  1. It does... Says that Classic Cowboy isn't the name of an actor or historical character. But if you read that clue literally, you notice that it says classic cowboy isn't the name. Think of as many famous cowboys or actors as you can... How many do you know with the name "Classic Cowboy?" if you take the hint that way, then it could still be refering to an actor or historical figure without being their actual name. That's a very literal take on that hint, but he has thrown hints out before trying to confuse us and throw us off course.

It looks like It says "...of an actor or a historical figure" to me. You sure?

I also noticed something interesting about his updated hint about the countries... The mazes are set in 2 countries, with three taking place in the same country. Now if you take it at face value, that would mean that one maze is more abstract and doesn't take place in any country at all. Or he may have simply worded it to cause a little confusion.

  2. I'd like to give some clue into classic cowboy. Since we now know its a fictional character, we can identify some of the most notable fictitious cowboy characters in film history. One notable character who was featured in a few films and was portrayed by many actors is Rooster Cogburn (true grit). A film was made for tv called true grit: a further adventure in the seventies featuring the character which was written by the same screenwriter as the Amittyville Horror. Valid point?

I would say yes if we weren't pretty much certain "Classic Cowboy" is The Walking Dead... Every clue points there, and Classic Cowboy would point to Gary Cooper who was a famous actor know for his cowboy roles in western movies. He was also Andrew Lincoln's main source of inspiration for his character of Rick Grimes.

  3. Yup, many of there past Albums have had some horror themes/elements to it... i was trying to think outside the box with that one haha :-P

    Here's a stretch!

Clint Eastwood directed a film titled "Hereafter." "Poltergeist" is about spirits that have passed on.

I found something on Halloween-Blues with Clint acting in a Poltergeist parody, also.

Everything seems to be pointing to Poltergeist to me. Personally, that's what I HOPE it is. It would be VERY different from the usual slasher fare and could be VERY scary. As fun as the first TCM maze was, and as much as I want it back, I want that Poltergeist maze more.

Oh and welcome JCmoney! I think that's a reasonable clue.

I would love a Poltergeist maze! I never really realized (or simply didn't remember, I haven't seen Casper in years!) that his cameo was a parody of Poltergeist. Makes we want go watch Casper now :-P

  4. This is gonna be the biggest stretch of all. I agree with most people's ideas, just don't want to copy them. So instead, I am posting a pretty illogical speculation. If the actor is Burt Reynold's, and the person Murdy toured was Tobe Hooper, the movie would be TCM. Here comes the stretch: Burt Reynold's starred in the Longest Yard. A man named "Sheldon Turner" wrote the screenplays for two remakes. Those two are The Longest Yard, and Texas Chainsaw Massacre. I am digging way to deep, aren't I? There is no way Sheldon Turner is the connection between Burt Reynolds and TCM, right?

Hey, it's no bigger a stretch then my idea of "Carpenter=KISS" theory! LOL

  5. It would have to be either Texas Chainsaw Massacre or Poltergeist. Or perhaps even Funhouse, with some involvement from Eli Roth and his (supposedly) upcoming remake of that film. However, that would NOT match the hint of two amusement parks and no clowns.

Again, here is a short list for the event we've compiled so far:

    The Walking Dead (100%)

    La Llorona (85%)

    Silent Hill (60%)

    Lords of Salem (45%)

    The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (30%)

    Poltergeist (30%)

    Alice Cooper (20%)

    The Exorcist (15%)

    Hostel (5%)

I'd bump Silent Hill down a bit more after the 8 Ball answers he gave about a video game based movie being featured... all negative answers.

On another note, and it is probably just coincidence yet again (And yes I know, the hint is about the ACTORS career) But Clint Eastwood's son is staring in the upcoming TCM.

Burt Reynolds Also stared in a film called Hooper... again probably just coincidence... Or John is just reallllllly trying to make it hard on us lol.

  6. I'm pretty damn sure one of the other people in that entourage was either Tobe Hooper or Rob Zombie.

Found a news article one dread central.com. It was Tobe Hooper. The maze they toured was HOTC. Here is the exert from that article:

"An understandably genre-centric crowd, those in attendance included "True Blood"’s Mariana Klaveno, actor Tom Malloy (The Alphabet Killer), Bridget Marquardt of "The Girls Next Door", Courtney Gains (Children of the Corn), Caroline Williams (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2), Jamison Newlander and Chance Michael Corbitt (The Lost Boys) and director Mike Mendez (The Gravedancers), as well as Derek Mears (Friday The 13th redux), Tyler Mane (Michael Myers from Zombie’s Halloween films), Christopher Williams and Bill Moseley (The Devil’s Rejects, Rogue River), who along with this writer and Tobe Hooper took a personally-guided (by Halloween Horror Nights creative director John Murdy) tour of Rob Zombie’s House of 1000 Corpses: In 3D Zombievision maze just following the festivities."

And now a list of all the films Hooper has directed:

So one of those films are what the maze is based on. I'm going with either TCM or Poltergiest... I'll do some digging and see if there are any connections with any of this factors he listed and those films.

  7. Ok so John just (Finally!) updated with new hints on Quigley...

Time to revisit the code name for maze # 5 "Quigley" We know the hint is 1 of the Top 10 all time Quigley box office stars....

We also know the star in question got his start at Universal before he was famous...so here's some movie history for you.....

#1 on Quigley's list is John Wayne, he worked in the prop department at Universal while he was playing football at USC

#2 on Quigley's list is Clint Eastwood, he played a fighter pilot in Tarantula and a Lab asst. in Revenge of the Creature

#3 on the list is Tom Cruise, he had a bit part in the 80's melodrama Endless Love....

#4 on the list is Bing Crosby, as part of the singing trio The Rhythm Boys, he appeared in King of Jazz (filmed in stage 28 in 1930)

8 on the list is Burt Reynolds, he was in the TV show Riverboat in 58, that set was still by the Black Lagoon when I started at Uni

So those are the stars, something (or some THINGS) about their career is the hint to maze number 5. One more hint to come....

The director of this film the maze is based on was part of a horror entourage I escorted through the mazes two years ago...they included...

That maze tour included Tyler (Michael Myers), Derek (Jason Voorhees), Bill (Chop Top\Otis) and Sid (Captain Spaulding).

Also should correct some previous clues that have changed, mazes this year are set in 2 countries, 3 are the same country

So there we are! guess we have some more to go on for Maze 4!

  8. Found a possible (although again it is a stretch) link between Burt Reynolds and The Lords of Salem. Ernest L. Thomas is one of the stars or The Lords of Salem. In the 70's he stated in the hit tv show What's Happening. At one point, the show was almost cancelled, and rumor has it Burt Reynolds, who was a big fan on the show, began calling the producers to try and get the show to stay on the air. Again, that is a big stretch, but though, hey, might as well explore every possible lead :-)

  9. He answered one of questions about a theme south of the US... Got a "ask again later" response. It's wasn't a no, so I guess my thoughts on La Llorona are still intact haha

So I did a little digging an found something possibly of interest about Maze 3. So after the 8 ball, we might have to throw out the Silent Hill idea. But could maze 3 be the return, or maybe a sequel to Alice Cooper? One of Alice Coopers long in development cd's and possibly even a broadway show is about... The seven deadly sins. Coincidence?

  10. If you are in the book for Murdy's codename contest, you have a chance to win a behind the scenes tour of one of the mazes.... IF your guess was correct, of course...

Ohhh! I like the sound of that! :-D *Pushes self into research overdrive* I wil figure them all out if it kills me!

Update: got a reply to my tweet! Here's what he said: @LeoLiffrig No...I should probably correct that.

Let's see if he does in fact update those hints for us :-)

  11. I refuse to look up more on Quigley until I get more clues. It's pointless to even try at this point. Same goes with Carpenter.

You guys could always do my tactic. Everytime after he opens the window (and if he said people were put in the book), search "horrornights" and you'll find all the tweets sent to him. Copy them and weed out the good answers. That narrows it down by quite a lot, actually.

I agree with the Quigley... I'm taking a break from that one. Every time I think I'm onto something, I bump into something that invalidates it. Like today, I discovered that the Gorillaz have a song called Clint Eastwood, and the music video has homages to so many Zombie movies (Resident Evil, Braindead) and even Michael Jackson's Thriller music video. But I think the chances of them doing 2 zombie mazes (Walking Dead is pretty much a sure thing now) is pretty much zero. We need at least one more really good hint to help narrow it down.

On another note, I tweeted John about those hints I thinks might not be 100% accurate anymore. I'm sure he won't give a straight answer and will keep it cryptic (if he replies at all lol) but I thought it was worth a shot :)

I also have a question after participating in the code name guessing the other night. What is the whole 'being in the book' thing about? Being new to the HHN Hollywood side, that's a mystery to me lol

  12. I remember Steven King being a big rumor for HHNO a few years back... The year after Carnival of Carnage I believe... That was around the time The Mist came out... The Mist maze would rock... But anyways, back on topic lol...

So maze 4 is driving me crazy!!! The only Clint Eastwood connections I can make so far is Creature From The Black Lagoon ( which it can't be because John said it was based on something never done at HHN and Creature had it's own maze in like 1996 or something) Casper (a little too family friendly) and the final Dirty Harry ( delt with a murders surrounding a horror movie in production if I remember correctly.)

With Burt Reynolds, I have The X-Files ( he guest starred in an episode) a made for tv movie Frankenstien and Me, Deliverance and the Twilight Zone. Which we had more to help narrow it down.

  13. Remember the whole "property" debate we had quite a few months ago on what really defines such? Just because it is a property does not mean it's not going to be an original.

Well this is true, but John also tweeted the following about maze 5:

Heading out to meet with the creative team behind the Property we are basing maze 5 on.

So it's sounding more and more like its based on an existing property.

  14. Thanks again everyone for the welcomes :-) I must admit, this is the most fun I've had leading up to a HHN event ever! With HHNO, usually most or all of the mazes are originals so it makes it hard to really guess them before they are announced :-).

On another note, I discovered something that could change the way we are guessing. 3 hints we were given are now in question and could be obsolete. Those 3 hints are:

    1. This year's mazes have scenes featuring 8 different animals. 7 are mammals. Some are props/effects. Some are characters.

    2. There are mazes set it 3 different countries, 2 mazes are set in the same country.

    3. There are 2 mazes that feature vehicles bigger then a car.

Now, why are these in question? Because of when they were released. All 3 of those hints were released when maze 4 was still AMOK. AMOK obviously is gone now, replaced by Quigley. But those three hints very well could have been clues to AMOK, or they couldn't have. And that is the problem. Are there now only 2 mazes taking place in different countries? Or are there still 3 countries, but no longer 2 in the same country? Or did this hint not apply to AMOK and that clue is still very much valid? Is there only now one maze with a vehicle bigger then a car?

So you see the problem with those hints now. They might have once been really good hints, but now they are filled with uncertainty...

  15. Carpenter = Halloween = Trick 'r Treat. Until I have further clues, I see why not!

I actually never saw that tweet from John (or maybe I forgot) so... HALLELUJAH!!! No return of AC (or at least I hope).

I also forgot to say welcome to HNN Stitch_101. So far, you've been a very valuable member of the speculation team!

Thanks! I'm glad to be here :-) I'm actually a transfer from Orlando. Grew up with HHNO, but now living in San Diego and am excited to see what HHNH has in store!

Carpenter = Halloween = Trick 'r Treat. Until I have further clues, I see why not!

Ohhhh see that was a much simpler connection then mine, and one I like a whole lot more lol! I've been at it for hours researching possibilities for maze 4... I have a few leads but want to check a few more things out first. I'll have my thoughts on it posted tomorrow! :-)

Ohhh and for anyone that is on John is about to start a code name contest on twitter!

  16. Please excuse me for skipping maze 4... That one is driving me crazy and I needed to take a break from researching it for a bit. I think in my off time I might have a lead on maze 5!

Maze 5 - at this time, with no other clues to guide me other then Carpenter and a few coincidences I have noticed (I plan on changing my line of research here if given new clues), I am heavily leaning towards maze number 5 being based on KISS. After the success of last years Alice Cooper maze, it wouldn't be completely crazy if this was in fact a possibility. The only real clues we have is that it's a new property to HHNH and that the title of a John Carpenter film is a major hint. My favorite John Carpenter film is In The Mouth Of Madness. One of the most iconic images from KISS is Gene Simmons opening his mouth and sticking out his tongue. So I did a little bit of research on KISS and found out that there new album, entitled Monster, is being released this October. Maybe I'm just crazy, but I'm starting to think this is a good possibility.

  17. Love that seven deadly sins reasoning for maze 3. I can't help but think it's either original or something we haven't seen yet, like Lords of Salem. I don't know, but this is exactly why I decided not to get obsessed with this year's speculation -- just when I think FOR SURE it's something, speculation starts to lead in a different direction.

I like how we now do know HoH is not apart of the codenames though. He implied work was to be done on it (along with the scarezones) so I'm lead to believe it WILL get an overlay of some sort this year. I'm also guessing it'll be original or based on a Universal film. With not much enthusiasm toward it, my guess is original or he's keeping the overlay very light. Why else wouldn't he put a codename on it?

The Smiths - Based on a theme (on the survey)

Dante - Based on an artistic creation

Classic Cowboy - Based on a property

Quigley - Based on a movie

    Carpenter - Not sure

    HoH - Not sure

Looking at this, it appears we'll probably have only ONE maze based on a film. While The Smiths and Carpenter could very well be the return of AC and LL, with Cowboy looking like it'll be based off a TV show, Dante looking more and more to be original and HoH being the HoH; this year could be VERY different from what we've known HHN to be in the past. But would there really be 3 original mazes in one year, 2 of them returning? And one maze taking a risk on using a TV show? And Quigley being a last minute replacement with the HoH having zero pull-in power? Doesn't seem like much to market on...

Ah, but I also forgot he mentioned that the Terror Tram is based on a property as well. Hm.

I think it's safe to say that Carpenter isn't the return of Alice Cooper. Just before announcing the code name, John tweeted the following: "Maze #5 had a last second change of properties, found a new one we've never done at HHN. Very cool property. Concept design starts next week."

So Carpenter should be something completely new to HHN

  18. Ok guys, I think I may have cracked Quigley. I'm about 85-90% sure it's The Hills Have Eyes, the other percent would be TCM. Since it was noted that Clint Eastwood and Burt Reynolds were fired on the same day, I began to look up both of them starting with Clint. I didn't find anything interesting so I looked up Burt Reynolds. Reynolds stared in the film Deliverance, this film was a very high point in his career. The movie is about 4 men who take a trip to the backwoods, only to run into a town filled with inbreds. They are then attacked by a group of inbred hillbillies and tortured (one is even raped)....sound familiar.Murdy said that Quigley was a very well known film, more than Amok. THHE fits that. This would also match the hint about two mazes having vehicles bigger than cars.

As much as I would LOVE a Hill Have Eyes maze, I think that's stretching the clue a little thin. With that logic, it could also be Wrong Turn, another film with almost the same premise.

  19. Oops haha... I've been lost in research so much stuff is blending together. Thanks for correction, I fixed it in my post :-)

So now my thought on Maze 3

Maze 3 - So I started here by looking up possible links between Silent Hill and the clues provided. I see where some aspects fit:

Cotton candy smell - amusement park featured in sequel

Florence Nightingale - Silent Hill Nurses

Silent Hill's homage and inspiration drawn from Dante's Inferno

I also found out that the Silent Hill sequel coming out this fall is produced by Lionsgate (Open house is the US distributor) which could fit DTH's observation that Lionsgate has had a property featured every year for the last few years.

But I also came across some thing that make me believe that the maze is in fact not a Silent Hill themed haunt.

First we know it is inspired by Dante's Inferno. Throughout Inferno, as well as the Divine Comedy itself, the seven deadly sins are a stand out theme.

We also know dutch painter Hieronymus Bosch is an influence of the maze as well. One of his more famous paintings is "The Seven Deadly Sins and the Four Last Thing." We know that Dante and Inferno won't be in the name of the maze, but the letter D will be, so it could be possible it could be called Deadly Sin's for example.

Now to get to the items that John said he googled while designing the maze:

motivational art - Sloth (laziness, lack of motivation)

Liposuction - Pride (vanity in the way one looks)

Las Vegas Buffet - Gluttony (I think this one explains itself) and could also have a tie with greed... Why specify a Las Vegas  buffet? And what US city personifies greed more then Las Vegas?

Florence Nightingale - Lust (Florence Nightingale effect or syndrome is when a person in a caregiving capacity like a doctor or nurse falls in love with or becomes sexually infatuated with someone they are caring for)

Vargas Girl - Envy ( Vargas was famous for pin up girls, women who were the male idea of the perfect woman)

Animal Hoarding - Greed (again, I think rather self explanatory)

Now my only bump with this line of reasoning is the Franklin Expedition. The remaining sin is wrath, and I'm not sure how the Franklin Expedition would refer to wrath.

Now lastly we have the scent of cotton candy. While cotton candy is usually associated with amusement parks or circus's, in reality it could be used in MANY different ways in a maze. Possibly featured in a scene of Gluttony (which would probably ruin my appetite for cotton candy for the rest of my life) or, if this is a semi original maze could be used in any number of scene's John can think up.

Now I know it's also been said that this is based on an existing artistic creation. That could mean a movie, a tv show, a video game, a book, a song, or even a painting. The seven deadly sins have had a big impact on culture and artistic creation for hundreds of years, so take your pick of one that the maze could be based on.

So in conclusion, while there is some evidence to suggest Silent Hill, I think the evidence is far more strongly in favor of a "Seven Deadly Sins" maze.  That's what I'm putting my money on.

  20. As far as the Dick Smith creation... One of his lesser know films he worked on is called "Ghost Story." Check out some of the creatures he created for it... I could see them fitting into the La Llorona theme very easly.

    And now for Maze 2

Maze 2 - So general thoughts on this is The Walking Dead, and I agree. Firstly the NFL team that has never won a super bowl= Atlanta Falcons. Atlanta is the primary location of at least the first season of The Walking Dead. So that's one connection. Secondly, actor Andrew Lincoln has said that one of his biggest influences for his characters of Rick was Gary Copper's performance in the western "High Noon." Gary Cooper was well know for his western films, which would match how John sorta changed his hint from classic cowboy to famous cowboy.

Now onto the song... This was the tough one, but I think I finally narrowed it down. I believe the song he was hinting at is R.E.M's 1987 hit "It's The End Of The World As We Know It." It was one of 2 of REM's songs to break into the top 100 during that year, though the other topped higher. The song mention's Leonard Bernstein, a famouse composer who died in 1990. The song was alsoffer tired in episode of 8 of season 6 of Family Guy when Peter has a stroke, as well as the 3rd episode of The Simpsons during it's 13th season called Homer the Moe.

Edit: Almost forgot 2 things!!! Firstly, in the cheat sheet, for maze 2, you have a clue wrong. The clue is actually that there is a character who shares a name with one of his cats (Gracie, Maggie, Hiedi.) Maggie is a character in The Walkig Dead. Also, the RV would match the hint of a vehicle bigger then a car in 2 mazes.

Ok, again that was a mouth full... So I guess in conclusion we can assume "Classic Cowboy" is "The Walking Dead." That was a much harder one to crack then the first... Let's see how I far with maze 3...

And a bit of news from John on twitter. He posted the following: "Finished the treatment for maze #4 (code name Quigley), this one is film based. Gonna be a unique casting challenge. On to HOH, scarezones."

Not a whole lot more info to go on for that maze... It's going to prove tricky to crack.

  21. Wow I'm behind on my HHN gossip... I guess I'll just jump in with m thoughts on this years clues so far. And FYI I'm goin on the clues that are provided in The Code Name Cheat sheet, so I may have missed other hints not posted there.

Maze 1 - I see The Exorcist and The Polergiest seem to be the favorites for this maze, but in my opinion all the clues seem to be pointing to the return of La Llorona. The clues pointed to the song "Suffer Little Children'" and as we know the legend of La Llorona is about a woman who drowned her children. La Llorona was on November's survey, as I remember (I could be wrong, I no loger have a copy saved) And would also fit the clue that there are mazes set in 3 different countries, as it is set in Mexico.

Now my opinion on the idea the it's either The Exorcist or Poltergiest. I can see where everyone came to the conclusion based on the hint about Dick Smith... But It seems to me that people are taking "a character inspired by a Dick Smith creation" to mean "A maze based on a film worked on." This clue, in m own opinion, means nothing more than there is a character inspired by his work, possible an homage to The Exorcist. Then again I could very well be wrong lol.

Wow, that was longer then I expected... Ok goin to do some digging into maze 2 for a bit... Let's see what I can come up with.
