  1. I wonder how wide the thresholds really are for recycled and original content respectively this year. With a S&S house heavily hinted at and most people unhappy about another movie house, let alone one that's being considered a rehash, I'm seriously doubting that we'll get to see some of last year's favorites as experimental franchises: Catacombs and Dogs of War. If S&S went from a street concept to a house, then does anyone think that one of these could do the reverse? So little is know about the streets at this time, and while I do think it'll push our tolerance levels you just never can tell with Universal.

  2. I posted this in website updates, but feel it has some relevance here as well. The Howl-O-Scream website has updated. They are going with the predicted Zombie theme. Does this mean Uni will stray from using zombies this year? i am not sure how much Uni and BG know about each others events before they are shown to the public; they are said to have worked together rather than competitively. This is just food for thought, and maybe we can deduct some reasoning out of HHN via HoS ideas... but I am not completely sure. Take this for what it is at least-> HoS is now updating, so Uni should start updating more frequently to keep up with HoS.

Current employees of NBC Universal are Universal Orlando Resort (including Wet n' Wild), Universal Studios Hollywood, and Universal Studio Japan. SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment is currently owned by the Blackstone Group, who has unrelated joint ownership ventures with NBC Universal and others. While individually functioning entities, HOS and HHN aren't enemies or necessarily in direct competition. It's closer to a healthy sibling rivalry than it is cut-throat commercialism.

I agree. I can see if we do get to have a Thing house (which I am all for) I can't see it in the Jaws house. I can picture it in the soundstages or something like that. I just cant see them putting something like that over there. However, that Horizon Extraction Company does sound like something that would be in the Thing house.....but I still have to wonder :/ if not the thing house in Jaws, than what?

Check out the Our Mutual Friend thread.

  3. Universal's Halloween Horror Nights - Orlando (OFFICIAL)

"In 2011 at Halloween Horror Nights 21 you will confront the paranoia and fear that comes from being trapped inside an Antarctic Thule station... A shape-shifting alien is on the loose… but where? It could be anywhere, or anything… Suddenly, you realize, you’re face-to-face with…

    2011: The Thing"

Well, that takes care of that. It's FaceBook official. : P

  4. How can you possibly have the "right vibe" of being in Antarctica when you're sweating to death in the JAWS house? That's my point - if there is to be a house based in Antarctica, it needs to at least be in air conditioning. Not saying I need to have to wear a parka to enter - a little cold blast upon entering a Soundstage would do.

You've misunderstood; reread my post for clarification, particularly the last sentence, and I think you'll find that I have the same opinion as you. Also, I know it's hard to read through everything, but I did post the following four pages back...

This is my most unfounded speculation, so members with greater knowledge feel free to step in and elaborate.

SS22 for The Thing Prequel is absolutely believable to me. It's the most logical. Not to be that person, but I was a cast member of Dead Exposure in 2008, and I can testify. Those tents FEEL like there's no AC. Even on the rare cold night, I'd swear it was closer to 85° in the actual maze despite it being around 50-60° outside. I don't know how they compensated for that in 2007, but with this one being a theatrical promotion, and the fact that a lot of fans loved the original house, SS22 is a much more naturally affective area. More potential, more room, more control, more variables already aligned and out of the way.

So that leaves us with the deductions that SS23A&B could possible be the WWI related house and the hospital of sorts. Does anyone think the two could be related thematically, such as the firefight and the aftermath? As I recall, not many thoughts were revealed on the spec thread regarding the WWI house, so forgive me if I've separated what was supposed to be a singular concept (the hospital is the WWI house).

Side note... I swear we were told by our ASM and SM at the time that the tents weren't air conditioned...

  5. Does anybody think this is REALLY a hindrance? PS Home for the Holidays (or whatever) wasn't exactly freezing cold and Hades wasn't a thousand degrees like it should be at the center of the earth.

While it being cold would be cool, I think it adds very little to the house itself. Would much rather they spend all that $$$$ on props and costumes for the house, and leave the temps as they are.

I've come to agree that it does add very little. I don't need to be absolutely freezing cold in order to believe that we're supposed to be in Antarctica. I just need the right vibe. Hopefully they'll continue to be logical though. Like, it made sense to put Orfanage in the hottest maze location, much like it makes sense to place what's been rumored for that queue there this year, and I'm not talking about The Thing Prequel.

  6. As for Leave It To Cleaver, I feel like we wont be seeing that house in a long time, if ever. It's kind of a one trick pony. Seeing it on the streets in Sting Ally would be great though.

I agree that Sting Ally would eventually make a great spot for Leave it to Cleaver to return. With all the little, quaint store fronts, you could really take the dark humor of that house and turn the scare zone into a whole interactive street full of merchants and commerce.

"With a steady livestock of transients and town lawbreakers with which to serve, and a staff of volunteers who will preserve their town's deadly secret by any means necessary, there is truly no end in sight for Samuel or his family business."

Also, we did have The Caretaker as well. Carey, OH, is riddled with wolves in sheeps' clothing, so to speak. Can't imagine that some of them aren't in on all the secret keeping together.

Most importantly for me, I love that kind of acknowledgement of the "1950's American Dream" as being an aspiration never fully realized. Very American Beauty esque or Kubrick-ian in nature. This way of living that never really even existed to begin with. That's what made me love Cleaver, and separately I think why the concept of nuclear fallout is synonymous with that time period, why it fascinates so many people... Would the general public dig it? No, probably not. Would most of the fans? I'd like to think so, but, no, probably not. Would I? Selfishly, of course the answer is yes. : P

"Psychoscareapy" was not a icon house. They forced Jack into the mix in 2006. Regardless, we have been told all these franchises are done. I'm not sure what you mean by resurrection.

I am befuddled by the want for a sequel house at all. To me a sequel is a cop-out in a way. We were promised a New Era and I was completely thrilled to hear that the old was dying and we could expect fresh new ideas... but every year, regardless of what has been said, people want to dredge up old ideas. True I have my fond memories and favorites from all the events past but I don't want to see a rehash ever except for possibly a "best of" type deal... But even so, didn't everyone get there fill of that last year? We had a house dedicated to the past.

I don't know if it is just a lack of creativity or a fear of change but it seems few people stray out of the realm of what we know already when speculating. Heck it seems like Hollywood has lost all creativity as well with all these crappy rehashes. Now a CONCEPT is far different than a Sequel. There is, after all, only so many situation one can be put in. Using a similar Concept to tell a different story is fantastic but simply saying "I want Catacombs 2" is just weak. for example Psychoscareapy was not the first house we had that delt with an insane asylum.

I know we will always have the returning franchises... it is inevitable and really so long as they tell a different story (or a GOOD continuation) I'm fine with that. But I don't want to see something (such as Catacombs or Havoc) come back simply because people liked it and I certainly don't want to see a sequel already out of the jump gate of the "New Era".

As for Movie houses... I think they are a core part of the event and I expect that they will stay current for the most part. I think The Thing could easily be back so long as the movie is decent and it is different enough from the original that it doesn't feel rehashed.

I agree with all of what you said, Fearman. I think we deserve as fresh of a new start as possible. I, like you and others, am putting my trust in A&D at the same time though, which can be difficult, don't get me wrong.

  7. Disaster is not a cabin. In fact, if the facade is being interpreted correctly, it's quite possible that it won't even take place in a single building.

You've grabbed my attention again, mostly because I feel like I've missed something else despite checking the threads for HHNXXI regularly. Automatically, I thought of the Zombie Gras/Zombiegedon relationship we had last year for that location, but it's confirmed that there will be no scare zone there this year. So, possibly multiple buildings for this codenamed fairy tale/presidential house? The facade appears longer then it has been in the past, I'll trust the community's word on that one, but I don't know enough about the disaster queue to understand this development. Is there more information? Not trying to push, so forgive me if this theory is intended for small doses at a time.

Here's pictures of the Scare Actor shirt that I bought during the 4th of July sale. Awesome product, great quality! Sorry this took me so long to post. I've been having problems with my IMGUR account lately.

  9. From the HHN 17 guide:

A secret facility in Florida studying the Bio-hazardous remains of Artic outpost 31 accidentally unleashes some-THING.

The Thing: Assimilation was never supposed to be in the Antarctic. The remains of the two men were transferred to Florida.

In the case of a prequel, I think moving it to the SS with buttkicking AC is necessary.

    Ah, thank you , Mae! : )

  10. This is my most unfounded speculation, so members with greater knowledge feel free to step in and elaborate.

  11. If we are actually getting a house for The Thing prequel, does anyone have an educated guess as to whether or not it will return to Sprung Tent #1? I know it's a little hard to tell because only a few code names have leaked for that location, but I was wondering if Universal would follow suite by placing it in a sound stage, like the other theatrical promotions, or if they'll decide to keep the staging similar to Assimilation, thus returning it to a tent. With the talk of a possible WWI house and a hospital also in the sound stages, I've just been thinking about where everything would potentially fit.

  12. OK just doing some research...

Eoin Colfer - wrote some fantasy books. I know one was The Arctic Incident. The Thing has been widely speculated this year and could be a clue to that...

Peter Falk was in a lot of movies. He was in a casino movie (Machine Gun McCain)... but he's been in detective shows. Dr. Jimmy noted Wings of Desire.

Steve Jobs.. The only thing I can think of would be apple. As in a literary reference to apples... like snow white or something.

Yeah, Jobs... I have nothing rational for that one. And I've been hoping that The Thing Prequel would get it's own house since I found out about it.

This is kind of separate, but what if private eyes and dicks are going to be used in some way this year? If there's a chance that we're getting some mob involvement, then I'd guess detectives aren't so far of a stretch for that time period as well.

  13. Ok, I moved this excerpt over from the Speculation II thread...

As for Falk, Colfer, and Jobs, here's some loose threads that I came up thanks to wikipedia. Some of it's almost too easy, and none of it fits together all too well, but, hey, that's speculation.

"Peter Falk was an American actor, best known for his role as Lieutenant Columbo in the television series Columbo. He appeared in numerous films such as The Princess Bride, The Great Race and Next, and television guest roles and was nominated for an Academy Award twice (for 1960's Murder, Inc. and 1961's Pocketful of Miracles)..."

"Murder, Inc. is a 1960 American gangster film starring Stuart Whitman, May Britt, Henry Morgan, Peter Falk, and Simon Oakland...The screenplay was based on the true story of Murder Inc., a Brooklyn gang that operated in the 1930s."

"Murder Inc. was the name given by the press to organized crime groups in the 1920s through the 1940s that resulted in hundreds of murders on behalf of the American Mafia and Jewish Mafia groups who together formed the early organized crime groups in New York and elsewhere. It was established after the formation of the commission of the National Crime Syndicate, to which it ultimately answered. Largely headed by former mob enforcers Benjamin "Bugsy" Siegel and Meyer Lansky..."

"Eoin Colfer is an Irish author. He is most famous as the author of the Artemis Fowl series, but he has also written other successful books."

"Artemis Fowl II is an Irish child prodigy and a ruthless master criminal. He uses his intelligence to building his family fortune through crime."

"Steve Jobs is also a Beatles fan. He has referenced them on more than one occasion at Keynotes and also was interviewed on a showing of a Paul McCartney concert. When asked about his business model on 60 Minutes, he replied, 'My model for business is The Beatles: They were four guys that kept each other's negative tendencies in check; they balanced each other. And the total was greater than the sum of the parts. Great things in business are not done by one person, they are done by a team of people.'"

The Jobs one is a stretch, I know. All I can come up with is organized crime as a shared insinuation though.

If any of this is pertinent, then this riddle is more long-winded than I am. lol

  14. I've heard from my source that we will NOT be getting an extreme house this year. Even if I doubted his credibility (which I most certainly do not), he has a point: if we were getting an upcharge house, the site would already have information on it for people ordering tickets.

That makes logical sense to me. But, then I found this via Google:

    http://attractionsmagazine.com/blog/2010/10/03/howl-o-screams-alone-haunted-house-offers-a-unique-personal-experience/

"Many park guests balk at the $34.95 extra charge to enter the house. But Busch Gardens staff has made it so the cost is eased if you look at the details. If booked online at MyXRocks.com, the charge comes down to $24.95. Up to four people can go through for the one charge. That’s brings it down to $6.23 to $8.74 per person."

Can anyone clarify how this charge worked last year? Like, were there any stipulations, such as you had to purchase it at the same time as your initial ticket? If it was offered as a separate transaction, then I could see an extreme house as actually having potential for this year. I'd also be curious to know at what point in time was it announced to the public and how. Probably through the Hall-O-Scream site and probably sometime near the beginning of the season, but I know practically nothing about the event, so I don't want to assume.

  15. I just bought a basic, black t-shirt with the ScareActor Part-Time Skull on it. : ) There's a 17.76% off promo code that runs through Monday. With the cheapest shipping, it brought the total price down to $23.69.

  16. Am I the only one who thinks tossing Cindy into this just seems... well, almost silly? I thought we were getting new characters? I like the Cindy character a lot, but for this theme to work she'd have to be much, much older - and then they'd either have to go the F.E.A.R./Alma route and make her decomposed and grotesque, or make her ultra-sexy but lethal (Howl-O-Scream style). The former could work with another character, but I just don't see it with Cindy. The latter should be left to the event mentioned.

I agree with the frustrations over the lack of solid icon backstory. I still never completely understood what the hell happened with Jack. Or Cindy, for that matter - isn't Cindy dead if Screamhouse Resurrection to be believed? Bloody Mary became needlessly convoluted. We don't have any real backstory for the Storyteller or FEAR at all. I think The Director and Usher are the only two where we have some sort of tangible story. When the original Twenty Years of Fear teaser site went up last year, I saw the "Icons" tab and got excited - I figured we were finally going to get a concrete, fool-proof account of each of the icon's stories to prep us for the 20th anniversary. Instead we got a handful of photographs for a bunch of non-icons. Surely it can't be that hard to mull through the information out there and put out an official release, Universal?

So, yes. No Cindy this year, please. Or have her appear, but not in a damn Casino. That's just a huge stretch after her death with the Caines. Not to mention the lack of connection between a pyro and gambling...

    ---

Another point - regarding The Usher being a conduit, and the new icon being a conduit to The House. I really, really liked this idea with The Usher - much better than the thought of just the "evil theater" being our antagonist. But they only really toyed with the idea of the Theater being "alive" in The Usher's introductory monologue and I guess in the explanation of The Usher's death... it never really manifested itself anywhere in the event. There was no climactic "The Theater Is Alive!!" moment in Silver Screams or anywhere else. Not to mention that whole idea kind of went out the window when it turned out The Usher was a pawn for FEAR (ugh I hate this cannon so much) all along. So my point is, if they're going to try the Conduit again, don't hint at it once - show us that The House is a very real, very dangerous presence and our Dealer or Lady Luck is only acting as its agent.

Finally, regarding Carey Ohio - the town wasn't known for its sewers, a Bloody Mary myth connection, or its schoolhouse - so I'd wager that if A&D wanted a casino to exist there, they'll make one exist there. Carey's kind of the creepy dumping ground location for scary locations. Plus, if Cindy's presence as rumored turns out to be true, it only makes sense that this casino is close to home...

Agree, agree, agree, and agree. I'm glad I'm not the only one with these feelings and ideas. As much as I want Atlantic City minus Cindy, if she is going to be an intimidate part of this theme, the casino needs to either be in Carey or very, very close to it... sigh. I really want a clean slate.

  17. I see your point - I agree they can't be used in excess. But one, maybe two per house max (unless we're talking a special house like SAW) really heightens the tension and sense of danger. Especially if it's toward the beginning of the house. You need those awe-inspiring moments to really set the bar high.

Also: surprised this hasn't been mentioned yet. I know we're all hoping for some sort of Atlantic Boardwalk location, but has anyone considered that Carey, Ohio might have an old casino or pier?

At first, I thought you had a really good point, and I still think you do, but do you think Carey, Ohio is part of the cannon that's been laid to rest? Or because Cindy has been tiptoed around it'll be allowed to continue forward with her?

The consistency of some of the icons' back-stories is something that's really frustrated me, and not just because of production complications -like what Cindy, Eddie, and Fate endured- but because of generally poor proofreading and fact checking, so to speak. I know there's a lot of amateur avenues for HHN information and history, and a few professional ones as well, but I think it's high time someone actually fashioned it's legacy into a biography of some kind. The archive site was a good start, but I want something tangible.

Something else that equally frustrates me is that as a scare-actor I don't get to attend any of the VIP presentations or special salons that take place during the actual event. It's an extra disadvantage not closely knowing any of the regular fans who attended.

  18. The Atlantic City setting and time period for this theme makes me the most excited. There's a lot of historic material that could be fictionalized or used with creative license. I like it better than modern day Vegas, the Old West, or a ship style casino. I don't know why, but the riverboat idea makes me quickly think of Zombie Gras and its New Orleans/Cajun style. And, if stretched correctly, I think an official icon isn't necessary for this theme. A more static antagonist would be sufficient, someone to just lend their face to the event, and not necessarily be the central attraction. Like, have Lady Luck, Fate, or The Dealer, but let him/her be a device of the theme, instead of the theme being a projection of his/her psyche or character. Sort of a mix of how "What's Your Breaking Point?" was marketed/staged and how the Terra Queen ended up being used in Tales of Terror. More of a possibly, make them a device of the House -Mr. Grady, Overlook Hotel esque, not like how the icons were with Fear-. A&D would have more freedom with the individual house concepts if this was the case, and I agree with the people who've guessed that Universal might be trying out some new era dynasty house ideas. Oh, wow, a haunted house based around Dynasty... better stick with my day job. Or, at least jumping out at people for minimum wadge. : P

  19. This is just a thought, but what if the literary quotes are broader hints regarding one centralized concept, instead of many centralized hints (literature) regarding one broader concept (the event theme or event icon)? For example: Maybe they all are related to just one, singular house or one house/scare zone combo. I'm not sure how a lot of the work or credit is divided up within A&D, but what if Emeric is hinting at something that he had sole or direct creative license over? Are there any classic or influential literary works celebrating an anniversary this year that do NOT belong to the horror genre? For me, it would be more of a challenge to take something well know and turn it into a dark or gory, comprehensive variation than it would be to take something bizarre and macabre and simply depict it just as that, bizarre and macabre. Poe and King are fun, but they're almost too easy. Maybe they are embracing the mashup trend, but trying to create their own hybrid instead of just creating an attraction based on preexisting source material; like, instead of having a Pride and Pride and Prejudice and Zombies scare zone or an Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter house, they've created their own seemingly random coupling. For instance, The Great Gatsby meets an alien invasion, like War of the Worlds, or if you want to go dark humor Mars Attacks. I'm NOT saying that that specific idea is what Universal is going to do this year, so no one misunderstand me, please. It's just an example. Separately, has there even been a main attraction house in recent years (late 90s to now) that wasn't directly related to the event theme or icon (once that era began)?
