  1. Have they relocated the carnival games yet? Knott's had Walking Dead plush as prizes last year. It would be nice if Universal did a few horror themed prizes.

Last year we "won" Furry Bones plushies at the game at the top of the escalators (swing the mallet to ring the bell). I say "won" cos it was $20 a pop and "everyone's a winner". But they're damn cute and gave us something to squeeze/ try to hide behind as we went through the rest of the mazes. lol

My plushie looked just like this:

    And my daughter's, like this:

  2. Honestly about FOTL passes unless you are going on a sunday or thursday where the park closes at 1:00 or 12:00 its kinda pointless to get FOTL every year I went on a friday or saturday and was able to hit everymaze except 2010 and last year but that was because my group wanting to rest or do a ride instead. Trust me the extra hours actualy do help against the crowds If you know the right combination or formula for the year trust me last year we went straight into the lower lot (btw would of probably went faster if we did Walking dead before but ehh) went into SH into Transformers into the mummy into TCM into JP and litteraly got throught the lower lot whitihn 40 minutes. A big part of hitting everything is know where the mazes enter and exit, and keeping track of time, what was a big help but litteraly the app does not work anymore was the Universal App it would give you all the wait times.

In advance of going to our first HHN last year (in typical Jill fashion, LOL) I researched the hell out of everything. And so in the weeks preceding our visit (Sun., Oct 21st), I would sit here at home, especially on Sunday nights, and watch the queue times on my phone app and online. Both were good for preplanning, but I didn't glance at either while we were there.

    The website: http://nbcustudio.mo2do.net/s/showPage.do?pageId=8963114&tmpNum=96

The app I used was RideHopper (I think) for Android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ridehopper

Just noticed there are a couple of new apps (published this month) that may or may not prove helpful:

Universal Studios Hollywood Pro by MNLab (.99 to buy, no reviews yet)

Theme Parks by Liquid Ice Studios (free, 4.7 out of 5 stars with 10 reviews)

Don't know if any of these will track HHN wait times, but it might be worthwhile to check them out.

  3. Here's a random tip (if you didn't know already):

Q: Just spot the perfect HHN snowglobe (or trinket of choice), but don't want to lug it through mazes all night?

    No worries!

A: You can have your purchase sent to the main gift shop by the front gate, and it will be held for you there to pick up on your way out!

    Now, wasn't that helpful? :D

Edit: Also, if you're staying at one of the onsite hotels you can have all of your purchases sent directly to your room.

  4. I found the Japanese equivalent of the boogyman yesterday...maybe we'll see that

    http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Namahage

I'd really love to see an Egyptian or Greek mythological maze at some time. It's taught in most high schools and even some in Jr high. I would assume there's some classes in college as well.

    Omg! Those poor Japanese kids!

"Happy New Year!" *cheers and all around merriment*

    BAM! BAM! BAM!

*opens door to see three scary monsters on the front step brandishing swords*

"WE'VE COME FOR THE CHILDREN!! Are there any naughty ones around? heh heh heh"

    "AAAAaaaaaaaaahhhhhhh!!! "

I can't help it if I don't want this to be over.

So..... VIP experience. I'm serious, I don't know what it is. Someone want to enlighten me?

Bah, nvm. I'll Google it. =p

  5. But that mindset is just going to kill their own enjoyment, so that's alright.

    ^That.

Personally, I really appreciate that Murdy & Co. are pulling lore from other cultures besides Anglo-European for the originals. I grew up here in CA, my bestie was Latina, but I'd never heard of El Cucuy prior to researching Pumpkin. I'd love to see something next year based on Asian lore like Ridesandstuff suggested!

  6. That's so awesome, Asylum! It's kind of funny though, because I'm reconsidering staying onsite now. lol It occurred to me that since I'm going to buy VIPs for HHN, we'll have "free" valet parking for the vent (seems a waste not to use, but silly if we're staying just yards away!). So, I'm leaning toward the Beverly Garland and saving a little $. I really, REALLY prefer staying in 4 star hotels (not rich, just always use Priceline bidding) when we travel, but the Beverly Garland is a 3.5 star and gets consistent good reviews on Traveladvisor.

But back to your stay :) A perk that (I think) is really cool about staying onsite - When you buy your souvenirs at the shops in the park, you don't have to carry them around all night - you can have them sent directly up to your room! :)

You can also do something similar if you aren't staying onsite - you can have your purchases sent to the main gift shop by the front gate and held for you there to pick up on your way out. (I should post this over in the Tips and Tricks thread!). :)

  7. Here's Murdy's posts about El Cucuy from last night:

So...I can tell you a little bit about EL CUCUY...or I can let you sleep? Its your choice...what say you? Do you want to hear more???
Duérmete niño, duérmete ya... Que viene el Coco y te comerá (Sleep child, sleep now... Or else the Coco will come and eat you!")"
Every culture has a legend about "The Boogeyman." In Mexico...The Boogeyman has a name...they call him "El Cucuy"
No one really knows what El Cucuy looks like...no one who has ever gotten close to him has lived to tell the tale...
Some say he is a horrible monster with razor sharp teeth, others say he is a shadow, an evil spirit that can change forms....
They say he lives in a cave, high up in the hills and comes down to the villages at night...searching for disodedient children....
Of course, this was a story you were told as a child to get you to behave...now you are older you no longer believe in El Cucuy...
But maybe your parents knew something you did not, maybe there is something hiding in your closet...waiting...under your bed...
Maybe there's a good reason to be afraid of the dark....
OK...now here's the info. This is an original maze based on the legend of El Cucuy or as some know him El Coco...
We did La Llorona for two years (3 if you count the scare zone) and we wall felt it was time to move on...do something NEW...
I first came across the story of El Cucuy when I was doing research back in Jan. A shape shifting monster that eats children? Works for me!
I brought the story to Chris and then...I went on paternity leave. When I came back, I had a concept but Chris did one too...very different
So we compromised, we did half my concept and half of Chris' concept. Its being built right now...in 3 locations tied together...
The areas include the area in front of Mel's Diner, Parisian Courtyard and a building that used to house the Fear Factor Live Casting Center
Since the word "Coco" is an early term for what we call today "Jack O Lanterns." The code name for this maze was "Pumpkin"
Pumpkins play a role in the maze, so does something else I came across called "The Island of Dolls" I mean...El Cucuy must take souvenirs?
But what to do about the surrounding architecture? Mel's Diner and The Palace store are Art Deco style...why not start in a movie theatre...
I came across a genre of horror, popular in Mexico in the 60's. Lucha Libre Films. Imagine the classic monster movies with wrestlers!
So I made one called El Cucuy: The Boogeyman...its awful...I play the token American actor thrown into a foreign film. Dr. Albondigas
But don't worry, you won't see much of that film before the screaming starts...and the ripping...and tearing...and crying....and....
When I wrote El Cucuy...I was picturing Danny Trejo...so its amazing that Danny came on board to be our narrator...that was a fun session
Its late...and you need to go to sleep...still more to come...sleep tight...oh, and check the closet before you turn the lights off...#carny

An event in LA county, which has a 47% Hispanic population, does a mazes based on Hispanic folklore and then another since the first was very popular and it's pandering. Yet the weird thing is...I've never heard that any of the mazes that featured literally all white casts were pandering. Vampire and werewolves are part of European folklore, and HHN even brought in Figure (a white guy) to give the maze a soundtrack. I haven't seen Insidious 2, but there's probably not going to be anybody that isn't white (dead or alive) in that maze. Black Sabbath are all white English dudes and there's scenes based in Europe. TCM didn't have any non-white characters. Neither did Silent Hill. Neither did Alice Cooper Goes to Hell. Neither did Wolfman. Neither did HOTC. Neither did My Bloody Valentine. Neither did The Thing. Neither did Halloween. Neither did The Strangers. Neither did Chucky's Funhouse. I'm not sure of Friday the 13th or Nightmare on Elm Street did, but it doesn't look like it. Bill and Ted, which parodies mostly white majority TV shows and movies. Most of the characters that weren't white had their race be the center of the joke. Toyz was set in London. The Klownz go go dancers were white with long blonde hair. Witchez was set in a European village. Freakz was set in Paris. Zombieville was set in an English village. Hell, most scarezones are supposedly based in some European town.

But two mazes and a scarezone based on Mexican folklore and that's pandering. That seems weird to me, when the entire event has centered around IPs with all or mostly white characters and European or American folklore/settings since pretty much day one.

I like how your text got bigger as you went on- just like when someone is about to lose their cool and they start getting louder .. and louder... :P

Edit: Awww you fixed the font! Boooo!

  8. yeah, seriously. Once again lurking here and I noticed that 100% accuracy done by all of ya'll. Kinda fishy, what if its Murdy making multiple accounts on this site to leak out information secretly 0_o I'm pretty lukewarm about the houses, but they seem to be changing up some of the traditional experiences. Color me interested.

Lmao I think this must be the highest compliment we've received to date!! So awesome.

  9. "But what to do about the surrounding architecture? Mel's Diner and The Palace store are Art Deco style...why not start in a movie theatre..." That makes no sense to me.

"I came across a genre of horror, popular in Mexico in the 60's. Lucha Libre Films. Imagine the classic monster movies with wrestlers!" Murdy has not convinced me yet? I hope he says this won't have wrestlers in it...

Edit: I think he's mentioning that it will be a short film before entering the maze.

Found this when researching Cucuy  Btw -"why not start in a movie theatre.." Huge hats off to DTH, Grindhouse, Ferox and anyone else that I forgot to mention (sorry!!) that called the theater part!! Excellent work, gentlemen!

    3. @HorrorNights @Midtowngirl916 If the stars are ever right you have to do something with the black plague sometime.

    4. @JoshtopusRex It was a scare zone early on 06 I think

    5. @JoshtopusRex Yes they are, aren't they. Might see something like that this year....
