  1. I used to say bigger, more detailed sets is better than the scare... I think I may have been wrong in that . I love amazing sets but with houses like RE. Its beautiful but the scares just aren't there. I think the huge, sparsely populated vistas kill that one. I think a house needs to be tight and more intimate. Immersive is great. But immersion isn't the only thing that makes a house good.

I think this point explains why House of Horrors was actually my favorite last year (which, from what I've read, puts me in the minority). While the sets were nothing to write home about, the way they went for the scare was perfect. The bursts of air from the Phantom of the Opera when he played the organ and the final scene were clever and got me multiple times - which, considering it was a last minute house, shows that big budget and immersive houses don't always produce the best scares.

While the sets were awesome this year and I enjoyed them, it was pretty formulaic with the scares and I could see most of them from a mile away (except for Afterlife since I was so disoriented).

  2. Wow - what an excellent performance put on by so many scareactors. Really impressed with all the hard work!

My best scare of the evening (Saturday, September 21st) came from Havoc: Derailed. After walking by the woman and the big guy in the cage, the officer "shot" me and I played along and started limping out of the room. I turned around to look for my friends and the big guy had escaped and came to scare the heck out me. Talk about kicking a guy when he's down!

  3. Just about six hours to go until the event goes live. I wanted to get the sentiment out of the way early and say it has been another fantastic 9 months of speculation and discussion. I want to wish everyone a happy haunting season!

Okay, that out of the way, I'm curious about Herschel's barn. Is it packed to the gills with walkers or is a nice burny smelling place to stop and enjoy a beer and hot dog?

I'd say it's neither of those. It's definitely not packed with walkers, but it's not a place you can hang out either. It's really just a quick walkthrough for ambiance rather than an attraction.

  4. Do you think it's better to see the scaremonies or to go in before to the AP pass holder party. I'm going today and I'd like some advice on what to do. Are the scaremonies really worth it?

From what I've seen of it, just do the AP passholder party. It's cool what they're doing, but you can just watch it on YouTube. Get those extra houses in.

  5. Someone on the Orlando United forum pointed out there may be a connection to Daryl's truck that was moved and the opening scene we can expect involving the survivor and some zombies. Since the truck now has (what seems to be) guns under a tarp and a speaker next to it, I think this is highly likely. I guess we'll know for sure tonight!

  6. So, I'm basically jumping out of my skin in anticipation for Saturday night when I'll be heading down with a group of friends for my 4th ever HHN.

Through my time going, I have learned that I have a very specific HHN personality - The Protector. I always seem to be the one who ends up being the first in line and always turning around to point out where the scareactors are hiding. I'm hoping it changes this year, but so far, this is a role I can't seem to shake.

    What's your HHN personality?

  7. If this house is indeed "fairly short" do you think this could be because they want to extend it into the street SZ and need to justify the casting limit? With the street, this would seem like a longer house. Similarly to what they did last year with TWD gauntlet, but you know . . . actually make it work?

I know nothing of what's going on behind the scenes, but I think it's highly unlikely sadly - at least, for the beginning. I could imagine them implementing something like this if they get complaints that zombies everywhere are boring and they need to scramble to do something new.

  8. Do you think we can expect the smell of dead cats in that basement room? There will definitely be a lot of grab scares as fans of the movie are going to be looking at the shelves and be distracted while someone grabs from the wall on the left. An obvious, but effective distraction tactic!

  9. All in all, I'm looking forward to all of the houses this year. And watching Cabin in the Woods and Evil Dead, and re-watching American Werewolf in London only made me more excited to see how they integrate the movies into the houses.

This is something I think that has added a lot to the event this year actually. I'm going with a big group of people and we've been getting together each Saturday to watch these movies and we'll be watching some The Walking Dead and an episode of Grimm about La Llorona this Saturday. There's definitely something to be said about being able to enjoy this with others rather than speculating online about original houses.

Of course, a balance between original and IP is important, but these IPs really have made the hype-building time enjoyable. Though I'm the diehard fan of my friends, they have really enjoyed debating what scenes will make it into the houses and what they want to see.

  10. Simple difference, really. Hollywood gets a scene where a prisoner cuts off the leg of another prisoner who has been bitten. That's a striking image, that works regardless of if you've seen the show or not. Orlando has a zombie "eating" the guts of a person, that comes off more like fellatio.

Glad someone said it! That whole scene looked extremely awkward.

  11. As someone who wants some viable reason to really catch my attention to justify attending, that was really disappointing. I really hope that wasn't their best foot this year.

I truly don't think we'll have to worry about that. I think they probably used this one as the demo as the idea of a Walking Dead house has more GP appeal than all the other houses so of course it would be the one they show to the media who will get it out there.

Dang, is anyone else just getting so pumped about this event though, despite how you may feel about the walkthrough? I feel like we're in for a lot of unexpected surprises.

After seeing all the pictures from the media event last night, has anyone's initial opinion changed on any of the other houses?

  12. I will say that I'm excited to see that it looks a lot more immersive than last year - despite the inherent weaknesses with the zombies themselves. I didn't hear the baby crying in the scene with the dead Lori the first time I watched one of these walkthrough videos and I appreciate that little touch. In addition, I think the ending is quite good and distracting with the sirens and how much is going on.

Overall, I think the sensory experiences of the house will probably help to offset some of the weaknesses.

  13. The one thing I haven't seen that I've been expecting is the poster for the See You Next Wednesday theater. I know they're going to include the set, but I thought it was brilliant that they had posters for it in the movie and then ended up there toward the end.

  14. I'm excited about seeing the contrast of the beautiful set design for this maze against the grotesque (in a good way!) masks. I feel like this will be reminiscent of Gothic that was beautiful to look at, but also managed to have a few great scares. I think this is going to be one of the more surprising houses of the event.
