Okay is there reason people are saying Murdy is leaving or is it another “I didn’t like this year so it must be his last year” schtick we been pull since 2011?
Honestly I don’t believe it’s 100% Murdy fault this year was not great.
Budget is not Murdy’s job he is a creative director he just deals with the money he is given.
Construction years kinda always a buzzkill for the event. But that can’t be helped.
Its way too late to hop off the ip train for both parks I’m sorry but like death and taxes it’s unavoidable plus just cuz Orlando had originals does not mean we are changing anything or it would of happened years ago.
In my opinion these are the things that need to be addressed
Jabawokkeez- I know I hate on them but in all seriousness they need to go... why? ever noticed how much they push them down our throats on social media, maps, billboards? Hell they basically yell at your face up until 15 minutes into the show that seats are available. Why do they receive top billing? Because a good chunk of HHN budget goes to them. Unlike Bill and ted, Rocky Horror or even Academy of villains they are a Vegas act. Also unlike most shows HHNH has done they do not have alternate cast the same guys play every night roughly 5 or so shows. That’s impressive but not cheap. I have friends at Uni and the rumors are they take a good percentage of budget.
Scarezones- I get why the lower lot and London and French street zone have been gone in the past but what I noticed this time was there was absolutely zero reason for the SZ to not be present anymore. The lower lot scarezone was cut in 2015 because of The Walking Dead maze being placed in the Transformers extended queue So it would made a bad cluster but a maze has not been there since and up stairs last year they were afraid the Walking Dead attraction would spill into London but was not case from what I saw at least.
Holding onto to the past- this is Uni’s problem when they are in a pinch they rely on past success to save them. Which is why this year was an accidental anniversary year.

Anyone know why Hollywood doesn't do more original themes like Orlando does?
Murdy says he perfers Hollywood doing IP being a studio themed theme park since Orlando was trucking since the 90s they didn’t really rebrand themselves even though it’s about 50/50 now Hollywood came back with the second year being the year that Uni pulled the big 3 or “Titans” as they are now called contract with New Line Cinema so murdy just decided on making Bringing horror movies to life being Hollywood’s gimmick

The only thing about IT that might prevent it from coming is the sequel comes out in 2019; it all depends on if John wants to do it 2 years in a row.
True.... but if hopefully the hype train is strong enough i mean look at walking dead hype was so strong it became part of the park lol

- Original Maze/ Chupacabra?
That's my tid bit of thoughts.
Even if just a SZ they need to do chupacabra something hell any cryptid
also so is Blumhouse doing the new Halloween?
So here we go on scare zones
we need SZ back big time at least on the lower lot and French street
also a Bigfoot scarezone would be badass

Ugh I missed 2011 and I really wanna see The Thing as a maze. Such a good property, I’m surprised the original version hasn’t been adapted yet as it fits the “dark horse” or “classic maze” that every year seems to have
It was a good maze it’s sad how much gp shitted on it even the YouTube videos don’t do it justice

10. Evil Dead: Book of The Dead
9. The Thing 2011
8. Krampus
7. Alice Cooper Goes To Hell
6. American Werewolf In London
5. Welcome To Silent Hill
4. La Llerona
3. Friday 13th: Camp Blood
2. Insidious: into the Further
1.Texas Chainsaw Massacre: Back In Business
ive been going since 06 when I was 16 to now but 2007 is what made me stick with HHN

I’m so glad he finally got The Shining, it was such a good maze.
Idk after the whole Bill and Ted thing I feel like Hollywood’s been more conservative. Asylum is the most highly requested season of AHS for Horror Nights and if they don’t do it, it leaves us with Cult and Coven. Coven could be a good maze, but Murdy sounds like he reallllyyy wants to do Asylum
It was more a liberal reason for Bill and Ted. Vice; the website that posted the original article is SUPER liberal and the reason is the joke in question was homophobic. Plus again in last year they did Purge election year which is anti-conservative in way and they did have a skeleton trump on New York street. I can see Asylum maze and cult terror tram
3 hours ago, themazethinker said:murdy actually said this in a old archived page right here about the thing https://web.archive.org/web/20110131173608/http://www.themeparkadventure.com:80/murdy09.htm
' The Thing has amazing creature effects throughout it - that would be extremely hard and frankly, very expensive to replicate for a maze. That is the biggest idea killer as far as The Thing goes. The creatures used in the film only had to work and hold up for a couple of shots as the camera caught them on film forever. At HHN, props have to be built to work over and over again without fail; thousands of times. That poses a very real issue when design teams ponder what can and cannot be feasible and realistic from their end. To do The Thing the way Murdy would want it done would come with substantial cost to Universal. And while Murdy acknowledges that their sister park in Orlando did do a Thing maze, it is clear that the way he would want it done here in California - isn't practical at this point in time. '
Uuhhhh you do know Murdy did do a thing Maze here in California right?
The reason I said don’t count on the thing is the General public kinda shitted all over when Murdy did it. Either not knowing what the thing was, hating the prequel or the fact that at time people only wanted Freddy, Jason, or Saw repeated over and over could of been the reason but the maze was awesome in my opinion also I just realized how old I’m getting this was 2011 ahhhhhhh

For HHN Orlando:
- AHS: Cult in Sprung 1
- The Conjuring in SS21
- IT in SS21
- Blumhouse’s Halloween in either Parade Building(if it’s still there with SNW under construction) or Sprung 2
- Twin Peaks: SS22
- Requel of Original house in SS24
- New Original house or Stranger Things in SS24
- Original in MIB Tent
- Original in a possible new house location if the Parade Building closes
For HHN Hollywood:
- AHS: Asylum in FDTD Area
- IT in JP Queue
- The Conjuring in Waterworld Queue
- Trick R Treat or The Strangers in Metro Sets
- Blumhouse’s Halloween in Parisian Courtyard
- Twin Peaks in Mummy Queue
- The Thing or Stranger Things in 747 Queue
- The Walking Dead: TWDA
Differences & Notes On Both events:
(1) AHS: I see Hollywood getting Asylum due to next year most likely being a fan service year. Considering the political backdrop of Cult I don’t see Hollywood ever touching it.
(2) Trick R Treat: I see Hollywood getting this as a potential exclusive due to the success of Orlando’s scarezone(and how requested it is). If Trick R Treat doesn’t come I think Hollywood will get The Strangers
(3) The “Mega House” in Orlando: Unless they do all 7 seasons of AHS in one, I don’t see a mega house next year for HHN 28. They could do what they did in HHN23 and fit 2 houses into SS21, which I see being IT & The Conjuring.
(4) Originals: I see Orlando revisiting an old Original, which I think will be either the Orfanage, Catacombs, or Nightingales.
(5) The Thing is a strong possibility as the “classic” house for next year, but Twin Peaks is heavily rumored. Maybe both get Twin Peaks but one gets Thing as an exclusive?
The only thing is idk about the strangers Universal does not have the rights anymore outside a cameo if we do a horror movie themed SZ I don’t we will see them
also the thing i wouldn’t count while murdy is around things that are low rated the year that they represented he tends to never go back so Silent Hill, scream, The Thing, etc cuz they were not the number 1 spot they are in limbo. Silent Hill was the reason we didn’t do Resident Evil when Orlando did but if we did a classic maze a year would be cool
Also political stuff won’t stop Cult here in LA if it didn’t stop the purge it’s not gonna stop Cult
-
I kinda hope they refrain from any repeats as that kinda killed the mood this year so I hope they don’t do the thing again but the fly would be interesting but who knows
-
I know it’s early but with Halloween Tuesday and the last weekend following I figured on top of the weakest year of HHNH we can start this discussion.
so I’ll start with the ip’s I want to see and then overall suggestions also let’s be realistic here lol.
ips-
No brainers-
Stranger Things- huge hit l, second season is getting great reviews. Great environments and effects can be utilized and ironically a black hallway would actually make sense in this one ( though not more twice tops).
It- seems like Stephen King is over his issues with haunted attractions so would be great to see this used.
The Conjuring-if we get IT we can get a package deal from WB.
AHS: Cult if one has to return might as well be AHS and this season is pretty good hell it could even be a good terror tram.
maybes
(?) Happy Death Day- another surprise hit I didn’t go through Blumhouse or seen the movie so I don’t know what could be used but if it’s great as people say I’m sure it can be a great maze (I may change my my thought after I see the movie so take this as a hypothetical for now)
New Mutants- doing a super hero movie as a horror movie is a fresh take and hell if it turns out good it may make for a fresh take on a maze
The Evil Within-would like to see one more jab at a video game maze and I’m one who honestly liked Silent Hill Maze so if we’re are not gonna get Resident Evil this would be a great one

I think I heard Rob zombies voice

Not sure if it was always a thing, but good lord is Horror Nights terrible with atmosphere. Wish they had more decor around the park (and I don't mean more scare zones, just some more festivity in general).
It’s two things construction and Walking dead attraction
the construction shortens the range of how far the front scare zone can reach
but the biggest issue is the walking dead attraction it straight up kills two scare zones and The Despicable Me ride. When turning House of horrors into TWD they flipped the queue/entrance to where the exit used to be last year they claimed the queue would block traffic if it ever did I haven’t seen it but it cuts a good quarter of the Park off So no scare zones make them feel like they don’t need to add atmosphere or decor
-
I agree with most hear and have heard from friends and co workers that this year was super weak I’m giving the benefit of the doubt of budget and construction but I agree they might need to really win back their spot as the top over the next few years

Dang, you missed 3 whole mazes. I don't know, but Insidious was pretty dang good and the first half is nothing like the other mazes, IMO. You also missed AHS, which is another one of the best of the year. I think your opinion of this year would be higher if you at least went through those two. Blumhouse was garbage but you might've appreciated the Sinister bit. I recommend you go back and try to hit everything, I feel it's an unfair assessment to only do half of the mazes and you didn't even do the good half haha
I think saw just made me really irritated with the repeats. I really wanted to do AHS but it climbed to 75 min way too fast but it still felt the bad out weighed the good I would want to try again but with tickets at almost 100 bucks forget about it or maybe I’m just comparing it too much to last year idk haha
-
Okay so although I’ve been missing a while this year I want chime in this year and due to state of the event this year I’m not gonna go over my experience to the tee like normal I’ll give my bullet points before I get into the event. Due to a problem with a buddy getting out of work in time and and accidents on the 101 got there exactly at normal opening 7:00. Overall had fun but this year was a let down. 21 and over zones plus more security though was a breath of fresh air nice to see them put the mature back into a mature event.
In order
Hell-o-ween
was a cool idea and character design unfortunately it suffered from the construction would like to see the scare actors have room and maybe the fire towers back. Hopefully it’s gets its shot to shine next year.
Environment- N/A
Talent-10/10
Scares-7/10
Grade: A-
Toxic Tunnle-
would not count this as a SZ but it’s always great ironically it had environment and a story that fit but felt like the planets aligning and might not happen again although like always the scare actors are what made it
environment-6/10
talent-10/10
Scares-10/10
Grade: B
urben inferno-
Metro SZ are normally pretty great but it was totally under staffed when I went through I know from videos there were supposed to be victims too but only saw 2 demons plus the stilt walkers so I feel I can’t rate this fare
Ash vs Evil Dead- honestly was really fun got a few scares in the sheet maze but the black walls man can’t get over that the few environments were great but feel like a lot of great scenes were lost due to the black wall ash on one side deadite on other side bs. Honestly felt like they only did half the maze and gave up would loved to see the demon summoned into the occult store, the diner massacre or even the bunker but oh well hopefully it happens again but with more detail and stuff from season 2 and 3 that deadite mascot from the season 3 ads looks badass. Also don’t know why Murdy thinks Ash SA have to look exactly like Bruce Campbell I mean those mask were terrible
enviroment- 6/10
Scares-7/10
Talent-8/10
Design-5/10
grade: C+
Saw: Games of Jigsaw
I get a lot more people go now that didn’t in 09 and 10 but still as long as I’ve been going to HHN and as someone who knows most of the scare tactics I have never felt like I saw everything coming like i did with this maze. Also the cast didn’t seem as into it as previous installments this really did feel like old knotts scary farm.
enviroment- 6/10
Scares-3/10
talent-3/10 (at least that cast)
design-0/10 only because beside the one new room it was a carbon copy
Grade:F
Had to skip AHS due to wait time
The Shinning-
a hour wait was worth it this had to been my favorite maze this year nothing too out of the ordinary but was great the attention to detail was great (the carpet) and how cold the ending scene was added to the environment and for as much as I shitted on the Bruce mask in Evil Dead the jack mask were not too bad I don’t know how we got a king property but hopefully we can get more. Although like most said this was more a show maze
Environment- 9/10
Scares-7/10
Talent-8/10
Design- 9/10
Grade-B+
Insidious:Further something
Honestly skipped it saw the video and like saw was almost a carbon copy so was no loss.
Titans of Terror Tram-
besides the name and dvd promotion why was this done? And why was the path cut in half felt pointless to try to include honestly missed Blumhouse for it and I regret it that being said say was great glad to see speaking characters again. Again saw a lot of the gags before but the arrow targets was a nice touch and glad we got and ending video again wish they would do it more even if it’s the same mummy tunnel gag
tram: F
Talent: A+
Titans of Terror- again recycled gag but great cast it hit my soft spot for Freddy and Jason but that’s about it those one of my favorite facades.
Environment- 7/10
Scares-7/10
Talent-9/10
Design-7/10
Grade: B
Overall this was a weak year with only 2 new mazes it didn’t feel worth the price hike plus bring back Jabba and the wookies was insult to injury I feel I could of skipped this year tbh
my advice ice for next year let’s wipe the slate clean at least 80%
would like to see Ash vs evil dead get a season 3-2 maze and get a better treatment and American Horror Story Cult has a lot of potential would love to see it at the Terror Tram fits perfectly.
For New Stranger things is a hit and with 2 seasons now has enough to pull from.
If we got shinning why can’t we get “It”
Also I hope murdy give Video game mazes another shot because the Evil within needs its shit to shine it almost got through with the first game the second us out so why not?
and with Death Day being a hit would be cool as it’s own maze

Does anyone have a pic of this years sipper?

Definitely let it go. I understand it's inclusion the first year, as they could've been buying time to figure out how to replace B&T more fittingly. The second year, I'll give it a pass. This year, they should've figured something out, at the very least also had the farewell tour for B&T. Jabba is cool and all, but it's a VERY odd choice for Horror Nights and I completely understand if a dance crew isn't everyone's cup of a tea. Thematically, it feels so wrong during HHN. We need to get back to a pop culture send up staple that makes an audience laugh and cheer. Comedy is the perfect bedfellow with horror (Scream, Chucky, Freddy, and It all prove that). Maybe next year, Hollywood will borrow whatever idea Orlando uses to replace B&T with. Or I at least hope so. I'm even open to something more along the lines of a Purge Stunt Show. I'd love to see a Special Effects Stages: Horror Edition. HHN History. An improv troupe. A magic show. The return of Beetlejuice. With such heavy lines, even 2 or 3 of these ideas would be great.
Very well put also It’s very odd why Uni defends on social media and rigs the survey to only say nice things about them (read my review for 2015) I get why they avoid bill and ted like a f’en plague but come on at least admit it’s polerizing even a lot of kids 13-20 don’t agree I mean trade for AOV at least. But anyways great review as always
-
As someone who actually likes Jabbawokeez do you feel it's time to let it go? Or do you feel it can still be milked?
-
Good to know I might just skip the lanyard this Orlando lanyard looked pretty cool hoping ours would be too
-
What's on the lanyard? Can't see.

I got the Titans of Terror Tram shirt, Come Play With Us shirt, The Best Nightmares Never End shirt and The Come Play With Us Poster. Just know the shirts fit kind of small. I bought all the shirts XXL cause I like shirts a little baggy on me but these shirts fit me pretty good as in they actually fitted but weren't actually any sort of baggy. I bought a XL Titans of Terror 2016 shirt last year and I don't like the way it fits. It fits me, I still wear it and I like it but it doesn't fit the way I would want it to fit.
I totally get you lol I think outside of 08 and 07 all the shirts I get fit weird and I can't explain it but XL feels odd ironically I got a size smaller cuz it was all they had left and it fits perfect
-
Food looks soooooo good
-
I feel this year was phoned in tbh but ehh I'm still gonna have fun but I can see why a lot of veterans might hate it since it seems to be only 15% new material a lot of the gags are reused on the repeats (Jason bed kill, snake Freddy, most anything with leather face, 95% of saw lol I think only one scene is from the new movie) ect. It's no biggie outside of saw since I'm a fan of insidious (except darth Maul lol) Purge and The big three but I can see people being annoyed hopefully next year is brand spanking new

Has you actually seen beer being served at HHN Hollywood this year? The USH FAQ for HHN clearly state:
Is alcohol served at the event?
Alcohol will not be served nor permitted at Universal Studios Hollywood during Halloween Horror Nights.
A frequent customer at my store is an Uni employee (she works foods) you can get beer in duff garden BUT it's highly controlled it's a 2 drink maximum per guest and you can't leave duff gardens while drinking
anyways back guys just a lot of changes in life finishing school and working 24:7, plus family stuff but won't be bore you with the details but wanted to be back for the season so how's everyone
Grind Lives!!!! Haunt Season 2021 Retrospective
in General Halloween Horror Nights - Hollywood
Posted
Que Tales from the krypt intro…… Grind comes out of coffin
50,000 years will give you such a creak in the neck
Hey guys if your still around good to see the forums at least somewhat alive-ish on the Hollywood side. Sorry for the extremely long hiatus life happens and I needed a break to be honest from the forums but I’m back and I feel like speculating and discussing my favorite event once again! I started on this forum as a teen and now a man busting into his 30s and a father no less but I’m always there waiting on any info on the next Haunt season.
But enough about this old timer let talk Haunt
First off man has the California Haunt fan crowd grown and I’m happy to see where it is, it went from just us 5 to 9 dudes on the internet and a hand full of annoying kids breaking into closed areas (remember the saw twins?) in the shadow of the amazing Orlando community and now man so many talented people making videos about news and speculations and construction updates and even interviews with Murdy himself. I remember when we had to wait for freak to make out to park to take pictures cuz he was the only one with a annual pass now these guys are there day 1 it’s crazy wish I would of thought about doing this back In the day. So as a community especially outside these forums it’s cool to see the growth from 9 dudes complaining about Zs in scare zone names besides Sharpproductions who’s always been a mainstay I also recommend FiveFires and TLV Media.
Ok Let’s start by saying in 2019 I returned to Knotts and DAMN in my honest opinion they are the kings once again of haunt they’re set designs are on an amazing level that I don’t think I ever remember them being from my child hood, Mesmer this year and Origins last year were top tier mazes and man I love how aggressive street actors are like old school HHN scare Actors you know before they kept getting sued. Besides Scary Farm haunts are popping up all over so cal we even have a Howl-o-scream. This year of our lord 2021 I was able to make it out to Orlando HHN the holy land for the first time (I’ll do a trip report soon if anybody is interested) and as someone followed the even t since sweet 16 but has never went this was a life changing experience and I nerded out big time I was my groups tour guide pointing out Easter eggs and lore my GF even joked that she heard the RIP tour guid telling the group exactly same theme I told my group but for free. Anyways this year Halloween was back, and everyone stepped it up even Disneyland‘s Oogie Bash hit spooky with a zombie cap (besides Horror I’m also a huge comic and MCU nerd and also loved Marvel Zombies so this made me giddy) and then there was HHN Hollywood….
I'm gonna get this out before hand any criticism I have is out of love of the event and creative team and talent and universal themselves. Also while I will share my opinions I’ll try to stay unbiased and realistic as much as I can. On one more prerequisite note I want to acknowledge this year was and uphill battle for the HHN team, No one knew if the event was gonna happen to begin with (I don’t want get to much into covid but it is the elephant in the room), and just Orlando it did seem like they had a concrete plan in place but unlike Orlando things seem to fall apart in Hollywood. There was to be a Billie Eillish colab (not themed) Maze but she found Jesus (joke) so she pulled out understandably she wanted to change her dark and broody image since this was supposed to be both coast I’m 99.9% sure this became the TCM maze at both events. This isn’t new to us in Hollywood as TCM has been replacement maze before (it’s easy sets and easy scares) . My theory is for some unknown reason we were also to have a Beetlejuice maze in the soundstage I know in 2020 Orlando merch pop up advertising Beetlejuice at both HHN if I’m not mistaken while I don’t think this has anything to do with WB as they do have a good relationship with HHN and we have had the most ip mazes from them plus since it didn’t get pulled from Orlando the only other reason I can see WB putting the kabosh on the ghost with the most would of been Horror Made Here but considering they didn’t do it this year I doubt it my guess it was budget it is kinda an effects heavy property to do. The. There is the biggest mystery why Halloween 3 turned into Halloween 4 which is bizarre considering Halloween 3 is a Universal movie my only theory is maybe they wanted to save it for a better year. So as for the repeating stuff it is what it is I don’t blame them its a weird time but let talk about stuff that is in their control.
I want to start off by acknowledging the good and improvement the event has made,. Merch! Omg the merch game was at its peak this year they even offered pull over hoodies this year I’m a sucker for hoodies the variety of shirts it’s cool to see them do maze specific shirts and not just a generic ip shirt that you could get at Hot Topic example the haunting of Hill house was for the maze specifically not just the show also the larger variety of event shirts is great… words can’t describe how bummed I am I missed out on that spirit jersey hope it comes back next year. Food choices I’m glad they have more HHN specific foods and one huge thing is I’m glad they are embracing the “Adult Event” aspect again with the lounges, im not a hey kid get off my lawn guy but it does feel good to have a place to go after paying about $100 bucks and not have to deal with teens not that I hate kids being there but after spending 40 mins in line behind a group of them you do need a mental break and a drink but that’s true if some adults at HHN too.
end of part 1 part 2 coming soon
