  1. Can someone explain to me why people are very outspoken about houses using licensed material? You'd think people would eat this stuff up considering HHN is the only haunted attraction that has the ability to use movies and properties and such, but from the impression I get on forums it seems like these types of houses are immediately dismissed before any actual information is known about it. I realize this house has a previous house to base your opinion on, but it many other instances this is not the case. Are they all really that bad? Or do people just really prefer original material? The first year I heard about HHN it was Carnival of Carnage and I was really hyped for all of the licensed houses and last year there were absolutely none so I was a little disappointed...but that seems to be the opposite of everyone else's feeling. I'm honestly just curious about it.

Halloween Horror Nights isn't the only place that uses movies as houses. Knott's Berry Farm had houses based on The Grudge 2, Beowulf, and Quarantine, and a haunt in St. Louis is doing a SAW 3D haunted attraction.

But it's generally the fact that HHN had a Thing house in '07 that people are quick to not like this particular attraction. Even though the house in '07 was a SEQUEL to the original film and the new house is based off the REMAKE, which is also the PREQUEL to the original film (not to mention The Thing finally gets to be in a soundstage as quite a number of people were clamoring for a Thing sequel to take place in one).

  2. The fact that the commercial is still up on YouTube and Universal hasn't tried to get them pulled (that would actually make a great marketing gimmick) means they most likely expected or even wanted to get this "leaked", so to speak.

Also, interesting they got Fergie to work HHN for them. :P

  3. A new rumor has surfaced recently that there will actually be no Icon nor Icon House this year, that Lady Luck would then only appear in promotional material for the event like the mental patient from 2004. I find this rather difficult to accept as I cannot see how they would spend so much money developing the whole 21 theme on the website and the character which seems to be a rather strong Icon like character with the potential of being the "new face" of HHN that FEAR didn't quite manage to achieve last year.

Well, the majority of the 2004 website was themed to a series of case files of patients inside Shadybrook Asylum, yet there was no asylum haunt at the event.

  4. I really have no other speculations at this time. I was wondering how far people had gotten in the building of the card house. What is the farthest progress shot? Would someone be willing to post it?

This is the furthest the house of cards has reached after two games:

    houseocards.jpg

  5. Loose Cannon will most likely coincide with our Spanish/Pirate clue.

    Wave is a toss-up.

And Certain Rune is Tent 1.

The won't have a game for the Casino (because you're IN the casino) and probably won't have a game for The Thing because of licensing purposes.

That doesn't make much sense if the colored tokens at the bottom of the screen represent the different houses, of which there are 8. That's like saying they didn't need an article for Silver Screams because we were already in the theater. And they've never excluded the icon/main house from the site's festivities. Also, they didn't have a problem doing games for Dead Silence, Friday the 13th, NOES, TCM, and Assimilation.

  6. Actually, now I'm starting to see another possibility for the Disaster queue. What if it's some sort of candy factory? The holiday idea seems a bit more likely, but a candy factory could be interesting too.

People were speculating a while back about the idea of a horror version of Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory, and someone mentioned the film Gobstopper as a reference point.

  7. Agreed on the scarezone to house comments. We've seen plenty of examples of a house becoming a zone (Skool -> Skoolhouse, Castle Vampyr -> Blood Masquerade, Scary Tales -> Fractured Tales) but I have yet to hear of a zone becoming a house. The closest example I can think of is the Treaks & Foons room in Hallow'd Past - and I felt that was more of a copout than anything.

I was under the assumption that The Hallow was the house treatment of Harvest of the Souls from 2006. At least, to me, those two felt a wee bit similar in scenery and premise, so to speak.

  8. I wonder how wide the thresholds really are for recycled and original content respectively this year. With a S&S house heavily hinted at and most people unhappy about another movie house, let alone one that's being considered a rehash, I'm seriously doubting that we'll get to see some of last year's favorites as experimental franchises: Catacombs and Dogs of War. If S&S went from a street concept to a house, then does anyone think that one of these could do the reverse? So little is know about the streets at this time, and while I do think it'll push our tolerance levels you just never can tell with Universal.

It's been done before in the past. Deadtropolis started as a house in 2004, then moved out into the streets as Zombie Siege for '06's Sweet 16. Some believe '08's Skoolhouse to be the spiritual successor to the original Skool from Tales of Terror in 2005.

  9. So Orlando's house is the Thing, while Hollywood's is The Thing: Assimilation. Take it for what it's worth, but I believe that means Orlando will have a house that is completely different from it's older counterpart from '07. Hollywood may have something similar to what we had in the past, but I think we are in for something fresh and new, regardless if it is based on a movie. I have a feeling that this house will go in the same direction as The Wolfman house. I believe it will prove to some that the house can be better than the movie adaptation ( I for one did not enjoy the movie at all, but thought the house was fantastic for the Wolfman ). Universal is redoing a classic, which they have done many times in the past. HHN XIX redid three classics, and they were, to me, the best three houses of the event. So we should be optimistic about The Thing house until we have some cold, hard evidence that it lacks originality and scares.

Both houses are going to relatively be the same; it's just that Hollywood's has that extra tag at the end for whatever reason. Almost all of their recent houses have something extra at the end of the name, like Kill, Jason, Kill (Friday the 13th house), Game On (SAW house), or The Life and Crimes of Michael Myers (Halloween house).

  10. I LOVED the first house, don't know why, i know the complains, but, first that house managed to freak the hell out of me, i got really scared,

second, i loved what they did with the body and the thing hanging from the ceiling i really dont know why, maybe is because of the subject matter but the house scared me, and i loved the sets,

knowing is coming back has me SO happy!! i am really thrilled,

sorry if i missed it but, what building is the Thing house? is it a soundstage?

Recent speculation and hypotheses point The Thing house to be in SS22.

But I understand why some folks didn't like Assimilation due to the overuse of puppets/animatronics; they work best when A] the line is pulsed, and B] they aren't the focal point of the attraction. With option A, it's obvious because they can be reset when no one is around, and, therefore, everyone gets to experience the effect. With option B, the problem of overuse can be the same as the overuse of blood and gore in an attraction; too much of it is overkill and the rest of the house will suffer because of it (but only if the rest of the house isn't on par with the standout feature, which, 9 times out of 10, it isn't, thus the house fails).

  11. Boris was killed (not explicitly stated but the BM answering machine pretty much stated it) so I don't think he would be back.

IMHO if the detective clue is correct, I would think more along the lines of 20's - 30's mystery detective stories...

American Hard-Boiled Crime Fiction and the earlier, more elegant, Gentleman/detective "whodunit".

Nyet, Boris was alive. If I recall, he arrived at Dr. Agana's office to see the aftermath of an apparent scuffle between her and another worker. Not to mention I believe it was he who founded Legendary Truth in the first place after everything went down.

Besides, the whole Bloody Mary saga (at least when dealing with Mr. Shuster) took place in the 50s, a good 30 years after our supposed time frame for XXI (first two decades of the 20th century).

  12. Spanish Inquisition sounds more likely given the Prisoner codename. Knott's Berry Farm did a house a long time ago with the same theme of a sort of Spanish castle with people being tortured by said individuals. And for more information on said Inquisition, check out this link via Wikipedia.

Coincidentally, the majority of the group's actions were held in Seville, and I swear someone on here mentioned Seville as part of speculation...

  13. But what about the idea of the new show taking place on the Beetlejuice stage? I don't remember if it was said that Mr. Bushwood was coming back this year in the same spot he was in last, which was said stage. Although it would be much easier to theme a blank stage to a Vegas/Atlantic City casino backdrop for a showgirl show than it is to try and add to a dark, dank castle.

Yet going from six zones down to five is a bit awkward if it meant they weren't focusing their attention to more detail to go in for the other zones or houses. I'd bring up the 9th house idea again, but I'm afraid that dead horse is gonna come back and beat ME to death.

  14. I have begun to hear many interesting things from many different sources, some of whom are proving quite reliable. Although I will not share everything I have heard just yet, as I will wait for more details and further corroboration, I can say this:

I have now heard from multiple sources which I find reliable that for the past three weeks Universal has been calling in young ladies to model for sketches of Fate and Chance, yep they will be the Iconic duo after all.

Ah, so not only a tag team of icons, but a tag team of FEMALE icons. This will make for one lovely HHN, in my opinion...:)

  15. Not necessarily. They might only want to bring back one recognizable icon this year, basically throwing her into the event for marketing purposes. The sad fact of the matter is that A&D does NOT have full control over their event; anything they do has to be approved by the suits in charge, and they can change whatever they like or mess with the budget however they want.

Right, but I didn't say that she wouldn't be the ONLY one they would bring back, just that she wouldn't be THE one that would return if it were up to corporate. Especially not when there's an icon that's been in all but I believe two years out of this past decade, including XX...

  16. If Cindy was brought in, I would bet on it being a corporate decision rather than A&D. They're serious about wanting to do new things instead of always being tied to the past 20 years of work.

If it was a corporate decision, Cindy wouldn't be the one they would bring back...

  17. For the people who don't think a silent antagonist will work for Horror Nights, need I remind you of THESE minions?

    The-Body-Collectors66675.jpg

If I'm not mistaken, these guys are completely silent, yet they manage to scare the absolute sh!tes out of people regardless.

Anyway, the way you guys are talking about a Librarian icon, it sounds more like a silent Mary Shaw than anything. Think about it, the only way Ms. Shaw can kill someone is if the victim screams. Therefore, silence is golden (and duct tape is silver) when dealing with a threat that is attracted to sound. I find a silent monster infinitely more scary than one who won't shut their yap, which is why I prefer Jason and Michael over Freddy and Chucky (although Freddy has the added ability to kill people in their dreams).

Oh, and about that scarezone dedicated to bears...

    polar_bear_and_chainsaw.jpg

    .....yeah, I'm down.

  18. I'd venture to say it was the same bus. If I'm not mistaken, that may be the same bus that was used in 06's Deadtropolis and 04's Fright Yard scare zones (I think there was also a bus in the weird market scare zone where Field of Screams used to be in 05's Tales of Terror).

  19. They've done snuff films and hinted at necrophilia (in 2003 and 2002). Considering this is a New Era, I think the most effective way to emphasize that is use a theme people may consider taboo.

I don't think that IS what they're doing (I'm still too big a fan of a Gambling themed event this year), but there's no such thing as bad publicity; especially for a horror event.

And yes, Fate has been considered as something they could pull out of the archives.

Not to mention they ruffled a few pagan feathers when Samhain was thrust back into the spotlight as the Celtic God of the Dead in '08's The Hallow (yet another error associated with Halloween).
