  1. That's not even taking into account that the Thing "seems" to fly in the face of everything we were told last year. We were told that the event would avoid movie houses and "remakes/sequels/prequels" from the last twenty years and the first announced house is both. We understand that A&D, as much as they enjoy The Thing movie, probably didn't have as much say in this as management did, and that is leading to our frustration.

Did they ever specifically say no more movie houses? I don't remember that from last year. Even if A&D or Universal PR said it, it seems kinda silly to assume they'd NEVER do film tie-ins.

  2. yeah, lol, i just couldn't get it, but like i said I like Saw, which seems to be the punching bag for horror fans when they want to explain how old horror is better and how new horror is poop,

still, i dont know how suspiria can be categorized as horror

A plot involving witches and sacrifices? Vivid, screeching imagery and sound to suggest paranoia and the occult? Definitely horror.

Suspiria is a classic, BUT I understand it can be a bit difficult to get into Dario Argento's films at first. He immediately assaults you with his visuals before you may be able to comprehend the plot (though the stories he tells are pretty simple).

As for the Saw comparisons, it's narrow minded to think of ideal horror with only one end of the wide spectrum (whether it's slasher, gothic, giallo, etc.) Now, I don't think any of the Saw movies are actually GOOD (though I do enjoy them all of varying degrees), but they definitely have their place. The fact it and Suspiria can share a kinship shows how wonderfully diverse horror can be.

  3. Speaking as a former Thing: Assimilation cast member, yes, we had issues with drunks messing with the actors operating the monsters. There was a night where the dog puppet actor did get a pretty serious arm injury (some idiot slammed both fists RIGHT DOWN on the puppet), but he luckily didn't have anything broken.

One effect didn't even make it past employee preview night. In the hallway before the rec room, one of the windows on the right had a Thing face that would pop out. It ended up getting torn down by someone, and I don't think it got replaced.

  4. I know Universal has been impressing upon us that this will be a farewell year for many icons and traditions, and I really do hope that they stick to their guns on it. I'm all for starting fresh and wouldn't mind if Jack, the Caretaker, the Usher, the Storyteller, and the Director were put into storage for a good while. Even under-utilized icons like Mary, Eddie, Cindy, Darkness, Terra Queen, etc. should probably ake a break for now. Again, love'em all, but seeing new characters will be more exciting.

Old franchises and houses need to be concluded too. No more Psychoscareapy, Body Collectors, All Nite Die-In, Treaks, Chainsaw Drill Team, etc. Don't bring back Midway of the Bizarre, Deadtropolis, or whatever favorites fans may have.

Looking at HHNXX, there are some interesting ideas that could develop more in future years. The most obvious new franchise would most likely be the continuing story of Z-Day from Zombiegeddon and Zombie Gras. I don't immediately recall HHN having a reaccuring zombie franchise, and it seems you could imagine some good houses or zones from seeing how Z-Day has affected various parts of the country.

I'd love to see Havoc's Dogs of War take it to the streets. Give'em a scarezone!

The New Yorkshire setting from Saws 'n Steam seems like a ripe idea too. I'm not really a fan of steampunk, but making a house out of that theme could be cool.

Legendary Truth could be a neat franchise too. Not saying there will be constant haunted houses, but maybe the houses can take place in different investigations exploring bizarre phenomenon (UFOs, cryptozoology, etc.) Very X-Files like.

  5. Could someone explain what happened to the Puritans? I know some didn't really care for them, but I had nothing but nice things to say - they were great ad-libbers and still managed to get scares, not to mention excellent interaction with the Sirens.

I did two nights as a Puritan and had a lot of fun. Ad-libbing and guest interaction was a nice change of pace from aggressive scaring.

I believe the actors who were Puritans later became ugly witches and hags. It seemed like changes were made to some zones as the month went on to make them scarier (cloaked scareactors and shaker props in Muerte, the disappearance of the infected human on the float in Gras, etc.)

  6. Foon or whatever, I don't know who you were. But the first time we went through your room that night you were jumping around like you were crazy. We talked about you being dead tired at the end of the night. You proved us wrong. I went through on a bunch of your sets and every time you'd jump with me even the closing cast. Amazing. Just amazing.

That was me! Glad you enjoyed it!

  7. And I touched on my second rant in the Legendary Truth forum but I'll mention it again here- why do people go through haunted houses if they think everything is stupid? I've never been through a house like that where every single person in the line was completely stone-faced. The actors don't always get me but I at least smile or show some kind of human emotion, these people looked like they were touring an open house or something. I just saw a ton of people last night who looked completely bored or annoyed when the scare-actors were trying to get them and the actors were working so hard. I just don't understand why people pay so much to come to a place like HHN to try and have a terrible time!

This. Oh well, they paid around $80 to not have a good time. Their loss!
