Do they still store anything in the back half?  I know they used to store some of the parade stuff.   When taking the tour one year, you could just see all that stuff from some of the house areas (lights on).  Maybe just to partition the house area from the storage area better?

    Maybe?

A quick calculation based on the permit fee tells me the partition is going to cost about $5,400.

I would think there are cheaper ways to do so. They’ve used curtains in the soundstages to separate things in the past. I don’t know.

And with all the rumors about KZ eventually getting overhauled and the potential for that building getting demolished, it just seems like an odd expense choice.

I'm surprised they didn't release the actual house permit for that yet, as they already released all the ones for the houses in the back. Could this mean we are not getting a house in this location this year?

It’s not really a matter of anyone releasing the permit. Permits fall under Florida’s Sunshine law. They are required to be accessible to the public.

Permits are pulled based on when construction starts and when the contractor pulls the permit. There is leeway with how soon the contractor has to pull the permit after construction has begun.

We, also, have to wait for the permits to be placed on the Orlando permit site. Permits seem to have had a small delay this year when it comes to being placed on the site.

We only have 5 house permits. New Parade (B108), all three tents, and SS22. We know we are getting 10 houses, so we haven’t been overly worried about a lack of permits, but we have been wondering where the others are.

I don't think this indicates there won’t be a house in B79, but I am trying to figure out why a partition is being built.

My issue with the speculation map is that the website seems to make it pretty clear it will be a 6 IP /4 original split this year. The map is showing a 5/5 split

The announcement of Monsters, and where it falls on the house grid, showed that placement isn’t as clear cut as original vs IP and announcement order. There is a slot between StrTh and UCM.

It's no longer set up like that on the website.  Also, I guess it all depends on if you consider Universal Monsters an IP or Original (it's a little bit of both).

Yes. The website setup isn’t consistent with a definitive IP/Original split off point.

Monsters is an original take on IPs. It’s is no different than Cabin, Thing: Assimilation, and ‘07 NoES. It’s a strange hybrid.

Not to nitpick but a "yeti's" defining feature is being native to Asia. An "Appalachian Yeti" is a misnomer unless theres some inventive lore about a world traveling fuzzy friend from the Himalayan mountains.

    More fun facts:

    - Yeti comes from a sherpa word yeh-teh

    - Abominable Snowman comes from a mistranslation of Yeti

    - Sasquatch comes from sesquac, a Halkomelem word and is native to the Pacific Northwest

    - Similarly Bigfoot comes from a newspaper misprint of a "big foot" being printed as one word

    - The Skunk Ape/ Swamp Ape or "Florida Bigfoot" is a creature native to Florida (but rarely and sometimes allegedly signed in Louisiana, North Carolina or Arkansas)

    - Attack of the Swamp Yeti was most likely a reference to the Swamp Ape. Most people don't know about the Swamp Ape however and Swamp Bigfoot doesn't quite roll off the tongue

    - The "Bigfoot" native closest to Appalachia is actually called a "Yahoo" as described by Daniel Boone. The Yahoo is a Kentucky legend

Have I told you lately that I like you?

Biggest pet peeve from this year is the cryptid misnomer. My guess is someone has Sasquatch or Bigfoot trademarked.

I’ve been silently fuming about this.

    Graveyard house:

We are apparently talking about the house I was referring to earlier now. The final original.

This would be the one that doesn’t make thematic sense to me.

Is this house going to be the next house coming up for announcement or just one of the houses that's planned to be announced "soon"?

    #eventually!

I’m not sure what the next house announcement will be. It’s the only house that I currently don’t understand based what little I know.

So there will be an Icon house?

Unsure at this time. Most likely not, but I’m always cynically hopeful.

    She hopes so.

I don’t think there will be.

Nor do I think Leave It 2 Cleaver is happening.

You keep answering my questions, and you answer correctly. Out of my head, please. There’s already too many people in there.

Now for the why I’m hopeful. 5/5 still seems to be in play. The announcement/house grid on the site is weird. The way things are spaced is just not visually appealing, unless there are other reasons for the spacing.

If the spacing is based on importance/fan reception, we must ask: What original would be more important than Nightingales? And there’s a house that doesn’t make sense to me. It could simply be a matter of simplicity. I see far more potential and want more, but the house theming is simple/more basic.

It’s my only means of speculation at the moment, and I miss speculating.

You make it through the weekend, Mystique?  I think we all got off rather lightly; at one point I was muttering "That's it.  Everyone is dead..."  Helluva a terrific ride!

They should never schedule HHN house announcements following GoT Sunday...

On the bright side, HHN just announced The Battle of Winterfell house!

I’m alive and kicking and screaming and I am still not ok.

The announcement was a decent diversion, but I was distracted by something on another forum that I’ve been trying to figure out. It’s maintained the majority of my focus today.

If I can get an answer to a question I asked, it may help me piece some things together.

    Yay!! Announcement!!

    And we are moving on...

If I get an answer I may prime the pump by dropping hints to get you all the speculate. More minds are always better at figuring things out.

I want to clarify some things regarding “Marketing versus A&D:”

    1) Through 2007, A&D led the creative process for nearly all aspects of the event. Management was hands off and, because of the event’s success, has no reason to get involved. A&D built the website, designed the icons. There were some conflicts but, generally, the event was entirely theirs.

Everything changed in 2008. Comcast was guiding decisions, and Harry Potter changed the national view of the resort. Roddy left. Oh, and HHN saw a decrease in attendance. From 2009 to 2011, Marketing gained more leverage.

In 2012, TWD happened. 2013, when it took over the park, was the peak of a five year turnaround. Marketing got their win and essentially became co-equals.

    2) Marketing (as a field) requires an immense amount of creativity and creation. It’s just a different focus. While A&D is free to create “for the art,” Marketing creates for a purpose. That’s why Comcast pulled them up to the table in the first place. It’s not A&D’s job to present the event to the masses; it’s Marketing’s job.

To dismiss them as “those who think they can create” is an insult. I’ve done marketing design, and I put just as much (if not more) thought and effort into those products as my “fun” stuff.

    3) My “old school versus new school” comment was intentional. There are some vestiges of the “old Universal,” complete with the “whatever man” and “this belongs to us” mentality that existed through the aughts. The “new” Universal, the Comcast Universal, is corporatizing how they operate. Fans may hate it, but it’s the only way the resort can succeed moving forward. (Side note - the “old school” mindset is where a lot of the current indecision with the parks is coming from).

I admitted I was being snarky and mean. Not really being serious with that comment.

I firmly believe the primary issue is what I stated. There’s a fight over the sandbox and neither side is willing to concede and compromise. There are creative elements to marketing, but there are minds who have invested years into building a mythos. I, being a creator for the art , better understand the minds protecting their mythos. I understand the defensive posture. I, also, find it degrading for individuals to step in and say “Jack is the only icon who can sell” and then have others create two figure heads.

And yes, until they can work together, I think Marketing should stick to creating the marketing and A&D stick to creating the stories.

Why? Because horror is a genre that is greatly harmed by the cliches/popularisms that an effective marketing department should focus on. Appealing to the masses is the marketing goal. They’ve done good with that, but I feel it will harm the brand in the end. Horror isn’t appealing to the masses. It’s niche. It’s always been niche.

What happens when there is no TWD or AHS or StrTh? They aren’t going to last. It’s been good years for horror fans, but it’s tenuous. It’s not permanent. The cycle of popularity will end. It always does.

Edit: Roddy left in 2009. It was a thing. Not going to go into that further. Don’t ask, but there was a thing.

Can someone explain to me why A&D/Marketing clash so much? Has marketing ever made an overriding decision that down the line resulted in being the right move?

Those who truly create and those who think they can? That was snarky and mean of me.

Simple. You ever create something and someone comes along and tries to play in the world you built? You get a little possessive. And when those newcomers force their frivolous ideas onto your world, you becomes even more possessive and jaded.

Marketing needs to stick to marketing and stay and stay out of the creative world.

Okay, Mystique, GoT question here... I've not read the books.  Have watched the whole series and, man, this season is off the charts.  Has the show sufficiently diverged from the books such that no one really knows who will live or die?  Does the show have a "Daryl" type character who never appeared or was a minor character in the books yet is a primary character in the show?

Considering Jon Snow is still dead in the books, I’d say the show has diverged. It’s actually surpassed the books. No one knows anything anymore. Several characters have be merged into other characters. Pod, Missandei, and Grey Worm have grown more than their book counterparts. Missandei is about 10 when Dani first meets her. Daryl type characters, no.

And to keep this HHN related: GoT has some excellent horror iconography, but the appeal to the show for me has always been the characters. I’m not sure I’d be happy with a house due to this.

Was really hoping for an announcement today.  Guess it will be next week now since Marvel will take over the world starting tomorrow night.

I was hoping for an announcement this week so I could have something to focus on after the Battle of Winterfell. I am not going to be ok Monday. I’ll be a blithering mess Sunday night.

I apologize in advance if I start to randomly create crazy spec starting around 10:30pm Sunday night. It will be my coping mechanism.

    I LOVE Deep Star Six.

I love all of them. Deep Star Six is second place to Leviathan. Leviathan and DeepStar Six get a lot of flack for being an “Alien” rip off, but I have to wonder whether Ridley was inspired by Leviathan for Prometheus. At least, when it comes to the means of monster creation.

Nope. It was mentioned that Hysteria was fitting for the general public's reaction last year to a house. Considering GB was nowhere at the event last year...

Things change when more information comes out.

Assumption are made for codenames in many cases. Take the fact that Pit was changed to Discus.

Hysteria was assumed to be StrTh, but that is probably Dog.

  14. I spent most of my day in my own world, followed by the Land of Retail.

I’ve seen it mentioned somewhere, but not sure if it was on here.

The Abyss and Leviathan are movies that came out in 1989. There was one more titled Deep Star Six. All of them dealt with otherworldly creatures in the deep ocean. The Abyss was less monster movie than the other two, but The Abyss is far more recognizable.

Yes, I think he missed capitalizing Falls.

Guessing you’re getting at “The Abyss”. Apart from it being a James Cameron sci fi film, I’m still not getting the connection. I’m very slow today

First line of that riddle should help with a connection.

Ifrit's clue 2 is about Hellraiser, I think. Leviathan is a dark god in that mythology.

    Leviathans have their own mythology.
