  1. I've heard rumors that the arch stuff went up last night. Someone get over there now! B)

You can find the images on Rumors' construction thread. No idea if I'm allowed to link to them so I'll refrain from doing so, you all know where to look.

To those wanting description: It's most similar to 2008's setup. The screen is back (of course!) and is currently showing the blue roulette lights with proclamations of HHN's greatness & Stay'n'Scream tickets. The screen is the same size of last year's.

There are four poster-boards atop the arches, two on either side - the closest to the screen are an identical card with an image of Lady Luck. The further two cards are also identical, with the Halloween Horror Nights 21 logo. The "demon" version of Luck is nowhere to be seen - we'll probably see her in the big screen video!

  2. To the unaware - I did some snooping around on the existing hoodies/sweatshirts on Universal's online shop - the most expensive hoodie they have is a Gryffindor Harry Potter zipdown with considerably more detail and color than the shown HHN hoodie. This hoodie retails for $53. As such, I expect the HHN hoodie to cost approximately $50 (give or take a couple of bucks) - it won't get as high as $60 unless they want to lose money, as that's simple price gauging. I can't imagine they'd sell an HHN hoodie for more than a Potter hoodie...

  3. I'm sure there will be a discount given to annual pass holders. And seeing how I am pretty likely to buy a hoodie, I'll take any discount I can get.

Preferred annual passholders get a 10% discount on all merchandise sold in the parks with the exception of some of the specialty shops at Lost Continent - I think Premiere passholders get 15%. In my case (as a Preferred passholder), assuming the hoodie is $50 (and basing off the pricing of their other hoodies, it will be), we'll get a $5 discount. Not too shabby!

  4. I love it. Much better than the past two years IMO (Ripped always felt like a copout to me, and XX's didn't even make sense.) Great detail work, the note is creepy & consistent with Luck's character, and I love how the playing card is your ticket of admission to the press event (right?)

Cool stuff, thanks for sharing mz!

  5. My friend called the "Fortuna" backstory the moment I mentioned that our icon was going to be some sort of "Lady Luck" type character (he's big on mythology). I hope we get a little more (and it sounds like we will), but I like the direction. It sounds like they're going to justify her existence and make her presence make far more sense, something that wasn't really done with FEAR.

Oh and that Facebook page is 99% a fan page as Legacy noted.

  6. Roofs? Rooofs! No roooooooffffsss? Come on people how often do you go threw the houses looking at the cieling? I could see if you were upset about there being no floors, but roofs? Who gives a flying dutchmen?

I do, thanks. It kills the immersion to look up and find you're just in a big warehouse. The black cloths strewn about or the grating weren't anything fancy but they were effective in preserving the illusion. Besides, many effects actually call for you to look up (see the Stygian Witches scene in Hades).

I know it's apparently now a fire code thing, but you'd think Universal could find a way to work around that. Disney seems to get away with it all the time (Reedy Creek benefits notwithstanding.)

  7. So I was one of the 21 chosen for the tour. I can confirm that there are scenes in the fort and on the ship and with both. There are NOT roofs and some of the effects theyre pulling off this year are fantastic! The forsaken characters do look alot like the ghosts from john carpenters the fog but its still pretty amazing! The mentioned Courtyard scenes is astounding. A HUGE room. the whole place just opens up. its great. Cant wait to see it full running next week with scaractors

    Wait, so... no roofs? :(

  8. I know it's been brought up before, but my curiosity as to why it happens has suddenly been sparked. If you don't know what I'm talking about, here's some examples...

    The Hallow/The Skoolhouse = Trick 'r Treat

Dungeon of Terror = House of 1000 Corpses

    Run = Hostel

(does Cold Blind Terror count as a generalization of The Thing?)

They take the theme of a popular movie, and then make it generic. Personally, I like the concept of that.

But it happens really often. Sometimes multiple houses each year. Does anyone know why it happens so often? I'm just curious, thinking about rights and stuff like that. I mean, Universal is a movie studio. You would think they had all the rights they wanted.

Also, if you know of more examples to add to that list, feel free to post them. I had more, but then forgot them. :P

    - Doc

I prefer to think of them more like tributes. There are three issues with abandoning the "generalization" approach and using a license: one, it costs money. BIG money for the big licenses. Freddy, Jason, Leatherface, SAW, & even Bloody Mary cost a relative fortune to license. Two, fans balk at them - they want "originality," even if it is as generalized as you claim. Three, it's much more interesting and creatively challenging to let the designer create his/her own sets & characters (even if inspired in part by a film) rather than stick to the strict guidelines of a license owner. Apparently A&D had to have all of the NLC house designs approved by Newline again and again - while it leads to a lovely result, it does stifle creativity. The occasional "true" movie house can be great - it's a nice change of pace, it's often current, and they're typically beautifully designed as well as scary (Dead Silence, Wolfman, any of the NLC houses, The Thing [hopefully old&new], Doomsday, etc.).

So I guess I don't mind the generalizations, so to speak. After all, if A&D couldn't tackle any theme addressed in a movie - we wouldn't have a lot of horror themes left, would we?

  9. I have a couple of questions if anyone here has some insight:

I'm coming from out of town and getting a Rush of Fear ticket and attending Oct 6th and 8th.

-First, Is that enough to be able to do and see all the houses and shows? Including rides too?

-Second, I know they do early access for the Stay and Scream option. I was planning on going to IOA on the 6th. Do you get early access with a Rush of Fear ticket if you are at IOA?

If you have a plan, I'd say you'll be fine. Remember that only Simpsons, Men in Black, Jaws, Mummy, and (maybe?) Rockit are open during HHN. I'd give the houses & zones priority over rides since it's HHN, but it's of course up to you. Hit the houses right when the park opens and nail a few as the park closes - lines are short then.

As for the Stay and Scream - I'm not sure it works if you're at Islands of Adventure. They used to do that, no idea if they do these days. You might call Universal's ticket office and see.

  10. From everything I heard about this zone from rehearsals? Yeah... not looking too good...

Wow, there were already rehearsals here? Since the moving walls are integral to the zone, I'd hazard that what you see is what you get, people. This isn't really a maze. I knew I got too much of a Cold Blind Terror vibe from this...

  11. So, is construction completed for this zone? It... isn't looking good folks. Maybe five total move-able walls. Some "maze..."

Knew it wasn't a good idea to get too excited about this... but who knows, they may still surprise us...

  12. I would only want it to happen if it DIDN'T take the place of an existing house (meaning there would be 9 total houses each year). In addition, the extreme house could not push one of the more elaborate regular mazes (parade building or sound stages) into a lesser venue to make room for the up charge house.

Then, the up charge house must have a reasonable price. No more than $30 for one group - $40 is ridiculous and I wouldn't pay it, even if it was split among 4 friends or whatever on principle. Like the first year of Alone, a reward for completing it "alone" would be a necessity - even if it's just a photo print, a shirt, or a pin.

To add icing to the cake, they could bundle it with Frequent Fear Pass. Pay a little extra with your FFP and get a visit to the up charge house. Pay a little more extra, get a visit to the up charge house each night you go (if you reserve a date in advance.)

    Or something like that.

  13. Forgot to mention these in my wish list - a nice, super-nice coffee table book with lots of concept art, blueprints, and high-res photography, and/or a new documentary. I hate having to show the 2002 doc to the uninformed - it makes the event look a little lame at this point (I feel Screamhouse is really the only house that holds up to today's standards.)

  14. New update, red and blue!

Not quite - Saws'n'Steam (RED) and Winter's Night (CYAN) - Poe is "blue" and hasn't gotten its game yet.

There are of course back story tables accompanying each house. Winter's Night's newspaper article may hold the answer to what "The House" actually is... and that "spinster" sounds awfully suspicious. Hasn't Universal PR stated several times now that Lady Luck craves giving you a choice?

  15. I feel like this post was missed.

Ditto. I have a lot of respect for the military, but I really think we've made this into a huge production when it's only an issue for a select few. You know what this house is about. You know there may be some ambiant gun or mortar fire. If you aren't 100% you can't handle it, don't do it. Scare actor injury is a necessary evil of this event - it's going to happen in all of the houses this year, war related or not.

Can we please use this thread for actual discussion about the house, especially since we have a LOT of new info from the site that hasn't even been mentioned, and if anything have a dedicated thread for the PTSD talk?

  16. I have heard rumors, not yet substantiated that part of this scarezone may be indoors.

I wondered if the Roulette Wheel room would be able to be visited - I bet it would fit in some of the remaining Naazarman facades. Hopefully it isn't just a glorified photo op.
