So it's almost Halloween and I wanted to post some final thoughts before my last night in attendance. This year has had some of my favorite houses ever. Surprisingly for the first time ever my list really didn't change from most anticipated to what turned out to be my favorite. The only exception was Nightingales briefly, but what a comeback they had!

A couple of people have commented that this year seems 'weird' or 'off'. I think a better term for this year would be experimental. There are some amazing houses that really clicked with what I wanted from the event. In addition US, Ghostbusters and Killer Klowns were amazing film-to-house adaptions. In my personal opinion an issue some of the fans had with these houses were not with their quality but their scare factor - that's not anyone but the IPs fault if that was an issue. Quite frankly Ghostbusters, US and Killer Klowns are not scary films - especially when compared to IP houses such as Halloween or Poltergeist which achieved being the best adaptation and one of if not the scariest houses in their respective years.

I now understand one of the reasons why we've gotten Halloween 4 times over the past few years. Michael Myers is scary and the character works regardless of the quality of the film it's based off of. One of the reasons the originals ended up being so much scarier than other houses is the same reason Nightingales went from a rough house to a worthy sequel. The actors could find their groove and intensity to develop an already scary creature and environment into frightening experience. No matter how good a Ghostbuster is at filling his role, he will simply never get scarier. Ghostbusters (and Stranger Things last year) are some of the best theme park attractions Florida has seen in years but are only decent Haunted Houses. A final note on the issue of IPs: Us is so different and ridiculously good at the end of the night/ when it's empty. The scare actors are incredibly creepy and its unlike anything I've seen at HHN.

With all of the above said, adaptation preference is simply that - a preference on what elements the event has. The REAL issue this year was the scare-zones. This is where the experimental issues were the most present. It's like every different zone had different testing elements. I do truly feel that they're trying to figure out how to proceed with scare zones now and into the future. I expect them to eventually hit the mark, after all, HNN does this event better than anyone else. I still don't like a single thing about Vanity Ball though (and I really don't like saying anything like that about a part of the event. I know A&D and the actors work very had to make the event so fun).

I had a great time so far this year and can't wait to go back for a final trip. I loved hearing everyone's experiences and stories and I appreciate all those who post who keep me coming back to this forum. Happy Halloween everyone! Make sure to follow all the rules and avoid a visit from Sam because it's almost speculation season again!

I feel like this year was a good one to do experimental stuff with. Year before anni, what’s to lose?

To be honest, I didn't think the house was at all scary. When it was announced, I thought they were gonna make this house unbelievably terrifying. The sets were cool, the Yetis looked freaking amazing, and the cold really made this house awesome. This house is probably in my top 10 of all time. I think we need a Midnight Snack house in the future. ;)

I’d love to see a haunted pizzeria original (keyword on original and not...you know) soon. “Fun Time: Ghosts of Lizzie Lemming’s”

  3. Nice read Jim, even if I disagree with a lot of it.

SotD would make more sense as a Universal property, but I prefer Zombieland personally.

I get the angst over the loss of B&T, but man oh man I thought the show was abysmal in 2016. Not that I care at all about AoV either, mind you.

Although Mr. Aiello has left HHN, you probably won't notice it during HHN 30.  That has been under design long before he left.

We've seen some stunning houses recently from Patrick Braillard and Charles Gray; I'm sure the future of HHN is in good hands.

When are you going this year? I always anticipate your really long review.

ugh so quiet... I mean I guess the event is what it is, I have to wait until the end of October for my trip, but I miss when the forums used to be so hot and active during the HHN season with theories and things like that during the immersive times doing our games and Legendary Truth stuff. Still awesome event but I guess less to discuss now. It has opened, everything is revealed and yep....thats it

Come over to IU. Active as ever.

I feel the fandom is still there.  But, many are aging out of the days of being able to post and search and do the 'back in the day' things you mentioned.   I am a late bloomer to this party and got hooked so fast it wasn't funny.   But, I have even noticed a turn in the direction of the event.   I recently watched Theme Park Review's History of HHN on YouTube and found it to be pretty good.  They were able to highlight some of the missteps that the HHN team have made over the years and how HHN has pretty much propped up the parks until a certain wizard came along.    I see what you mean about the earlier years of HHN and I see where they are headed now.   Fear is not as fun or as important as profit.    The online backstories are declining year over year and with so many IP houses, which don't require any back story, I feel that portion of Creative is also declining.   Look at this year's merch.   Its almost all ST and GB as the main focus.  Not only is the event turning soft, they are not creating anything, they are just riding the IPs.   Which all leads to less and less to talk about.

The other thing, as mentioned, Vlogs.   I know that Saturday the 7th, my wife will have the video up and we will see the inside of each house.   Gone are the days of videos stopping at the entrance and picking up at the exit of the house.   Now, as credentialed media, certain vloggers push the entire event out the 2nd day.  All of us who wait until later in the year don't have anything to really talk about or even banter about with those who have gone.

    Stranger Things was soooooo successful

GhostBusters!?  Wow!  I'm so stoked for a comedy house!

How the hell do they bring back an icon (any of them) if the event is going to continue to run towards the tween demographic?

"We are NOT becoming family friendly"
Brings back ST, GB, Killer Klownz....

Let me be clear and say that I do not think the event is at all perfect. That disclaimer out of the way...

...there’s seven other houses. And back in the day there would still be one lighter house. So same number of straight houses this year as, say, 18 and 21.

Still, I definitely prefer the originals this year over the IPs (sans Killer Klownz). I present Nightingales Blood Pit to argue that they still do complex stories.

Also, IU has as active a discussion each year as Vault did, IIRC.

We might have the same idea. I was had a HUGE Interstellar Terror vibe walking through it.

See, I found IT and DoF scarier than both DEs. Gritty, tight, industrial, futuristic disasters are my horror niche, I guess.

    Phantasm

    Hellraiser

Friday the 13th (other than the NLC versions)

    The Fly

    It (Remake)

    Little Shop of Horrors

    Bioshock

    Little Nightmares

    Doom

The issue is, a lot of the older more popular/top rated IP's have been done.  You'll have to rely on newer stuff that's coming out.  I love Zombie movies, but let's face it.. it's all the same thing other than the story.

I still prefer original over IP's, but the general public wouldn't come in masses for that and bitch how the event sucks.

Are any of those not off limits?

This is my personal favorite house this year.  The costumes are a little cheesy, but that honestly adds to the charm.  Kinda reminds me of Creatures! from 2008.  Apparently there's a "controversial" scene in the house, referring to a dog?  My friend who went with me mentioned it, can anybody tell me about that?

Feels very much like a house from 2008 to me too, but not the same one.

    Or...more crowds = more money

more money = more funds for houses and scareactors

more houses and scare actors = bigger event

eventually I want to see both universal AND IoA to be all horror night’d up

Doesn't change the fact that there's less time they can take without using certain scare tactics. Also means they're going to have to streamline/simplify house design. More than 10 houses is a BAD idea, guys.

Unrelated to this year, but it's crazy knowing HHN 30 is next year. I'm just imagining how big it's gonna be... Plus I remember it was said next year it's gonna be cranked up to 11 or 12 houses? HYPE!

Hard, HARD pass. More houses = fewer scareactors per house, as well as a reduction in time they can take off from using certain scares, making the event feel more "samey." If you wish to spread out the crowds keep more rides open. Aside from which, it sounds like crowds are *somewhat* better this year, granted it's still early.

I recall extensive damage to haunts in 2004 when Jeanne wrecked Field of Screams at HHN and Corporate Nightmare at HOS.   HOS had to relocate the whole Corporate Nightmare house just before the event started.  Other than some flooding, HHN has not missed many nights due to hurricanes.   I was so surprised to see HHN take a second stab at growing a cornfield in  2017, only to see Irma chew it up.

In 14 years of going to HHN Orlando, I've only experienced one event night cancelled due to weather.

Best wishes to all of you out there.  I know landfall is 4-5 days off still.  I don't know how you handle it.  Out here in California, the only natural disasters are earthquakes and inept government.  I can't imagine what it would feel like if we could see an earthquake coming 4-5 days out.

    Wildfires too.

They are embracing the hell out of the 80's this time around.  They need a hat that has mullet hair coming out the sides and back!

Dear God, I had a mullet back in the day...

Look at all those pin sets.  Not to mention all the shirts that aren't listed here.

This is going to be an expensive year...

I'm glad marketing is actually embracing the '80s "theme" this year. Makes it feel closer to...you know, a theme.

    Thanks for the correction.
HHN Hollywood has 10 houses this year (but counts TWD attraction as one of them), and has no Terror Tram.

So including TWD, 9 houses have been announced with one to go (which is speculated to be Pandora's Box, so no blue scareactors having sex with their tails)

I'm the King of the Woooooorrrrrrllllllld!

As much as I’m excited for Us (after somehow predicting it correctly a few months ago???), I would be lying if I said I wasn’t kinda sad to see Tooth Fairy go. However, the more I started thinking about it, the more I started realizing that it was probably for the best.

Perhaps the biggest roadblock to getting Tooth Fairy would have to be Knott's. As many of you probably know, Knott's Berry Farm in California has had a popular maze based around the legend of the Tooth Fairy at their Halloween event for a couple years now. Knott's has seen a rather large increase in attendance for their Halloween event and is a formidable opponent to USH. Their competitor’s sister park having a Tooth Fairy maze would be very suspicious, even if the ideas aren’t exactly the same. My guess is that UO realized this and decided to scrap it. I have also wondered if Us was originally gonna be a Hollywood exclusive like Creepshow but was brought over to Orlando as a fix-it.

Also, if the “Bedtime Stories” concept was in fact true, I really hope they bring that to the event next year. Besides, this year’s event seems to be very focused on myths and legends (Abominable Snowman in Terror of the Yukon, the legend of the cemetery in Graveyard Games, hell I’d even say Ghostbusters with their ghost mythology). This coupled with the fact that next year is an important HHN anniversary, it may be a clue to next year’s icon.....

We're acting like they're on a baloney and white bread budget here.

They've got the cash...  They can shell out for a decent front gate without it eating into their bottom line too badly.  Just throw up three more alcohol tents.  BAM.  SOLVED.

Bottom line, I want the whole event to remain immersive.  Sure, it probably won't happen because Joe Six-Pack probably doesn't care about what a front gate looks like, but I'm still putting it out there.

I don't put it in a signature or my profile, but I've been doing HHN since it was simply Fright Nights.  I'm an OG.  And in being an old codger, I am ridiculously opinionated on what I want to see and how the event has changed (and continues to change).

    :)

Now to be fair, I don't think the entrance was really decorated until 17-23. I know for a fact that 16 was no more decorated than 24-present.

So on the subject of Stranger Things, I highly doubt season 4 comes before 2021. Would they take a year off of the property at 30 and allow maybe Haunting of Hill House to take its place for a year (and likely TWD for the movie)?
