  1. I wonder how long the squishy swamp floors will last. I know last year they got rid of some of the floors in Tomb. I really hope the Voodoo Queen will make an appearance and get to do her sacrifice.

A movie themepark with almost NOTHING original in it (is there anything original in the park now other than Rip Rocket?  Dueling Dragons is closing and also somehow considered Potter-related now, everything is IP based) has a seasonal event...it SHOULD be movie based.  It would be like Sea World having an event based on lions and tigers or Disney World having an event with Looneytoons characters.

This isn't settling, it's evolving.  It's living up to the (perceived) mission statement of a Movie Theme Park that has active TV studios on property.  It's a success story that the event is so well respected in the industry that people who are VERY protective of their IPs are willing to let a theme park take over their babies and create a fluid and evolving experience.

This this 100% all of this.

Also, there are so many negative comments on here good lord people. Use your energy for something better than endless bitching on a forum for a Halloween event.

Anyways, has anyone been able to figure out how "hive" relates to a vampire house? Is there a queen bee vampire ordering around her vampire workers? Omg did I just figure it out? I wonder if we're going to face a giant Queen Vampire at the end of the house final boss level style.

Still surprised Blumhouse hasn't been announced yet. I'm starting to think there's a reason for the delay. Perhaps something changed and we have more than Sinister, Purge, and Insidious in the house.

Either that or they originally wanted to give us more and now they aren't able to. I'm hoping they do something other than Insidious and Purge in that house. Sinister should be great but I would also love to see Oculus, and Hush. They could do some really cool stuff with Oculus.

Umm... some of those years didn't even have IPs, so just judging from all the past Houses of the Year is a bit unfair.

I think that a fairer assessment would be to only look at the years that emphasized the IPs (2007, 2009, 2012-16), since they're what started this discussion in the first place.

    2007 - IP

2009 - IP (could make the argument that it's an original)

    2012 - Original

    2013 - IP

    2014 - Tie

    2015 - Original

    2016 - IP

Counting it up, we've got 5-3 in favor of IPs (4-4 if you count Dracula: LoB as an original).  Admittedly, the IPs did have a numbers advantage for these years, but my point still stands: IPs can and have put out amazing houses.

Also, overall house rankings might actually be better in this case.  Do we have those for the listed year?

I should've clarified in my second post, I started counting at 2007. I'm smart enough to know not to count the years that didn't even have IPs.

  5. Ok so, looks like IP vs. Original for house of the year comes out with Originals having more (in case anyone was wondering). I know this has been said before, as much as I love the original houses it would seem weird for Universal to NOT have houses based on IPs. Other theme parks can get away with 100% originals, but for a theme park that is already completely based around IPs, it would only make sense to have their Halloween event include IPs.

Agreed; they had a really good concept with the Soul Collectors too and could've used that to their advantage

I'm pretty sure they planned on doing something more with the Soul Collector idea and it fell through. I also think that countdown was originally for something much better than a damn wallpaper. I swear, I want a tell-all book from the Universal staff about this year's horror nights. There's no way all of this was just out of pure laziness. Some kind of shit had to have gone down.

So, it's Thursday.  Shall we start taking bets?

There's less than a month before the first date. I'm guessing we'll get our full reveal about 2 weeks from now. I would LOVE to be a fly on the wall at Universal's offices right now. There's got to be something going on to make this year the way it is and I'm curious as to whether it's trial and error of a different marketing technique or if they were having a lot of issues with things and don't want to announce things until they know for a fact they can use them for the whole event. However, I don't understand why they haven't/can't announce the originals when they've already started tweeting out photos from them.

As someone from the midwest that lived in FL a few years I can tell you.... FL is a different planet when it comes to seasonal type things like that. Its too hot, nothing changes color, etc. A lot of the things people in the north associate with Falll/Halloween doesnt happen in the south. But I think HHN does a great job of recreating that feel, granted we are sweating our asses off! LOL

But any southern folk that havent experienced a bonfire on a cool Fall evening or even an out door party on halloween up here its highly recommended!  Also bonus for me this year.... our local haunted (voted #1 in Illinois!) will be going full steam on Friday the 13th this year! I work with the guy that runs it and we are pretty stoked that its happening like that this year!

I sold my soul to a certain mouse last year so I've spent every season in FL. Even though I've worn shorts and a t shirt to every HHN I've gone to, I would still gladly sip hot apple cider walking through the scarezones. Last year I substituted that with hot butterbeer (10/10 strongly recommend). Even though it's usually hot/warm, i still think they would make a killing selling fall treats at a booth.

Maybe even sell some seasonally appropriate foods/drinks at each end of the zone so people can really get in the Halloween spirit (ciders, fritters, etc).

Listen, I would cry happy tears all over that damn park if they sold hot cider/fritters/cider donuts/pumpkin goodness. Don't get my hopes up. WHY do they not offer proper fall/Halloween snacks??

  10. Moving along though: who here went to HHN when it was at Islands? Was it any good there? With all the construction plans, it looks like HHN at Islands may be making a comeback. It's so heavily themed though I'm interested to hear how that worked.

On a happier note, pumpkins have appeared in the Central Park trees.

At least this will clear the way for "Bill and Tedd's Triumphant Return" at HHN30...

Agreed. I don't see Bill and Ted being gone forever. They're such an HHN staple that they'll be back. I think they just need to figure out where they can put them first.

From what I hear the "icon" may or may not happen. If it does it'll be the biggest thing for HHN ever. If it doesn't they have the soul collectors as a backup.

knowing the above I have a theory as to what is going on, and a good understanding why it is so difficult to pull off an announce.

Marketing still suck. They should have had a plan B. But if they pull this off it'll be l majestical

This is absolutely true too-if I had the chance to wait outside the gates it totally would have overwhelmed me & I definitely would have psyched myself out. The first time I went we did Scareactor Dining, so we were escorted in before the event started. Then once we finished I do remember looking down the street towards the entrance to see throngs of people near AHS, so we just walked straight ahead to Exorcist instead. There were only 2 people in front of us, and a family of 4 behind us. The lady up front was super cheerful & smiley, I was so excited!

Basically I walked in to The Exorcist like this...10744td.jpg

    and walked out like this...anh94z.jpg

A+ gif usage. I don't know about you, but that house was the only one that gave me a sense of impending doom. I had to go buy myself a churro afterwards.

I could know where someone will jump out. I'd still mess myself. Hence this first time I planned ahead and was sponsered by tenor lady. For people who want to wet themselves at HHN discretely

(btw the above is very sarcastic British humour)

Honestly, try your best not to look scared or they will go after you. I agree with DraculaTeeth that your first house is probably going to be the worst because you don't know what to expect, but just get yourself a twisted tator and all will be good. My very first house ever was Halloween during 24 because I figured since I was familiar with it, it wouldn't be as scary. I'm pretty sure the people behind us thought I was part of the house because of how loud I was screaming. Fortunately, there was no one in front of us. Diagon Alley is another good spot to get your nerves down.

I've also found that trying to (politely) banter with the scareactors makes it more fun. There's a good chance they'll still go after you or partner with another scareactor to get you, but at least you'll have a laugh about it. Like last year I went and got a fishy green ale from Diagon Alley and started to walk through fisherman's wharf when one of the scareactors approached me and got in my face. I said hi and he pointed at my drink and I went "oh crap is this inappropriate to drink here?" And I could tell the scareactor laughed and then shortly after I had a hook inches from my throats from a scareactor behind me.

But real talk, you'll be fine and you'll have a blast! Going by yourself is amazing because you get to do what you want and you'll notice more things. Have fun, man!

I honestly don't get the whole poutine thing. But each to their own. Back home we have the parmo which is amazing. Google parmo and if something about Middlesbrough comes up that's it. If HHN sold that I'd literally spend every night eating that

It's just me. Poutine is non existent where I'm from and I tried it for the first time last year in Disney Springs and fell in love. I want it any chance I get.

I don't know about you guys, but I would LOVE to know what Mike thinks about marketing's plan this year.

  16. Ok I'm bored at work so I decided to ask Mr. Google where the poutine is at HHN and according to my findings, it's at the stand labeled Loaded Fries (makes sense, duh). Whoever goes to HHN first, please report back to me with your findings and whether or not they compare to the poutine at Disney Springs. This is an important mission.

What other flavours do they do? Do they do chilli? Love a bit of spicy food

Like I said before, only for those in the US. For the rest of us it was a bit of a kick in the teeth

If I remember correctly, they have Garlic, Salt & Vinegar, and Season Salt. Nothing spicy. And then of course there's the mysterious poutine.
