  1. That is a good mindset to have with VIP. As your night progresses you find yourself settling into the things you really want to repeat (mazes or rides) or enjoying the overall atmosphere. The only "structured" activity is the VIP tour and that was done differently the past two years. In 2011, your tour was scheduled upon arrival at the RIP lounge; last year the tour was scheduled based on your arrival time at check-in. For us, we were one of the first in line and our tour started as soon as the gates opened so we missed the opening scaremonies for the first time in four years. It will be interesting what changes will occur for 2013.

Since you're a veteran at this Asylum, could you tell me - Where do I go once we're at the park to get our VIPs? Thanks!! :)

  2. Jill, can I just say thank you for all the tips you have provided. I follow most of these myself but the time and effort it must have taken to give that information deserves a thanks in my book. I'll certainly be checking out those apps at the very least.

My pleasure! I would have been completely lost last year if I hadn't come across this board, so I'm stoked to have something to contribute this year! :)

For planning purposes, you can use our Google map which has everything marked out on it. Link's in my post near the top of this page.

  3. Someone give me some tips: Where should I go first when I go to the HHN? and last? And bla bla bla I'm getting FOL passes so ya I'm trying to get on everything and chill all over the park as well,

You don't have to do TT first if you have FOLs, even on a Sunday. Like I posted earlier, last year we went on a Sunday w/ FOLs. We also did early admission. We went lower lot first and were able to do everything twice without even using the FOLs, then went upstairs to the TT (which had INSANELY long lines) and used our FOLs there. We were on a tram in less than 10 minutes, no joke! FOLs are wonderful.

I think that if we were going with FOLs this year, #1. I'd definitely do a Sunday again, and #2. I'd still opt for lower lot/ Transformers early entry, Opening Scarimonies be damned! The head start is just too valuable to pass on.

So, yeah, this is how I'd do it:

    • I'd go lower lot, hit Transformers (the first thing to open with early entry).
    • By the time you're out of Transformers, the mazes should be open.
    • Hit ED and Insidious, then go tram to backlot/ TWD/ BS:13.
    • Should still be fairly empty so squeeze in another round of TWD and BS w/o using your FOLs (or with if you need to), tram back to lower lot.
    • Run back though lower lot rides/ mazes, using FOL if necessary.
    • Head upstairs and beeline for TT
    • Use FOL for TT
    • Head over to El Cucuy
    • Use FOL for El Cucuy
    • Bill & Ted
    • Any mazes/rides you haven't FOL'd already.

Keep in mind, they've extended the hours for Thurs and Sun, so you have a little extra time to play with. It also probably means that the TT will run later too.

  4. I kinda felt like some people went "oh, original, click" for Black Sabbath and El Cucuy. Granted, they'll both prob be badass, but sometimes there's this weird "original is better" mentality that goes on around here.

Confession time: I chose El Cucuy because of the whole calling it thing.. What can I say, I'm only human! :P

Outside of Cucuy, I probably would be the single vote for Walking Dead: No Safe Haven, but more for the Backlot Experience and Scare Zone than the actual maze itself.

And outside of all of the listed mazes, I'm most stoked for the VIP experience. Especially after seeing the pic of Murdy in a dress!

  5. Tip for anyone booking a hotel room for their trip. I just used the Bidding Traveler website http://www.biddingtraveler.com/ to bid/ book my hotel room through Priceline.

Just enter Universal City and your dates, and click Just Priceline Only (this all must be done in Internet Explorer, other browsers don't work).

    On the next screen, choose

    Universal City and

    3.5 star rating.

Enter the recommended bid amounts and follow instructions from there to proceed with Auto Bidding.

I just won our room for the trip - Universal Holiday Inn/ Beverly Garland for 2 nights at $98.00/ night (with option to add more nights at same price) :D

Rack rate for the same room via the booking websites was 122 - 157 /night + taxes.

The other hotel at this star level is the Universal Sheraton, so there's a chance you could win a room there instead. If your offer isn't accepted, just wait 24 hours and then up the bid slightly.

If you bid for a 4 star hotel (and pay a bit more), it will be a room at the Hotel Armano in Burbank.

Also, if you are renting a car for your trip, and are a Costco member, I highly recommend going through their website to rent your car. I have multiple discounts to choose from (AAA, my union, etc.), but booking through Costco is always WAY cheaper, especially if I choose to pick up and drop from the airport locations (dunno why that is, but I digress...).

Anywho, hope this is helpful for someone!

And, with room booked and car reserved, I am fully committed to my dates! See ya there September 28!!! :D

  6. Oh my gosh, final comments... Why do I feel like it's the last day of summer camp and I'm gonna get all teary writing this up?

Good f*n' times, boys & girl! I haven't had this much forum fun.. um, ever! I came out of lurking last year post-spec time and with only a couple of weeks left for HHN 2012. You were welcoming and helpful then - little did I know that was just a small hint at how truly warm, thoughtful, and insanely witty you all are! Thank you for making me feel at home and like "one of the boyz"! I wouldn't want it any other way.

We still got lots to talk about in Tips & Tricks, the Meetup thread, and others - so, I'll see ya there and hopefully, in the fog and in the flesh. *insert sinister laugh here*

I want to close my comments by sharing a couple of tweets I sent to Murdy the day Pumpkin/ Cucuy was revealed:

    "‏@Midtowngirl916 21 Aug
@HorrorNights Just wanted to say Thanks for the great time me & my pals @ HorrorNightNightmares had working the clues this year...
    @Midtowngirl916 21 Aug
@HorrorNights The 2013 spec thread currently has.225+ pgs full of debate, laughs & creative speculation - good times! Thank you 4 that. :)"
And something Murdy tweeted re Pumpkin but truly belongs to ALL OF US: :D
    Horror Nights ‏@HorrorNights 23 Aug
@Midtowngirl916 @ALL OF US Very good detective work !!!!!!

  7. Killer Deal - Sold Out in an hour

All other tix - on sale now!

    Website - up!

    Final 2 Scare Zones:

    Cirque du Klownz

    Scarecrowz

    SZs from the website:

    The Curse of Chucky

Years ago, Charles Lee Ray, "The Lakeshore Strangler," transferred his soul into a toy doll – becoming the pint-sized, merciless killer known as "Chucky."

Now, he's back and he has a personal score to settle. Get ready for a deadly game of hide and seek.

    The Purge: Survive the Night

Once a year, there's a day where law and order become chaos and bloodshed – and murder becomes legal. That day is The Purge and you're here to try to live through it!

Sadistic masked murderers wielding knives and chainsaws are on the prowl to hunt you down. Can you last ‘til dawn?

    Cirque Du Klownz

Bienvenue! Welcome to the elegant streets of Paris, home to the Grand Guignol. Come see the lively clowns perform right before you.

But, beware, they may not be there to entertain you... they may be looking to put you in their next act… the gruesome ending to their horrific show.

    Scarecrowz

Scarecrows were once built to ward off crows and evil spirits. Now they welcome them. A new breed is on the loose!

Tremble in terror as colossal, haunted Scarecrowz tower over you, driven to harvest the blood of the innocent to fertilize their land. They'll take whatever's left back to their fields, limbs and all. Slaughter is now in season.

The Walking Dead: Dead on Arrival

The Walking Dead infestation could not be contained and has spread to the Universal Studios Backlot in Hollywood.

Police and law enforcement dispatched to the urban street sets and movie soundstages have been infected. Hordes of hungry "Walkers" are everywhere. They've been spotted on fire escapes and alley ways. It's become an epidemic. Proceed with extreme caution. And stick together.

  8. The debate about what makes someone a "fan" vs. just a "GP" made me ask myself how I'd make that distinction. This is what I finally came up with:

Putting everything else aside (how many times one has attended, how long they've followed topics surrounding, etc., etc.) it boils down to this -

    Fan

Friend: What d'ya wanna do tonight?

Fan: Are you F*ING KIDDING ME? I've been waiting a week/ a month/ a year to go to Halloween Horror Nights tonight! In fact, why aren't you ready to go??

    GP

Friend: What d'ya wanna do tonight?

GP: I dunno... Heard there's a Walking Dead haunted house or some shit at Universal.. Wanna go check it out?

why is this man in this thread this is a win and EPIC win not a fail lol.

Because we HAVE NO win thread! Lol

It is EPIC win though, glad we agree! :)

  9. Hope this one wasn't posted already:

    [The Purge Scare Zone Announcement]

  10. Sounds like someone confused Insidious with another movie.

    Quote

why is there a " the conjuring " theme

    Quote

ANSWER: Well Kevin, there isn't a Conjuring theme being that it isn't in the event. But thanks for playing

    And we have a winnah...

On the flipside, I love this FB comment:

Anukuare Esi Tsikata Watch, everybody who grew up with El Cucuy in their childhood be like this in the maze

  11. Some people in here remind me of the General Public but I won't say names... I agree with Ferox though. Anyways i'm most excited for our Soundstage house Black Sabbath 13 3D. You saw what Chris Williams can do in a tent house. Now he has an SS... oh the possibilities.

Ah Zero, our little ray of sunshine, don't hold yourself back. Say the names, we'd love to know who you're thinking of.

And if you even dare to try to name me, I'll let you know that #1. that's sexist, and #2. I was playing RE and SH when you were an infant. :P

  12. My most anticipated mazes:

Tied for #1: El Cucuy, Evil Dead, Insidious, Black Sabbath, UMR, Walking Dead, and Walking Dead Terror Tram. :P

Seriously though, I'm excited for each one and think that each will not only have some excellent scares, but other unique qualities and details that make that particular maze stand apart from the others. And I can't wait to see them all! :D

    Edit/ Additional commentary:

I think that Murdy, especially with more input this year from Williams, is starting to make an even more noticeable turn from stacked jump scares to serious storytelling. From what I have read and seen in the vids, environment has always been huge, but the overall storytelling was lacking sometimes in its cohesiveness. I think Murdy's time off (paternity leave) gave him some time away from the "Universal machine" and allowed him to solidify what is important to him (the story), and Williams, gaining some influence due to that time off, would naturally help bring further to the forefront what would be most important to the Artistic Director (environment, mood and effects).

  13. Race update as of 8/25 @ 3:47 pm:

(In my best male racetrack announcer voice)

"El Cucuy and Evil Dead are neck and neck with 9 votes each. Black Sabbath right on their heels with 8. Insidious, trying to stay in the race, but falling far behind the pack with a 3. And both Walking Dead mazes will be headed for the glue factory when this is over as neither has made it out of the gate....."

    :P
