  1. A few of the photos from my most recent batch. In some of these, I'm following the lead of Nick and Mark and attempting to do my own long-exposures. Some of the turned out nicely, others not so much. It's all experimentation.

I'll be uploading more each day, so (again) keep checking my Flickr gallery, my Facebook gallery (if you'd like to tag someone), and HHNinPhotographs.

  2. I haven't been asked to leave a scarezone (yet), but I was told that I couldn't "stop a scareactor for a photo." Seeing as how I never "stop" anyone, but I simply ask if I may take a photo (and whether the scareactor stops or not is their prerogative), I didn't think much of it.

It seems to me that consideration is key: scareactors are there to scare. Period. That's what they get paid to do during HHN, so let them do their jobs. In the meantime, stay out of their way and try not to blind them with camera flashes (or autofocus lights). If there should be a moment when the crowd thins a bit, step up and ask (nicely) if you can take their photo. If they say yes, take your photo and let them get back to work. If they say no, move on and don't take it personally (and don't take the photo anyway).

As far as the escorts (or whatever the uncostumed people in the zones are called), they're there to protect the scareactors. Some of them are relaxed, some are overprotective and others are enjoying the brief power trip that HHN gives them. If they give you grief, just move on and come back later. It's not worth ruining your evening when you've got multiple scarezone options (and 8 houses you can enjoy).

A couple of things that I try to abide by:

    - There's a lot of fog this year, which makes camera flashes nearly unusable. You're just going to blind yourself (and everyone around you) if you're trying to use a flash in a foggy zone.

    - Some of the zones are extremely dark to shoot at night. Instead of using your flash, get creative. Try long-exposure shots (see some great stuff by Nick Chandler and Mark Walter), silhouette shots (see shots like THIS ONE) or even getting to HHN earlier and shooting while there's still daylight.

    - If you're just not getting the shots you're hoping for, brush up on your photography basics. Try some test shots in a dark room at home and play around with your ISO, f-stop and shutter speed.

    - Or, try some new equipment. There are shops that rent camera lenses, bodies, flashes, etc. by the week (some are even by mail!), so you can try before you buy.

Anyway, those are just my own (unsolicited) sentiments on the matter.

As far as photos go, it's been a week or so since I've uploaded anything new. I'm currently working on a big new batch, so I'll be posting them here (and on HHNinPhotographs.com, and on my Flickr page) over the next couple of days.

  3. Grime: Agree with HHNPicman completely. As a matter of fact, he, the Director of Horror and myself were all on the tour together last weekend. The tours move at a pretty slow pace, so stick to the back of the group and snap at your leisure. The guide may give you some playful jabbing (as ours did) when it's time to move on, but they're never pushy. After all, these tours are designed with fanatics like us in mind.

Barbaric Derek: Glad you enjoyed the book! We're 90% through with the book for HHN 19 and can't wait to start work on one for HHN 21. The talent of these HHN photographers is phenomenal, and it's an honor to work with all of them.

Mark: Great shots, as always. Hope to bump into you again one of these FFP evenings.

ZKeeper: Keep up the great work. It's wonderful to see the photos that this year is generating. Very impressive stuff from everyone!

And a couple more shots from my UTH Tour, this time focusing on Nevermore:

And here's a detail that you can't see in the darkness of HHN (and it's hard to make out in the photo, but it's there), but our UTH guide pointed it out. This bookcase is at the very beginning of Nevermore. If you look at the top shelf, the fifth book from the left is called "Sith Happens," written by an author named Maul. Just another inside Star Wars joke by our friends in A&D. Full-size image can be found HERE.

  4. Thanks, Z. I don't have any magic secrets and many of the photographers on this site are much more technically knowledgeable than I am.

That being said, I've found that patience is key. If you see an angle that you think might make a good photo, spend some time waiting for it. It'll happen eventually. And lastly, take a LOT of photos. I typically take between 200 and 450 photos PER NIGHT. Most of them aren't anything special, but you do eventually get some gems.

  5. Thanks, Pumpkin. I'm sure you'll see me again (and again, and again) as the event progresses. Just let me know if I get annoying!

Senortico, I was wearing a white shirt with green/blue plaid-ish pattern. I'll be there tonight, so if you guys see a guy wearing a light blue polo shirt with a backpack on, taking too many pictures, that's probably me. Say hi or tell me to get lost!

Zombass, I've got a couple of pictures of Nightmaze, but they weren't really anything special. It's too dark to shoot without a flash, but with a flash it just looks like a bunch of chain link fence! I'll see if I can do better tonight.

  6. Hey folks!

It sounds like the HNNightmares crew will be broadcasting live from tonight's Advance Screaming preview.

I was inspired by the live broadcast of the TweetUp the other night, and I've decided to give it a shot myself at tonight's Advance Screaming. Not to plug a different site, but I'll be streaming to HHNinPhotographs.com.

A few ways to experience tonight's Advance Screaming:

Click HERE or HERE for the HHNiP live stream.

Click HERE for the HNNightmares live stream.

Click HERE for the HHN Collector's live stream.

Click HERE for live tweets by Attractions Magazine.

Click HERE for live tweets by DesigningtheFear.

Click HERE for live tweets from OrlandoUnited.

As far as photos from the event go, I'll be posting the majority of mine to HHNinPhotographs, but I'll post some of my favorites to this thread.

  7. Howdy folks,

While we're a little less than two weeks out from HHN 21 Opening Night, I figured I'd go ahead and create a topic where we can post event photos and videos.

For those of you who use Flickr to host your images, I've also created a Flickr group that you are more than welcome to join. Click HERE to join the group and add your own shots or just to peruse the gallery.

Can't wait to see your photos!

  8. As many people have discussed in the various forums here, Universal is a business and profit is important in the end. Projects like the LT ARG have a cost to the company, whether it's direct (like a staffing headcount, cost of supplies, etc) or indirect (it takes up mental real estate that could be focused on the "official" projects). One of the interesting stories that came out of the lecture series revolved around the covert origins of that first Terra Cruentas ARG. It sounds like it's taken them several seasons, but the A&D team has finally proven the legitimacy of an ARG to the powers-that-be.

This past year's VIP Lounge and Lecture Series seemed like an experiment to gauge the event's fanatical fanbase. I would have to think that the turnout of the weekly lectures has proven that the numbers of LT fans are high, they're motivated and, importantly, they're potentially profitable. As we've seen with the proliferation of bars, the carnival games and the palm readers, if something is profitable to the company's coffers, it's going to stick around. I can see LT (or something of its ilk) sticking around for a long time, so long as the fans keep coming out and supporting it.
