able to print new tickets for us. However, when we got to the next house, it said they weren’t activated. Oy..
