Well now I feel like I should have gone with GA instead of FoL. Oh well.

Where are we supposed to wait for the opening ceremony this year once we're inside the park?

They had directed me to the Wizarding World entry area, but you have to keep telling them that’s what you want, otherwise they’ll push you to the backlot.

*ik it's much too early to speculate 2018 but we already know most of the lineup*

    If I had to guess...

    The Conjuring: Waterworld

    Halloween: PC

    It: JP Queue

The Thing(based on or original): 747 Queue

    Predator: Metro Sets

    Twin Peaks: Mummy Queue

    TWD Attraction

    AHS: Asylum: FDTD Area

I'd be pretty down if that were it! And with the massive surge of 'Twin Peaks' attention that came with the newest (and final) season, it has that pop culture presence Murdy wants in an IP ('Twin Peaks' has always loomed in pop culture, but it seems to have blown up this past Summer thanks to Showtime).

Alien would be a great maze, hugeeeee budget though.

They could probably pull it off. Looks like 'The Shining' is going through extreme lengths to replicate the movie exactly, down to the font of the numbers on the door.

I'm really hoping Murdy takes advantage of The new Predator movie being released next year and making a Predator maze next year. He can easily reuse the props from The AvP mazes.

I finally watched IT yesterday and I'm really bummed out it's not a maze this year. It would of been perfect to bring it this year cause of the movie's super high popularity so far, the release date being a week before HHN starts and how good reviews it has.

I'm finally back home and I'll post pics/vids I got at the park today in a bit.

'It' has the biggest horror opening ever, as well as the biggest 'R' rates opening since 'Deadpool', and has already earned back its budget; not to mention that on Thursday alone it earned more than 'The Dark Tower' did its whole theatrical run. A stellar rating on Rotten Tomatoes and nothing but praise. I feel like something could have been done with WB to get it to HHN, and it sounds like Murdy fought hard to get it. Here's hoping it'll headline next year's event because I'd hate for it to become a mashup house like 'Insidious: Into the Further'. 'It' has more than enough material to cover a full maze and still come back 2019 for the sequel.

I was was also hoping 'Covenant' would come this year with some old 'AvP' props to save budget, but I guess it got eased out. Here's hoping 'Predator' can make an appearance next year with (here's a long shot) the classic 'Alien' taking the 'Exorcist'/'Shining' spot as the slow burn classic horror maze.

It's probably gonna come next year and they'll market it as "a living trailer". Next year should be verrry interesting when it comes to the IP's since it might be a ton of new ones(side note but if It comes AHS Cult might not since they're similar; we might finally get Asylum). Anyways yeah It is made for HHN and needs to come asap

Next year should be interesting being that we get a new 'Halloween' movie, 'It' can finally come to HHN (and have more justice done than the Neibolt St Experience did), a new 'Predator' movie, a 'Green Inferno' sequel (the first could have been a maze), and apparently a 'Slenderman' movie (though the hype for him has died so much I think the film will fail, but the setting/various creatures of the mythology has potential for a maze).

Also wonder if it'll become a 'thing' to have one classic horror film at the event now.

i was so sure we were gonna get one today. Maybe tomorrow? John said on twitter we should expect it by the end of the week, but hes said that before and it never came sooooo

I just wonder what the hold up is. Usually announcements come early and strong, but this year it seems like they're holding off until the last moment to reveal everything.

I've noticed they tend to send groups of 20 people or so at a time and space out inbetween the groups, however the main issue I see is the people in the front of the group move really slow because they're scared to move forward and that ends up holding the whole group back and eventually clogging up the maze and creating the Congo line. I guess the only way to remedy this would be to send smaller groups and space them out more, but wait times would get way longer. They could always sell less tickets but it's a money making business so they're going to cram as many people into the pro as they can.

I also usually see those people who don't want to do stuff; like in the 'Walking Dead' maze one year, a woman didn't want to walk through the semi truck with walkers in it and that held up everyone for quite a while.

I've always felt like each haunt has their own style, so I wouldn't say that Universal has to steal all the other tricks from other haunts because they already have their own unique way of scaring. I've been to every haunt in socal and HHN wins for best set design and makeup hands down. Knotts, Fright Fest, Queen Mary, and all San Diego haunts feel like a room with a few decorations and I never feel truly transported like I do at HHN. While the strobe light jump scares feel a bit repetitive after all these years, so do the stand around scareactors in other haunts. I'm all for HHN trying new things like the hologram walls but in the end I wouldn't want them to do an overhaul of the way they scare people.

Exactly! I've been to other haunts and there's a reason I go back to Horror Nights more. I feel like a close second would be Queen Mary because they have some stellar set design and scare factor, but the stories feel a bit vague. HHN tells stories in a more linear sense than other haunts that make it feel cinematic. I'm going to give Knotts a second try this year, but I was super disappointed in them the last time I was there.

Fright Fest feels more catered to middle school children, and the San Diego haunts (though the last time I was there I was in middle school) have never really scared me. They felt like someone trying to do a haunt after going to a good one. HHN does have some major issues; the biggest one being crowds. The mazes feel cramped with people, and the crowd control inside the mazes draw me out of it and almost distract more than they should. Crowds also make it hard to explore scarezones, and also make the Terror Tram annoying. But I guess crowds ruin most things (Disneyland used to be tolerable before you had to shove your way through the different lands).

just a general question, how does one even get into a test screening? is it just a thing that happens in LA?

Usually there are sites that allow people to see a movie early. Often times I go to a Studios website and there will be a tab that says something like 'Early Access Screenings' or something (haven't done that for any "big" movies). There have been a few times I've gotten in just by walking around a mall in LA (big malls though, usually with a large theater).

It's not exclusive to LA though, I just know about those things for here since I live here. I know of people who go to screenings in NYC and sometimes in Dallas.

  9. 6 minutes ago, LetsMakeBiskuts said:

I've stayed silent about this for a couple weeks, but I'll say it now since we have almost everything announced and orientation is tomorrow for scareactors so everything will inevitably be released one way or another.

I was one of 8 people called back for a special character role for HHN this year and before the callback they told us that we aren't going to have to sign any NDAs or anything, but if we can't keep the secret we should walk out know (everyone stayed).

After they told us what the maze was and the characters and had us do a little work infront of them. It's a maze that hasn't been announced yet and my lips have been sealed, but watching people speculate and knowing what it is has been killing me.

Did you end up with the role?

  10. 1 hour ago, aam1995 said:

Yeah, thanks for being 'rude'. You don't have to sign anything at test screening , st least not at the ones I've gone to. Didn't have to sign anything for Annabelle: Creation or for IT.

AND also, NDA is to avoid people talking about the plot lines , revealing anything important and casting . Mentioning the way a house looks would no where near me breaking the "policy".

I've never heard of a film screening not having you sign an NDA beforehand. Literally all the ones I've been to (for big and small Studios equally) have both made me sign those and leave all electronics behind. Even the rushed screenings where they say "the movie is starting in half an hour, do you want to go?". I even saw a screening of 'It', and haven't seen such intense security at a screening, so I don't buy that at all.

As well, the NDA restricts you from talking about the film in any regards. The house could be a bigger deal than you think, so the safe thing is to just not say anything at all, because that's still a breach in contract. I'm still on the fence about 'Chapter 4' taking that spot, but I believe HorrorNightsFan13 more than I believe you because his logic is more grounded than your claims.

True! I just hope they're all annoucned before opening! Someone at work joked the last annoucement would be the night before opening.

Bill & Ted was cancelled mid 2013 because they made a joke about gay superman. I never saw the show at the event nor did I ever hear the joke so that's really all the explanation I can give. Perhaps we could have someone who knows a bit more about the Bill & Ted show chime in. Grindhouse? Freak?

During the course of the show, Zod came in to destroy the land of Oz (if I'm not mistaken), but gay Superman was busy getting it on with Captain Kirk. To help him with the fight, he had to take steroids which made him a "tough man" who eventually fought Zod off.

That's all I pretty much remember from the incident, and I never understood why that was the reason. Sure, the show was offfensive, but they warned audiences about that beforehand. And that honestly wasn't the worst joke in the show. It had some pretty racist bits during the start with some naughty humor at the end.

What were they (if anyone has any pictures that'd be pretty cool) my first year going to HHN was 2015 but I didn't get to see much since I was also working the event.

    992010_orig.jpg

Essentially they would be stationed in New York Street and give information to people passing by, but mostly make jokes about the guests. I thought it added more depth to the environment (only really remember the clown from 2012 and the student from 2013) and at times made it scarier that this calm person was surrounded by bursts of flame and chainsaws.

  14. 58 minutes ago, LetsMakeBiskuts said:

They are extremely strict with their saws because if one person were to mess up or injure a guest the park officials could freak out and say no more chainsaws ever (like how we lost the enterance carnival barker cause somewas offended or whatever happened).

No way! I was wondering what happened to that role! I kinda just figured it couldn't fit the theme, but seeing as we also lost 'Bill and Ted' for a pretty absurd reason too, I guess it makes sense.

  15. 3 minutes ago, JonaMar said:

From what I gather, no. Unless you go in for orientation and they decide you'd be a better fit as a speaking role. Just creatures/Monsters, this includes any non-speaking role on either the Tram, SZ. or Maze (Chainsawers included).

What kind of training goes into chainsawers (and people with weapons in general)? Because they always get crazy close to me and it feels more like a skill than anything to not hit someone during the commotion.

  16. 12 minutes ago, JonaMar said:

There's a facebook page (several infact) for scareactors and basically, everyone said that the JP queue is 100% guaranteed to be Insidious.

Now, the ONLY way I see IT coming to HHN this year, would be if it's in Parisian Courtyard. But I don't know about that. I feel that the maze ending in a purge gauntlet would be superb and is also why I think that you're spot on. But at the same time, an IT maze would be absolutely killer. But if I'm not wrong (and I usually am) I vaguely remember hearing that Murdy said "no clowns" this year. But I didn't get that from him directly (via twitter or the interwebs).

BUT. Pennywise isn't a clown per se, so he could be trolling real hard.

No, not when you audition. Scare actors find out their roles on orientation day which is when we get fitted. People with speaking roles e.g. the lady at the beginning of TCM maze last year are cast separately. So that'd be done through an acting agency where they ask for a person with a specific look and you audition for that role only. Maze hosts however, get to choose when they go in to interview which maze they want to work at and are given offers. If you're tall, you're more likely to end up playing a nice tall character (usually a titan like Michael, Jason, or Leather face) all three of these characters were portrayed by actors over 6 feet tall.

Feel free to send any Scareactor related questions or behind the scenes operation questions my way.

Wait, so if you go to audition you can't get a speaking role? Just creatures/monsters? And how do you apply for maze host?

I have ate way too many questions to fit here, should a new forum be started? That way we can get updates throughout the season of how it goes behind the scenes?

  17. 7 minutes ago, JonaMar said:

So here's something I find funny. The week before my audition, I watched all three Evil dead movies (The originals) and I was so pumped because I thought "shit, the cabin would be a bitchin facade and it would also be hilarious having a scene where ash and the moose head and the lamp laugh" then after my audition, my friends and I all sat around and speculated and I said I hoped that Evil Dead would be coming. And it is. Sort of. Am I a god? Unlikely. Just thought I'd share.

Random question; when you audition do you get a say which maze you end up in? Or is it based on whichever you're most suited for? (so if you're under 5 ft and male, they'd put you in AHS no questions asked)

Early on in the season we're all great people because we just share lists of what we want for the year and what we expect, usually everyone comes to agree on a few key properties (this year it was Jigsaw, The Conjuring, Insidious ch. 4, and The Shining). Then the lineup leaks and at that point we're pretty sure about everything that's coming to the event. And later on in the season when quite a few properties on the leaked lineup have been announced is when we become like this. At this point in the season, it's pretty much too late to throw a new property in the mix because the leaked lineup is all but confirmed.

The connections aren't always as complicated as they appear to be. Without bringing in the facade as evidence for Insidious ch. 4, John talked about having to use a large number of reference images for a maze, and considering Insidious had been pushed back I would say that's a fair bet for Insidious. Jigsaw was presumably finished by then or atleast finished enough to the point where John could watch a cut of the film to make the maze. The actual codename Writer's Block has nothing to do with the actual act of having writer's block but with the picture specifically the letter N since it's entirely blacked out. N could connect to quite a few things with Insidious, it could be LiN Shaye who plays Elise. It could be that Lin Shaye appeared in Nightmare on Elm Street. The one that's most likely to me is just as simple as iNsidious. You can say it Nsidious and it sounds similar to the title. He hasn't said much more about Writer's Block other than the letter N so that's pretty much all we have to go on. I've tried getting more out of him but he's pretty tight lipped if he feels like we're onto him

Even without the leaked lineup, Ashes to Ashes would've been easy to solve. John talked about a Bowie album, then said the next maze announcements hint was an album from 1980. Bowie+1980=Ashes to Ashes off of Scary Monsters

It's just hard to imagine 'Chapter 4' coming. Leaked lineup aside, those all are solid points to make towards it coming (probably a bit more solid than Neibolt because that was the only N I could think of). What if he brought 'Insidious' to the event, had a moment from '4' and tackled  more events from '3'? That way he could still bring it back next year (like I think should happen), and it can still make an appearance this year.

The facade and first two rooms being from the new film and being scenes from the teaser, and then a transition to the Further, after which we see the apartment complex and the Man Who Can't Breathe? That's the only way I can really see it happening.

    3 minutes ago, JonaMar said:

So in light of all this speculation madness, I messaged 4 different people. One of them is a scareactor and day ops lead, the other is a returning ops supervisor, the last two are returning scare actors. The response I got from the first scare actor was that Insidious, Jigsaw, and blumhouse are what he's heard. The other two scareactos said the same thing. THEN I asked the supervisor, he said that IT was on the official promo poster that hasn't gone live yet. 1. I trust this person more than anyone I've asked. 2. He's the more reputable source who is friends with last year's event coordinator. So I'm pretty torn. On one hand, Insidious makes more sense. but on the other, a supervisor with hella tight connections confirmed IT. I think that what you need to do is provide an argument for why it is IT. I feel like "Nsidious" is too easy in in your face.

Well, to be honest at this point, either way it goes down I'm definitely going to be there (already bought my tickets). I'm hoping 'Insidious' focuses less on 4 and more on 3 as I feel they neglected the apartment in the Further by having the Man Who Can't Breathe solely and none of the other residents.

However, if It does come than I hope it's treated the same way. It has more forms than Pennywise and I hope Murdy gets the chance to show that.

If Jigsaw comes, I hope it's just a disgusting maze that really forces the gore onto us like 'Evil Dead: Book of the Dead' did.

If Blumhouse of Horrors comes, I'd like less Purge and more Split/Sinister, being that Purge has been so active at the event since the first film came out.

Never signed an NDA so you're wrong there, bud. Also, the source is just someone saying things and me relaying it to the forum. They still could be wrong, I just have reason to believe they aren't. We don't sign NDA's till orientation which isn't for another week.

    Then that's Universal's bad - trusting people.

I'm going to continue to speculate on a speculation forum. Heck, a few weeks ago I brought up 'Halloween: Season of the Witch' as a possibility and never got the response I got for mentioning 'It'.

Why are you opposing the leaked lineup so much? What evidence do you have that goes against it? All you're doing is pulling speculation about IT out of your behind and getting upset that we're shutting you down because we know what we're talking about. The leaked lineup is confirmed by numerous people with numerous inside sources. But okay, believe IT is coming all you want, but you're gonna get nothing but disappointment if you're so set on IT coming to the event and you'll get an I told you so from me and others when Insidious ch. 4, Jigsaw, and Blumhouse of Horrors are the final announcements. You're right, nothing is 100% confirmed. And while I would LOVE for IT to come this year as I've heard from people who have seen advanced screenings that it's amazing, it's just not happening. IT didn't even FILM IN LA WHERE THE HOUSE IS LOCATED! IT filmed in Canada. The house that's in the JO Queue won't be IT, it's Insidious ch. 4, the house in Parisian Courtyard won't be IT, it's Blumhouse of Horrors, the house on the metro sets by 747 won't be IT, it's Jigsaw. The leaked lineup has no evidence against it and you have no evidence to support your claim.

    I've put my evidence down.

But I think nobody cared to read it because the leaked lineup has everyone in a trance. If it's so wrong to speculate on a speculation forum, then maybe delete the entire forum.

The leaked lineup won. There's no joy in making guesses and trying to figure out what's coming. It told you everything you need to know, the only thing it didn't tell you is how the code names match the property. Murdy chose those code names specifically. You solved the 'Ash vs Evil Dead' one (with help from the leaked lineup), so now is the final challenge to prove me wrong. Connect the code name for JP Queue to 'Chapter 4' without pulling the house facade into it. Sure, writer's block is a ruse, but work backwards and try to connect the dots with more evidence than the leaked lineup.

I know 'It' may not actually come, but I'm almost pretty sure neither will 'Insidious: Chapter 4'. I'm speculating it will come based off hints and other ties that Murdy has provided us to try and have fun until an announcement comes.

If if I had known the entire Horror Nights fandom would be this way, then I wouldn't have joined this forum. But hey, once the leaked lineup has everyone removed from its trance I'm sure you're all lovely people.

Why is this "IT" conversation still happening? Stop trying to make IT happen, IT's not going to happen. Jigsaw. Insidious. Blumhouse.

Because the only sign 'Insidious' is coming is a leaked maze lineup that got one wrong. So there's still a chance it can have something else wrong too.

This is a speculation forum, so I'm going to speculate until the full lineup is announced from John Murdy.

Also the rights to IT as a haunted House was given to Hollywood + Vine so sorry no IT Maze this year.

    http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/amp/heat-vision/haunted-house-bringing-pennywises-lair-hollywood-1027761

Not the first time a film has had multiple haunt experiences for it in a single year.

But wait, that contradicts earlier statements that King was holding onto his IPs and not allowing haunts made after them? Seeing as we're getting 'The Shining' at Horror Nights, and 'The IT Experience' in Hollywood (which runs August 14 - September 10, ending before Horror Nights begins so no overlap there), that must mean that King doesn't hold exclusive ownership of the IPs, and the studio does. Sure, he created them, but he had to have sold partial rights to the studio in order for the films to be made. And while he has a partial foot in the door, the studio does get a pretty fair say in what becomes of them. So we have 'The IT Experience' in Hollywood, and the traveling 'Float: A Cinematic VR Experience' happening during a time when King is apparently against his IPs being used in such a manner.

    Anything can happen.
