With Texas Chainsaw Massacre rumors circulating lately, where could they do this house? Wasn't the Disaster! queue the only place chainsaws could be used other than the streets? I was under the impression that the enclosed nature of soundstages and sprungs were off limits for them. Maybe another queue? M.I.B.?

That's a good assumption. TCM doesn't require sets so vast that it would need an SS or the parade, and they can make the MIB (or even E.T.) queue work as well as Disaster's did. Yes, they've done it already. But to be fair, it's been 9 years, and there's only a very small percentage of attendees who even saw the first house, so it wouldn't matter much. I really enjoyed the 07 house and it's been long enough for me not to fret over it returning.

Bioshock 1 is a PERFECT theme and I am really surprised they haven't done a full fledged IP house based on it. Still, characters could be left out of the picture and just theme the house to an underwater city in ruins. The old music is a must though. I just wish they would do it with the IP because I would love to see a life size Big Daddy with a massive drill coming at me!

I think the closest we'll get to Bioshock is Saws N Steam from 2011. The only 2 video game IPs with enough mass draw to pull in big crowds are Resident Evil and Silent Hill, and both were done to mediocre or bad reviews. I don't anticipate them going back to the video game world, except to maybe do RE again, as Mike has said he would like to give it another try someday.

I just really hope we don't get a WD house this year.

I want a year without zombies for a change.

    [/quote]

This is what I want. Whatever year ends up being the first year without TWD (which could very well be this year), I want absolutely NO zombies. None in the streets, no house based off them, none. A 100% break from zombies is exactly what the event needs.

AWIL is the only "literal direct" repeat Orlando has ever done. Not like it matters because the tweet is in reference only to Hollywood (where literal direct repeats use to be fairly common but are far less so now).

As it stands, even if the tweet applied to the East Coast it doesn't tell Orlando anything we don't already know. I still say, with confidence, that TWD will in some capacity be one of our 9 houses.

I have to disagree. TWD wasn't supposed to happen in Orlando last year AFAIK, and it was received very poorly last year. It's been FOUR years, at an event that doesn't bring back an IP for two years in a row, let alone more. I'm not going to pretend the show's losing steam, because it's not even close to that point yet, and likely won't be for another 3-4 seasons. But as far as HHN goes, I've a feeling we've reached that point. If I end up being wrong, whether it's TWD or FTWD, I will eat my words and not be terribly surprised. I won't even be mad. Just disappointed, but at the end of the day Universal's going for what makes them the most money, and that's not something I have a say in.

As far as TV shows go, Ash vs. Evil Dead is the only one I'm anticipating. And even then, I'm only anticipating something ED related, not specifically Ash. Could be Army of Darkness for all we know.

Some tidbits from the HHN Hollywood Q&A on Twitter last night:

    2. No direct repeats or "back by popular demand" mazes this year

    6. Jurassic Park queue maze has already been designed and teased as an absolutely "killer" maze

    9. There is one maze that Murdy is "absolutely afraid to design"

    2. That was worded carefully, as to not say no returning IPs, I'm sure. This could be to not reveal there is at least one returning, or to not reveal none are returning just yet.

    6. Killer? Obviously FvJ. ;)

    9. Hmm. I'm starting to get the feeling that at least part of the lineup this year isn't as obvious as we think.

  5. 2 hours ago, zombieman said:

Knotts is very different.  Historically, their set quality has been Howl O Scream level.  but in the past few years, the new mazes (gotta call them mazes on the west coast) have been excellent quality - approaching Universal level.  Like HoS, Knotts is one of those places to visit once every 5 years, as they repeat.  So I think someone who has never been would be very impressed.  You should definitely do it, Ecto.  Make a weekend trip of it.

I never really bought the whole "Universal is movies" or "Universal uses IP to stand out" thing.  I think Murdy is huge on IP because he loves schmoozing with the celebs and loves IP.  If USH was to hire Michael Roddy or transfer Mike Aiello to Hollywood, I bet HHN-H could switch to all-original content and still sell out most nights.

I've never actually been to HHNH or Knott's, but I must say their Paranormal maze last year looked utterly spectacular. I would almost compare HHNH's set quality to Howl-O-Scream's, which has gotten considerably better. AvP looked impressive, but other than that, I can't remember a maze from the last 5 years that had sets anywhere near on the level of even the mediocre Orlando houses. (Keep in mind this is based off videos of Hollywood, so not a completely fair judgement)

HHN on either coast are insanely popular. Would they stay popular without IPs? Absolutely. Would they stay AS popular without IPs? Absolutely not. Plenty of people come to HHN because it's always fun, but a lot come mainly for the IPs, and a very large majority of them wouldn't have even started coming if a certain IP wasn't there at some point. TWD is obviously the biggest one, and both events can attribute a LOT of their financial and attendance success to the IP. In a way, TWD was beneficial and harmful to the events. Is it time for it to finally move on? Doesn't look like it in Hollywood, but in Orlando? We'll likely know in a month or 2.

This was my exact thought when I first read it, but the USO tweet actually stated that a new maze was being rolled out to (design) teams.  So on second read, the tone came across differently.

I read "rolled out to design teams" as the IP was handed to them to make a maze out of. Could be totally wrong, but that's just how I read it.

I despise this. It sounds like Hollywood wanted an IP, they got it, and then management forced it on Orlando.

We don't always agree on IPs at the event, but that's EXACTLY what this sounds like. Mike's tone was "The team was handed this property today". Murdy's tone was "We got the the rights to an IP we wanted". It is my understanding that this is what happened with TWD last year. UOR wasn't gonna do it, but Murdy wanted it and they were forced to share it. Praying this doesn't happen again, as I'm personally not expecting TWD this year at all. Wouldn't be surprised to find out I'm wrong though.

Also, on the topic of how many houses, there's no reason why they can't still do 9. Twister being demo-ed doesn't affect queue line space to the point that they can't still do 4 SSs, and there's some usable locations for house #9. Curious George, E.T. extended queue, 2nd Parade house, 3rd Tent. They're not ideal, but definitely possible. MiB would be the most ideal, if they can make it so they're able to do it. I'm expecting 5 IPs 4 originals like last year.

When it comes to Leave it to Cleaver, H.R Bloodengutz, and any other house they haven't sequeled the shit out of. I think leaving it as a one hit wonder is for the best.

Agreed. Certain houses just do not call for sequels, especially ones that were only good due to certain circumstances. HAVOC is the best example of that. 2010's was nothing special, but the cast was so energetic, it made it popular and successful. That's why the sequel, which actually featured better scenic imo, was not rated as high. Mutant soldiers is not a topic that calls for several houses (or another room in M&M -.-). Cleaver is another one that doesn't hold much for a sequel (and it wasn't popular enough to warrant one anyway). Same with houses like Winter's Night, Orfanage, Dollhouse, etc.

Then there's certain houses that BEG for sequels, such as Nightingales, Catacombs, Scary Tales, etc. Houses that can be explored in new realms and settings. Houses that have a storyline that could actually be continued. Other than those specific (and very few) houses, I'd rather all the great originals stay as one hit wonders, and have A&D continue to bring out great, fresh ideas. Because that's what they're best at.

So this kinda makes me feel we are on the right track with speculating if we are are right the one "p" is in Krampus and still leaves conjuring, Walking Dead, and FVJ also if correct means Purge is Terror Tran again.

    image.jpeg

That's what I was thinking. One P in the maze slate does not include the TT, and with the new movie coming out, it would make sense to take the cheap route (they own the IP, all costumes/props, not much to it) and promote that as "new".

  10. 22 hours ago, Legacy said:

And two parks is still incredibly unlikely. The Jimmy Fallon construction only effects queue layout which is easily solved. There are three possible replacement locations for the Disaster house not including sound stages (MIB, Parade 2, Sprung 3). IoA won't shut down early the first year of Kong and Hulk2 because it won't need to.

T.H.I.S. I've been saying this since November. They're not going to want to shut down both parks at 5 that many days in Sept./Oct. with 2 new rides opening, especially with how popular the resort has become. Losing 1 house and 1 queue location isn't a big deal. There's plenty of spots for house #9 (money's on MiB overflow), and rerouting the SS queues isn't all that difficult. I don't expect 2 parks at all.

I do not agree with your stance on scarezones, unless you have actual info telling you otherwise. I don't think they will get rid of the actors in the streets. I do see where you're coming from, and if it does eventually happen I will be surprised but will understand it. I just don't see it getting to that point though.

This may seem like a stretch, and may never happen considering who owns the IP, but I would love a Ghostbusters house. It would not be a particularity scary house, but it would be visually cool. Plus if anyone really wants a 3D house, this would work.

It was rumored at some point, and I don't think obtaining rights would be a problem for the IP. I personally don't want it, but I wouldn't be bothered by it happening.

I hope founded rumors don't circulate. I'd rather them keep a tight leash on everything and really up their website, fan presence.

This is something I really miss. I only became as big a fan as I am during the 2010 season, so I only really experienced 2 fleshed out websites, and they weren't even the best ones. Having games, backstories, slow reveals to the "big reveal" at the end of August for the entire event was a lot of fun and built up hype. Last year was the first time since 2011 I was excited for a midnight reveal of the event. Even though 4 houses had already been announced, the originals/shows/streets hadn't been, and it just felt like the Icon days again. I know how unlikely it is at this point, but it's one of those fan service things that we all cherished and would LOVE to see happen again.

Also, if any of the newer fans were wondering what kinds of websites we're talking about, horrornights.be has a bunch of the past websites in tact with games and everything. They're a whole lot of fun to check out, especially 05's and 08's.

I have wished for years that they would have Horror Makeup during HHN.  I absolutely LOVE that show.  I never get tired of it.  It just amuses the hell out of me.  I'd love to see it done and tweaked a bit for HHN - add a bit more to the movie clip part and maybe even tie in some of the special effects makeup to what you might see in the streets or houses that year.  I am kind of a geek about special effects and makeup and the design process, and anything someone wants to tell me about how it works - I'll eat that up with a spoon.

How many years ago was it when they had the show in AA with the guy who was the magician?

I think Brian Brushwood had show in that theater in 07.

With Beetlejuice gone, that is they're only option for a second theater show. Add something in a show in Mel's area and open HMU and that'd be wonderful for eating up crowds.

If you don't like something because you're sensitive to it then do not go, do not try to create a public backlash to shut it down.

It's disappointing to hear some of you being this sensitive.

That said, it's worse that I hear support for incredibly mediocre IPs. God forbid they have to use an IP then at least do something that hasn't been done before in the typical sense.

    * Purge = we've seen it, twice, let it go.

    * TWD = we've seen it, let it go.

    * Ash vs Evil Dead = we've seen it, let it go

    * Krampus = we've basically seen it over the years (Home for the Holidays, Bloodngutz), let it go.

    * Hitchcock = we saw Poe's house, which was mediocre, and Hitchcock's movies will not translate well to a house (they're dramatic, not horror for the most part). Let it

All of these are garbage properties. At least try to bring something in that'd be pretty cool to see if they're doing an IP at all.

I'm with you on wanting new IPs if we have to have em, and I honestly only see 2 of these even having a chance this year, unless they decide to use the Hitchcock concept they supposedly have. I'm not believing TWD is back until I see it, and Krampus doesn't hold much stock for me on this coast. I'm iffy on The Purge. It'll be relevant, they have literally everything they need already, and the pile of shit that was last year's house was actually successful, so a sequel would be greeted by the GP. But will Marketing actually wanna do it again? I feel like the answer is yes. Ash is entirely dependent on whether Mike and the gang wants to do it, I think. No reason why that property would be pushed onto them by Marketing, and I don't see why they would tell them no over it, so if they want it, we'll likely see it.

I'm curious to see how many originals we see this year. I feel like we will see 5 originals and 4 IPs this time, but I fear that may just be wishful thinking.

  15. "I will only reveal code names for some of the mazes (because I don't want you to know how many mazes we're doing). Get it? Got it? Good."

I think everyone just skipped over this tweet once the Wisconsin code name was posted. If the number of mazes had stayed at 6, this would not be necessary. There's proof of at least 7, imo.

He never said it was Hollywood exclusive either, so it could be a shared IP.

I think we'll be back up at seven, personally. In my eyes, we never really went above six houses as the House of Horrors overlay never really was a "real" house.

And TWD will serve as the new HoH, literally. A year round attraction that'll feature minimal changes as the seasons progress. There will be absolutely no reason to not 6 100% new houses each in addition to this. Hell, this attraction's budget is totally separate from HHN, so there's no reason why they can't build 7 new houses in addition to this. But I'm sure they'll justify it by having another dance show.

  17. On 1/5/2016 at 10:18 PM, Dead Inside said:

Assuming there's 6 houses again, it's easy to see why it's locked so early:

The Purge and The Conjuring are shoe ins

FVJ comes to Hollywood a year after Orlando a la Halloween

TWD comes back because Murdy wants it

Krampus was a success for Universal and Murdy has experience with Dark Christmas

    That leaves just one left.

Ash or Army of Darkness. Just makes sense to me. I also really do not think they'll stay at 6 houses. Last year's crowds per night seemed lower than 2013/14 (this is unconfirmed to me; just an observation, and is no way factual), but I blame that on 4 repeats, an IP no one gave a shit about, and a comedy that's 2 years old. If they do just FvJ, that'll warrant a big enough crowd on it's own for a 7th house. I say TWD will open with HHN and count as the 7th house, as it'll be separate from HHN's budget to build, and then just stay open.

And this is really just wild wishful thinking here, but I would love to see Pink Floyd's The Wall made into a house. I know it would never happen, but I can't help but think about how amazing it could be. The animated segments of the movie have plenty of crazy looking characters to use, the soundtrack is already written, and I can't help but imagine how creepy it could be to walk down a hall made entirely of those iconic white bricks with that equally iconic riff playing on an endless loop.

Again, this is just blind wishful thinking on my part. I think we all enjoy a little armchair imagineering once in a while.

    1. I'd love a Nightingales Civil War house. And to my knowledge, the subject has not been touched.

    2. YESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYES. I've wanted that for YEARS and Murdy has said he wants to do it, but the rights are tricky to obtain, as two separate parties own the music and the name. Roger Waters owns The Wall, but David Gilmore owns the rights to the name Pink Floyd. Maybe they would be able to simply call it "The Wall" based of the classic album from the 70's and not have to say Pink Floyd. They can call it whatever they want, it just needs to happen. Lol

Now that I think about it, i honestly don't see any sequels for the next 4 years

I definitely do. If anything, Nightingales 2 will happen, unless they abandoned the desire of making that a franchise. Once IPs took over 50-60% of the lineup, it left A&D a lot less room to stretch out their creativity in the original content, so in most cases they chose brand new houses over sequels. HAVOC2 was done because it was cheap and easy for it's location, and last year was an anniversary year, so everything was a sequel practically (Though RUN, BC and Asylum were all fairly original save a scene or 2 in each). Other than that, all originals since 2012 (only 12 -.-) have not been sequels. I believe we will see 4 IP and 5 original next year. So I think we will see 1 sequel.

Because the suggested IPs are terrible. There is no evidence the IPs made the event more popular, ever.

Most IP houses I've gone to have their scares well known a mile in advance.

    1. That's straight up denial, dude. The fact that houses like FvJ, Insidious, Halloween etc. broke 120-180min waits every night, when none of the originals last year broke 90 min on the busiest of nights is clue enough (I know wait time doesn't usually refer to popularity, but in this case it does). A LOT of people started coming to the event when they saw TWD, and Silent Hill, and Cabin, AvP, Insidious, etc. on the billboards. The amount of merch sold due to the IPs is insane. And so on and so forth. To say there's no evidence proving IPs are making the event more popular is bullshit.

    2. That's you. I get you found the event to be a lot better 04-10, and that's your opinion and you're entitled to it. But you have to remember a lot of us on here see houses a lot differently from the 14-34 year olds that go once a year, if that, and see 3-5 houses in a night. Half of them intoxicated or fully trashed on top of it. This is the crowd the IPs are for. These are the people that saw the "water effect" in TWD 4.0 and thought it was neat. Hell, these people made The Purge way more popular than it deserved to be. We are the .1% of HHN attendees, and chances are most of the event is going to be catered to the 99.9% of individuals who give them the most amount of profit.

That being said, last year did seem like they significantly tried to boost the scare factor in comparison to the last few years, and I commend them for it. 2014 was by far the least scariest year I've attended since 05, no matter how good the houses looked. Last year gave me some great scares, and a lot of people viewed Insidious as one of the most intense houses they've done ever (I don't agree, but I digress).

I'm with you in wanting more original houses, and I mean ORIGINAL. Uncharted topics and such. But since it's so early, with nothing to speculate upon yet, all we can do is say what we would personally like to see, and give our best guesses as to what we might actually see.

  21. Confident guesses: FvJ, The Conjuring (these are both pretty much guaranteed at this point, imo)

Solid guesses: TWD (more evidence for Hollywood to do it than Orlando, which I'm still seriously doubting), The Purge (new moive, hasn't been a maze in USH yet, Uhni picture, already have costumes and masks), something Evil Dead related (Ash was well recieved and both creative directors are big ED fans), Krampus (for reasons already stated)

Plus an original 7th. Possible Purge TT as well.
