  1. Hey Jeffrey,

I appreciate your enthusiasm, and you're correct that Hollywood tends to utilize movie-based IPs more often than Orlando does. That said, there have only been three events since 2000 that didn't feature a direct movie-themed house of some sort: 2002, 2005 and 2010. My point is, Orlando has not been immune from the movie IPs and that's not likely to change in the future.

It's the end of January and nobody outside of A&D knows anything for certain. It's not unreasonable for people to speculate on another movie theme for this year's event, so let's ease off on the attitude.

    ^^^^^^ Exactly. Well said :)

  2. I've got to agree with those who say The Caretaker. He may not be my "favorite" icon (that would still be The Director) but I have always maintained that he's the scariest. That voice... his look... living autopsies... sheesh. Just listen to the audio from the Screamhouse queue video. That is some scary, creepy stuff!

Jack has become like Freddy Krueger. Started out scary and now is just funny (almost a joke). People are more likely to hug him than run from him.

  3. Sheesh why is Dead Exposure getting such a bad rap? It was a creative and cool house.

Agreed. It wasn't the prettiest to look at but it was one of the scariest houses I've ever done because of the darkness and surprise factor.

I will, however, disagree about the classic Universal Monsters. I can't get enough of them. But that's just my personal preference. And I like the idea of them having one mash-up house in celebration of Universal's 100th anniversary.

And a Creature From The Black Lagoon house would be awesome!

  4. DTH I totally agree. I love original mazes but I go to Hollywood for the movie based mazes as well. I do want to see original content this year tho as I thought AC and la llorona were amazing. I like the idea of half and half.

Half and half is a great way to go. That's got my vote!

And I'd be sad to see the Shrek venue go for HHN but I won't miss the Shrek attraction AT ALL. God that thing sucks...

  5. Yes :P . It was my favorite horror movie of 2011, personally. It has a variety of characters and environments, and it was a pretty big hit. A sequel is even in early stages of production. We have never had a maze like it before and would add some nice variety.

Word. Best horror movie of the year and tons of maze potential.

Guess I need to watch Insidious then.

Yes sir! I highly recommend! I can't believe you missed it! Who are you, John Murdy?!?!?! :P

  6. The only movie house i wouldn't mind seeing is Insidious. Ever since i saw it last April i always thought it would make an awesome house. They can start the house with the first house the people moved into, then midway you transition to the second house and you end in the Further.

^^^Agree 100%. Imagine walking through that seance scene. I'm all for original content but one or two movie-based houses are a nice change and Insidious would be fantastic!

  7. Also, am I the only one who isn't really that excited about turning Insidious into a haunted house?

    Yes. ;)

I hadn't thought of AHS but that certainly has potential. There are plenty of ghosts to choose from. However, most of them are just human-looking. Hmmmm. Regardless, if you're a horror fan, you need to watch that show NOW. It was the best new show of the year. Awesome stuff!

As always, I would like a balance of licensed houses and original content.

  8. Well in 2000 they had what was called a "haunted attraction" in Kongfontation.

It was called Nightmare Creatures II (which in itself is odd because I don't remember Nightmare Creatures I and can't find any record of it).

Anyway, it was originally supposed to have both a tram ride and a walk through on the floor of Kong. However the tram never happened. What we got was a weird hybrid. It wasn't a house as it had no rooms or divisions. It was a huge wide path like a street but it was in a building. So I label it an indoor scarezone :).

Incidentally if you would like to read a review of HHN X here is one I found whilst looking for the review. Many things I had forgot.

Ahhhhhh!!!! I wonderd if that was what you were referring to. 2000 was my first year and I remember being blown away by getting to walk through Kong. It was awesome! And so full of fog you couldn't see more than a couple feet in front of you. I was disappointed that they never did it again.

Thanks for the link to the review! I'm reading it now but the first line about the ticket costing $20 is depressing...

Incidentally, I believe I heard that "Nightmare Creatures II" was the name of a video game.

Nightmare Creatures II was actually a video game-based scarezone. It was based on the video game that came out back then and also had a scarezone at HHN Hollywood the same year before it went on hiatus.

Sorry... guess I should have read the rest of the replies first. Thanks Freak!

  9. And finally, how about letting the Terror Tram close for a couple of years? Use the budget for an extra house or something, and make people miss it. Much better than an a freakin' 7th year of chainsaws in Whoville and zombies in WOTW, dontcha think?

    AMEN TO THAT!!!!

As for less movie-themed offerings next year? I'm not holding my breath considering the survey was a huge laundry list of movies, TV shows, and celebrities. But I'm really hoping that Murdy learned something from La Llorona last year. Quality beats brand recognition!

  10. Sorry i know this part has nothing to do with anything, ill post my top 10 and worst 5 after this, but what was fear factor like? No videos i can find or pictures :/ and fear factor is and has been my favorite show since it came out so i would like to hear details! haha thank you!

Happy to add some detail about Fear Factor in 2002. The concept for the house was solid. The idea was for it to be pitch black and you have to feel your way through it while encountering all the things we fear: snakes, bugs, angry dogs, etc. It was all tactile with a couple small lit areas that show what you're supposed to be encountering (i.e. someone with spiders crawling on them). So if it had been kept this way where you had to feel your way through the dark, it could have been unique and cool.

The issue was, after the first day or two of the event, the house would get all clogged up from guests moving too slowly (or not at all) because of the dark. So they hastily threw lighting in ALL of the rooms. Now you could see all of the cheap props that were never meant to be seen. Like the fishing lures on ropes meant to be bugs and worms, or the mattress pads behind chain link that were supposed to be rabid dogs. All of the sudden there was nothing scary at all about the house. It was just BAD! A good conceptual idea that wasd ruined by the realities of operations.

You can see what they had in mind here:

  11. i went through twice, both were excellent walkthroughs. i guess timing is everything. like how i went through Hollow'd past without seeing a single SA then did it again another day and saw all of them. but i thought that house relied the least on timing.

how you can think any house last year was worse than zombiegeddon is beyond me though :P

For the first half on ZG, I would agree. But I actually got quite a few scares from the middle through the end. Especially the "freezer room". I got no scares in Catacombs and it seeemed like they had only one possible costume for every SA: Plague Doctor, which lost it's effect after the first dozen or so. Also, having been an avid reader of MAD magazine as a kid, I couldn't be scared of them in the first place.

I'm aware I am in the minority on this. And it's cool. That's why we get 8 houses a year. :)

  12. someone didn't like 2008 very much :P. but i agree. i rank 08 as my least favorite year (05-11). i understand everyone loved 08 for it's incredible backstory, but i prefer great houses over great story. look at 2011 for example. the theming was not very good and Luck was barely present, but all of the houses were incredible.

^^^ I absolutely agree with everything you just said.

  13. Wow!!! Incredibly in-depth review/recap. Great read. Thanks for helping keep me occupied at work after lunch

    A few things:

-These are some of the most detailed walk-throughs I've ever read on this site. It was like reliving the houses and helped me remember some details I had forgotten.

-Agreed that they really knocked it out of the park in terns of houses in Orlando this year. They all ranged from good (The Thing, In Between) to great (Nightengales, Bloodengutz) to FREAKING AMAZING (Winter's Night, Nevermore, Forsaken).

-Amen about ticket differences this year. I love the options in FL and definitely worth the $$$.

-I would slightly disagree about a more respectful audience here in CA. I think we have just as many jackasses here as in FL. It's just that they can't blame the booze here. (Btw- I LOVE the specialty drink down there)

-I got a souvenir blinking cup when I went at the end of the month. Maybe they were sold out or hadn't come in when you went? That stinks.

-I understand your point about the distance between houses and entrances and exits in FL. And if you are going to bounce around to houses, out of order, it can be exhausting. But someone once taught me a great trick for HHN Orlando. Start your night by making the Parade building house your first (The Forsaken this year). Then every house will exit and the entrance of the next house (Forsaken exited at In Between, In Betweem exited at Nevermore, Nevermore exited close to Saws and Steam, etc.). It works great and is a good way to hit them all one after another.

-There indeed was a fried peanut butter and banana sandwich at the food carts across from Twister!!! I don't do bananas but my sister survived it.

Thanks again for writing this up. Well done! Sigh... I miss Halloween... :)

  14. I don't see them doing the event in only IOA again anytime soon. Seuss and Potter would make for too much dead space (if it's true they can't use HP for HHN), I think. I know they've been toying with the idea of combining the 2 parks again like they did in 04 for the past couple years so I wouldn't rule it out. Of course, the simplest answer would be to just find one more venue for the lost house at Jaws. Considering they have options with the soundstages, Herc/Xena, Parade building, or another sprung tent, that would seem most likely. :)
