Last year they used the new metal detectors before City Walk to eliminate the ones in front of the park.

This also means that they don't have you line up by the arches any more. If it's like last year, you should be able to go right to the front gates.

Good to hear. How much of a clusterf*ck was Citywalk? I'd imagine not nearly as bad because they can consistently let people through all day without having to wait until 6:30 to start.

  2. Good to hear.

To all of the photographers, videographers, and creative types I hope you have a great night! I'll probably forgo the camera tonight so I can do houses and shows but might bring it out tomorrow. Looking forward to hearing about this years best spots to hang out. See you all out there.

  3. I haven't been to UO in a couple years up until I went to Citywalk for a movie and some drinks a couple weeks ago and holy shit it's like going through a TSA checkpoint. With security as tight as it is at Citywalk, will there be another chokepoint of metal detectors at the entrance to the park like I'm used to? Or will this relieve some of the pressure at the turnstiles to the event?

  4. So,

I haven't been to UO in a couple of years up until I went to Citywalk to catch a movie and some drinks a week ago. Holy hell, going through security is like a TSA checkpoint now. Do we know what their stance is on DSLRs for the event? I want to bring my D7k and 50mm f/1.4 tonight and tomorrow, but I'm hesitant to be turned away. I remember past years some people would be turned away at the UO security checkpoint at the gates because "no professional photography allowed" while others had no issues. Anybody got any info?

Festival of the Dead type zone with bright skull masks, neon colors, fun music, etc.

Man if we ever got a true successor to Esqueleto Muerte from 2010 I would be thrilled. That zone was the shit and one of my absolute favorites to watch. Wondering what my "hang out" zone will be this year.

Edit: Can't seem to find the info on their site for hours. Are tomorrow and Saturday running until 2am?

Edit 2 - Electric Boogaloo: Found them. 1am.

I give this house a lot of grief, but they were honestly trying to pull off the impossible. Kubrick is best at suspense and meandering long takes and wide shots. When you're cramped on space, you're trying to move people through quickly and trying to get jump scares, this just doesn't work as a house. It would have been better as an "in the mind of Jack Torrance" type house instead of scenes from the film.

I would have preferred walking through a blizzard of snow and "All work no play..." papers than having them stick on the wall, etc.

They would've had to pull off some incredible perspective manipulation to really get the feel for this house. I know I was treading on glass getting hype for this one, but I knew what I was getting myself into. Houses at this event are always better for more aggressive scares than going for "ambiance" simply because the lack of space makes everything in your face whether you like it or not. It doesn't really play well for a more slow, methodical psychological thriller like The Shining.

And with that thought, maybe it's better we're not getting an Alien house on board the Nostromo. It just sucks because the more slow, edge of your seat horror movies are more my thing than in your face aggressive stuff.

Yeah, the maze is at the beginning and end of the house, and cleverly, it's different. The opening is slightly snowy which is what it was at the beginning of the film when they're just meandering through it and the end is colder and harsher when he's trying to find Danny.

Ok, that sounds pretty cool. I want to poke for spoilers about what's in the house and what's not, but I'll refrain. I can wait a day.

  8. Pretty much the same feedback I've seen from other TM's. Since it's consistent, it must be moderately accurate.

Shame about The Shining. Maybe I'll have enough of a buzz going after a few shots before going in on Friday to ease the pain. You and I have both seen houses do a complete 180 in terms of quality within a couple of weeks. But that's not really possible when a major part of the problem is the set. Idk, we'll see.

I'm excited for Dead Waters the most at this point. Everybody has said it's gorgeous.

See you this weekend maybe? If so we've gotta grab drinks or food and hit some houses. Sending you a PM.

The soundtrack for The Shining was decent, as it opens with the song from the opening credits. The facade is the hedge maze and that's pretty lame. If your expectations are low, it's best to keep them there :(

The facade is the end of the movie. Lel.

  9. That skull design looks like an Ed Hardy knockoff you'd see in a cheap hiphop store on South Beach. Not a fan. Where the hell did that even come from? "What do we want to be the face of HHN this year?" "Uh, how about a skeleton. With some cheap bedazzled shit in his face. And give him some generic tribal looking shit with it"

My 10 year old nephew could design a more interesting character.

I'll likely be picking up a house shirt (with the small front pocket logo) and a B&T shot glass to toss one back for the boys.

Jesus, how do corporate types have the time to follow the forums at work?  When I'm at work, I'm busy, you know, WORKING.  And I'm sure you all get paid far better than I do...

As long as I get my work done, nobody bothers me. If I'm configuring routers/switches/APs or building a server out, yeah I don't browse the web. But when I'm parsing logs, imaging laptops, or waiting on things to restart, I browse the web for a few minutes. Nothing else to really do.

Also keeping a dir /w /s running on the root of C:\ looks super important and nobody has any reason to suspect I'm wasting time.

    But back to Blumhouse

    It's the Hollywood zone.

I think the "Claws will seep everywhere" was just hypeman stuff but who knows at this point?

     ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Yeah it kinda goes back and forth on itself. Somebody should've proofread that. We'll just have to wait and see. I really hope it's a full fledged scarezone though. And not a half-assed one at that just for the excuse of "no but you see, this scarezone spreads out to all the other scarezones!"

Staying optimistic though. I like the idea of Invasion, and it's about time we got something Trick r Treat related. I just wish it wasn't in the most claustrophobic area. But I do think it works best there. Purge, eh. Altars and Festival could be literally anything at this point.

  13. Damn. Down to 4 scarezones? I thought 5 was bad the last couple of years. Take me back to 2009 when we had 7. Scarezones are my favorite part of the event. Kinda bummed.

Edit: Yes I know there were only 4 in 2014 as well. Still sucks. At least it's not 2012.

I wanted to post a slight frustration I saw with one of the Facebook pages the other day. There was a guy on there who posted something in the vein of "blah blah blah marketing sucks, Ash Vs. Evil Dead sucks, people are whiners, HHN is going to be great anyway." I wanted to comment something, but I thought it might fall on deaf ears, so I decided to write here.

It seems to me that people with that mentality do not know or understand THEY and the droves of people who are ok with "settling," are the reason the event perpetually seeks out IP's to turn into houses. If done right, I have no problem with walking through some of the scenes of my favorite horror films of all time. However, the need for familiarity when it comes to an event has become more and more required because there is a shift in the audience to more things pop culture. This seems to be the case across the board when it comes to amusement parks. I think Walt Disney would be rolling around in his grave if he saw how many other companies The Walt Disney company has acquired in order to tell stories. Marvel and Star Wars are amazing and yes they need the power of the Disney theme parks in order to make those stories come to life in the amusement world, but where has the original intent of the Imagineer disappeared to?

I'm extremely grateful that Creative has bumped the original/IP ratio down a notch from 3/6 to 4/5 and that they continue to keep most of their scarezones original in content. However, as a fan, I want a bigger push for more original stories and that starts with having an icon as well. I know there are mixed feelings about icons, but I feel they really drive the event. They have a cool story and therefore they've had experiences and partners in crime that have cool stories, etc. It's CAN really be a never ending rabbit hole of creativity, even if some of the concepts are similar, new characters can emerge. Universal has always been about "riding the movies," but I feel a 7/2 original/IP house ratio would be perfect.

It's been said that there are seven types of stories, but I believe there are an infinite amount of characters. So let's start creating again and stop relying on outside sources to dictate our event! Maybe I'm just old fashioned, but that's my two cents.

I would love nothing more than an event that was all original content. But I feel we have this discussion every year. And I know you know this, but I'm simply reiterating. Universal is a business. Businesses exist to maximize profit. The "normies" account for the grand majority of profit for an event like this. Normies are driven much more by recognizable characters from pop culture. At a certain point, they know when they have enough recognizable pop culture media that they don't have to invest in licensing for that year any more and can pay their creative department (much less) to come up with some original content. It's a tipping point where the cost of licensing fees and contracts outweighs any additional profit they might make from selling a few more tickets.

Again, I know we all know this. I just feel like it has to be said, and there's quite a few new faces around here. I'm always in favor of new, fresh, original content. But that's just the way it is.

But we have a Shining house, and that's all that matters to me right now tbh.
