  1. I speculate that with the official announcment of the inclusion of TWD at this years event, people will start to complain.

Wait, that's not a speculation, it happened with the initial announcement of CITW and Evil Dead. (And I admit initially I wasn't thrilled with those choices, but sometimes campy can wind up being fun and scary....we shall see.)

Very interested to see what is in store this year regardless....

  2. Having attended all 22 years of this event, last year was the first year that I was truly disappointed. The crowds were horrendous, the drunks were out in full force and just something seemed to be missing...it was missing that old HHN vibe that I remember from previous years.

Many factors are in play as to our attendance this year, I always have hope that the event will return to what it once was, a celebration of Halloween. That the focus will be put back on the ambiance and overall atmosphere of the event and not so much as to how many beer carts or shot girls can be placed in a queue line.

Each year I try to have an open mind when we start to get tidbits of what to expect, this year is no different. Everyone has their own opinion about the event, good, bad or indifferent. I'm hoping that perhaps this year can sway my mindset back to the days of when I loved it and couldn't wait to step out into the fog and see what was waiting for me.

    Here's hoping....

  3. The movie was a waste of two hours of my life.

Given the crowds over the past several years, the house itself could wind up being a waste of upwards of the same if not more depending on wait times.

And I've never been a huge fan of having a wealth of gore inside any house, there's nothing scary about gore, at least to me. So if they plan on gutting this one out so to speak, I'd be curious to see in what way and how it's presented.

And a side note, movie reboots/remakes (this one included) should be banned in the film industry. Period.

  4. I think that's fair, and I know that there are people out there that pine for all-original events with fully formed icons, but I think that 2012 did really well for its intended purpose of broad commercial appeal. Examples:

Gothic and Dead End both felt taken directly from the classic HHN model, appealing to the fans I described above, and I'll also throw in Universal's House of Horrors here too as a tribute to the film studios legacy and great tie-in to the 100 year celebration.

Silent Hill and The Walking Dead appeal to younger and more diverse demographics, as current TV, Movie, and Videogame properties will, and both (especially the latter) played a part in the increased attendance and revenue.

Alice Cooper brought a rock 'n' roll element to the event, which after scaring in myself and seeing what the genre did for 7 in 2011, brings a unique energy to the event, and that's never a negative.

Lastly, Penn & Teller played the part of the playful comedic house, which I understand will never get the type of scares other houses do, but they have their place at HHN.

All told, I think we have a formula for what houses we should see in the coming years that really accomplishes what the event needs to, tweaked a bit from year to year.

Personally, I don't even care about having an icon with this major outlandish backstory that is tied into all elements of the event. I also don't care about having an all original event either. I'm just not a fan of taking another celebrity (like AC or P&T) and creating a house around them. For me, neither of those houses had any type of Halloween feel to them at all. I'm sure if you are a fan of either of them, it was a much different experience. Those houses really had no type of concept to follow, there seemed to be no Halloween element to either of them.

I want to be in a house like Gothic or Silent Hill where you feel immersed in a storyline, something that has that atmospheric prescence of Halloween. I'm a traditionalist when it comes to the holiday, give me, ghosts, goblins, witches, pumpkins, and things that go bump in the night. Hell even using IPs like Jason, Freddy, etc. at least those concepts ooze Halloween. Be it an IP or original concept, I'm for either one as long as it remotely resembles some type of Halloween oriented house.

As I said before, this will be my 23rd year....it's going to take a hell of a lot to impress me this time around. And if they continue to use the same formula for houses in the coming years, personally, that'll be a huge let down for me.

  5. Personally, I don't think any musicians music translates well into a house. Unless you are a fan of the individual the house is based around, you'll be clueless to the images and concepts being presented. At least that's how I see it. For me Halloween has nothing to do with musicians and everything to do with an ambiance of sorts. I can never quite put my finger on that exact tone or atmospheric quality that for me encompasses Halloween, but the event has inched a little closer every year toward hitting it....but then they do something like an AC or P&T house and I'm like "Really Universal?".

This coming year, I'm not sure what to expect. It'll be my 23rd year and honestly, I'm at the point I don't really know what they can pull off that will surprise or scare me. Every year I'm hoping to regain that love I used to have for the event, here's hoping 2013 revives that feeling.

  6. That is exactly why Marilyn Manson would be such an amazing maze if they did it, because he is one of the few artists that is actually Really scary (Or was scary)

His videos are like small horror movies, full of horrific imagery, dirty, just perfect.

I mean imagine stepping into this in a maze

I mean Look at this, this is definitely Maze/house material, take the music off (or watch it on Mute) and it is kind of like a horror movie

tell me these don't look like they would go in a HHN house? Yes the music might suck, just like with Alice Cooper that doesn't matter at all,

Marilyn Manson was pretty much like the Alice Cooper of the 90s, It only makes sense that they would base a house on him if they could. specially because it would actually be scary (compare to the Alice house in Orlando for example)

Never been a fan of Marilyn Manson at all. I think simply because he did try to be so shocking, so avante guard and non-mainstream, that's been done in every generation. And for me he's scary in a "yeap, he needs to have his meds checked" kinda scary, not a Halloween kind of scary. But again, that's what is great about the event, if a house like this would come to fruition, there would be plenty of folks who would love it!

  7. I felt the need to start this thread after reading this gem.

"Since u guys usually make 6 to 7 mazes,..... U guys should defenetly make mazes of "Mama", "The Walking Dead", "Halloween Michael Myers", "Saw" "Freddy Cougar", "Marylin Manson", "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" & "The Hills have Eyes" this movies would be great to be the mazes of HHN 2013, and instead of Alice Cooper, I think Marilyn Manson would be better this year.... Just an opinion ..."

"Freddy Cougar"....next year he'll be Freddy Mellencamp following in the footsteps of his favorite singer.

Marilyn Manson in general is scary, there is really no need for a maze is there?

Yes, because two separate lines along with the express pass line won't make it anymore confusing to all the drunk people or slow the lines down even moreso....genius!

  8. Not sure I can see anymore Doctor Who being integrated into HHN without it sucking even more of the "Halloweenieness" out of the event....even if there are vampires involved. I've seen vampires in various forms utilized enough at this event that if they never show up again that wouldn't be a bad thing in my book. It'd be great to see some type of urban legend house/folklore kind of house.

Again, all just my random opinions and none of which mean much of anything to anyone but me.... B)

  9. OMG, HUSH!! How you doing, Lynn? I was just askin about you.. I've missed you! Ok, now that i'm done with my happy dance, let me state the obvious.. I agree with every single thing you said here. I thought Gothic was more than awesome - it was beautiful and creative and the actors were perfect. I went into that house the most times. TWD, however, was just "ok". I think they had more "walkers' OUTSIDE the house than in. I did enjoy watching the "walkers" outside thought - especially the kid in the wheelchair. While the house had some good props and did a respectable job of recreating parts of the show, it just wasn't scary. At all.

This goes back to what I've said (and what someone else just said a page back - sorry didn't quote it) - it's so much scarier to walk into a house where you have no clue what to expect. All the IP stuff gives you almost complete knowledge of what you'll see WAY before you get there.. thank god, they have great actors every year to mix that up. So, kudos to them for their successes. But why not go for it all?? Have the great actors in houses where people are blindly trying to figure their way through and are already pumped up and nervous and THEN use the actors to put them right over the edge?

I love Halloween - and I agree that there should be parts of this event that really explore the traditional Halloween things. One of my fave street props are the jack-o-lanterns in the trees. I"m glad they do that every year, but let's expand on that.

And for the love of god and everything holy - please no more Alice Cooper. Jeez.

    Eileen...(((HUGS)))

You are exactly right, WAY more walkers outside TWD house than inside. I was just very underwhelmed by that house in general, considering it was one of the most hyped of the entire event, I expected so much more.

I have my own personal reasons for disliking the Alice Cooper house, but that's another topic altogether....LOL

This year reminded me exactly how much I love original houses and overdone IP houses are....nothing beats walking into a house and having little to no idea what the hell is going to happen, THAT is what Halloween is all about, those unexpected scares and surprises. Maybe that's why I didn't really enjoy TWD house that much because it was too predictable.

I've been saying it for years, but for me, a traditional Halloween is the way to go. I got my jack-o-laterns a few years back and with the Skoolhouse, that amped things up a bit, but there is still so much more they could do.

  10. Now there's some wishful thinking. Let's put the Halloween back into Halloween Horror Nights. Not just as a touch here and there, but as a solid focus of the event. Sure there have been sporadic houses and scare zones here and there, but let's put a focus on it.

If they need ip's, bring in Halloween 1 or 3, and Trick r' Treat. And I mean full blown, footie pajama wearing, burlap sack on his head, stab you with a sucker Sam, not a scare zone sort of based on a particular story in the movie. Throw in a corn maze (scare zone would work, house would be better), scarecrows with glowing jack o lantern heads (as scare actors, not props), maybe a house based on Samhain, and the glorious return of Esqueleto Muerte as a house, and I will be a completely happy camper. It is called HALLOWEEN Horror Nights after all, not just Horror Nights.

Will any of this to actually happen? Probably not. But much like Mystique above, it's my fantasy world, that's how I choose to live in it. :)

I'm old school, I like my Halloween traditional, end of story and EVERYTHING you just posted Ryan, yes, yes and yes!!!

Gothic was a million times better than TWD and as I stated before, I'm a major fan of TWD. I think the major issue with TWD was, all great sets, not nearly enough walkers to make it feel like a true zombie oriented house.

    THAT is an awesome idea!

  11. ^This. A million times, this. Halloween Horror Nights has brand equity. They don't have the competition like HHNH does, and don't need to constantly lure people in with something shiny, imo. Just put together a solid event with lots of atmosphere in the park, 8 houses, and some kicking shows. That's all I ask. I don't need to walk through a movie that's playing in Citywalk. Just make it scary.

Exactly Ryan! I just want an event that has a Halloween feel to it, not one that is a social overload of the current movies or trends. Make it scary, make it beautiful, make it fun...and if you wanna add a jack-o-latern or two here and there, that's fine by me.

  12. Oh God.... I pray to the HHN gods that Walking Dead and alice Cooper never EVER come back to Orlando again... I guess I am fine with IP houses if they are at least new, but no repeats... I seriously hope they don't ever come back.

I am a major fan of TWD, but I have to completely agree with you....they need to leave it to television and never, ever, ever have a Walking Dead house again. Ever. Seriously. Never.

The concept was great and the props were wonderful, but that was the one house I was looking forward to the most and the one that disappointed me the most. For it being all about zombies, I think we encountered maybe 8 in the entire house...perhaps it was zombie coffee break time when we went through. And the Alice Cooper house, it was, different...I think I dislike it simply because I got punched in the jaw there by a drunk guy, yeah, not the kind of fond memory I like to have a house.

I would love to see something Dean Koontz or Stephen King oriented, or how about just going back to the old traditional amazing houses we once had? No big names, televisions or movies associated with them, just gorgeous houses with amazing set designs and costumes, like say Gothic from this year or the Hallow, S.S. Frightanic, Scary Tales??? A girl can dream, right?

  13. I'll be there the 13th and 14th as well! Last year, I was there the same weekend (15th and 16th) and Sunday was much, much, worse in terms of crowds. It's unpredictable from what I've seen across the forums.

I'm actually more concerned about how Friday nights are, because I may try and get in that night as well. Is it worth paying full admission (won't have a park ticket that day, so Stay and Scream isn't an option) or will crowds make it unbearable?

Edit: Obviously I think HHN is well worth the price of admission, by "worth it" I meant is it worth the $90 for the extra 6 or so hours? Can I get stuff done? It'll be about $90 for my Stay and Scream for two nights, so I'm a little hesitant on dropping that same amount on just one night..

You said it best, crowds and wait times are completely unpredictable. I would venture to say from experience that Friday and Saturday nights tend to be worse than Sunday. But once again, it's completely a roll of the dice as to what you'll walk into once you are there. If you can afford to do Friday night, then I say go for it...if nothing else, you get an extra night you weren't anticipating.

  14. Of course the only rule that typically applies to Florida weather didn't happen on opening night, :(

That's the one night this year that the forecast was actually spot on...and I think historically it rains every opening weekend at some point...but not the terrential rain that everyone had to deal with on opening night.

  15. I never trust the weather reporters. Ever.

But good luck to anyone attending tonight! Stay dry!

Especially Orlando weather forecasters...they are more often wrong than right.

    And don't forget, it's Florida, you don't like the weather...wait 10 minutes and it'll change... :)

  16. First time through the house I didnt enjoy it because of the group of teenage boys (More like girls) behind me. They would try to run through the house running into me. I got fed up and threw a couple elbows. They stopped.

THESE are the kind of teenagers that I'd love to beat the living crap out of...or at the very least clothesline them when they try to run past me. I have to give you kudos for the elbow throwing.

Happy to hear that this house wound up being a favorite sans the annoying youngsters :)
