Well 1) the fact that we actually lost a SZ this year....whats up with that ? and 2) to make matters worst two are repeating SZs !!!! freakz third year around and klownz 2nd! come on lets not make this a trend to repeat with SZ's to. Plus alot of props are missing from freakz so i dont have high expectations for this. It will feel wierd walking through a empty Western Street :/

They could've at least moved a scarezone somewhere between Shrek and the entry to Terror Tram. A scarezone down is laaaaaame but hey, management is trying to save and steal money all at once this year so it's no flippin surprise. At least that's a high traffic area as where Freakz and Zombieville, people will only be traveling through their once (ESPECIALLY since FOL only grants you one access, you have no reason to return to HOTC... and especially since HOTC is an older maze).

Okay, time for the closing statement on speculation! Lots to go through so bare with me here, folks. Let's go in order from when things were announced.

The Thing: We all knew this was coming as it was highly speculated right at the moment last year ended. But it's not a bad thing, as this is a maze I'm sure we ALL wanted and I haven't heard any "meh"s about it yet (except from idiots on FB).

Hostel: Once again, saw this one a mile away and more so when Eli said he wanted to work with HHN. It was also expected because it was gonna be the "Saw" replacement. Now, as new as it's probably going to be, I think it's funny Murdy placed in there when he knew folks would be throwing out the Saw comparisons. And will it repeat next year? Well... here's a thing that not nobody has mentioned on this site yet. Next year, Transformers is coming and it's extended queue will be the Mummy's old extended queue, which, if you did not know, is the home of this beloved venue. So take it all in guys, this is the last time you'll be walking through this area for at least another 2 - 3 years as Transformers is expected to be insanely popular, especially at HHN. So our victory of adding on a sixth maze is very short lived, as I expect we'll be back down to 5 mazes next year.

Alice Cooper: Biggest WHAT THE HELL of all the announcements (maze-wise). Nobody really saw this coming until after the codename was announced. I've yet to be impressed by any of the artwork, unfortunately, as I would love to be proven wrong. Also, this is the home of our newest venue this year and will be the replacement for the lower lot maze next year (look up to Hostel if you missed the bold and in RED font).

House of 1000 Corpses: We had an eerie feeling this would be the repeat. Luckily, it's our ONLY repeat (not counting scarezones). And unfortunately, Murdy has said there will be ZERO change to the maze (now that's something we DIDN'T anticipate while covering the maze construction and wondering if things would be different). It'll be forgotten in the midst of this year's AMAZING line up.

Terror Tram: Scream 4 Your Life: All I can say is YESSSS. Been eagerly waiting for Ghostface to arrive to HHN and he's coming in epic fashion, to take over the Terror Tram. We ALL expected a maze, which unfortunately didn't happen as the rights were only settled for part 4 (which I'd argue could be a maze... just don't know how well it would go over with guests as not too many people saw the movie). I believe Freak was the one who was claiming it'd only be the Terror Tram and he was right and that was hard to believe with all we knew about how HHN worked in years prior.

The Wolfman: Some of you would say, ABOUT DAMN TIME. And I guessed early on after the Oscar win that it would be The Wolfman's time. I just didn't expect I'd be actually right. However, we also knew that it would be shoved into the HoH, which is unfortunate. However, this is the most anticipated maze to go into the HoH.

La Llorona: A fully original maze and it's a GREAT concept. Ofcourse, we're still all "ew" from last year's bad taste from the scarezone.

Scarezones: We had a feeling zombies would show up. Just not sure if it'd be in a scarezone or the Terror Tram. I anticipated clowns but not for them to repeat the scarezone, which is ridiculous if you ask me as last year it wasn't that great. Another return: Freakz. 3 years now. C'mon. The Reapers might be cool, I really don't know yet but at least it's original and at least it's not pigs. And then Scream, which is just the entrance, but to me it really sets the mood for the night so I'm glad they tried to tie in some theme somewhere. At least we know at this point there won't be any clowns or zombies in the Terror Tram this year. I think that's a first where both weren't included.

Now let's talk about management this year... after last year being the most successful, we had a feeling they'd pull some crap with inflation, which is respectfully expected. However, we did not anticipate getting rid of some of the most beloved things us HHN Hollywood fans rightfully loved. The FFP was taken away, then brought back, and given the worst nights ever. Then, FOL pass was limited. Also, Terror Tram was shortened to 9 PM (like seriously, you guys couldn't hammer out a better deal than that?). Sliders were taken away, which is some people's most favorite scares. Drop of a scarezone, presumably to save budget.

HOPEFULLY all these cuts and tweaks are worth whatever it is they're planning but if this year is more of the same stuff as last year and not as epic, then it was simply just a money grab and not a way to get more money back for their artistic expression as we all assumed. Will Terror Tram be getting extra? Will the scarezones get more decor? Will the mazes have better quality? Like, what? What is it that all this money is being wrangled up for exactly? Or is it simply just a business doing business and getting greedy? Is there an in between? I presume greed, I really do, and I hate to say that...

HHN Hollywood for years prior always seemed like a haven. It was COOL. It was VERY fan friendly. All that they offered, REALLY took care of your fan needs. Now, it looks like it's turning into THE MAN. All the things you loved are now being taken away. Instead, now it's about getting your money instead of taking care of you. Before it was "come on in, take a look around, enjoy your stay, what else can I get for you and please come on back." Now, it's "get in, give us your money and get the fuck out - - we don't care how much you enjoy it." For that, HHN has lost a bit of it's cool. It became successful, got greedy and forgot about the people who made it possible to begin with - - like the laid back friend you knew that got famous.

It's just business, at the end of the day, but HHN, we were really counting on you being cool again. Consider me an ashamed parent shaking their head and crossing their arms while looking down at management. Creative did a fantastic job this year and management is just using them. I'm disappointed but what can I say? Hopefully everything pays off and their tactics work and lines won't be as long. But until than, from this prospect, shame on you for becoming THE MAN.

P.S. Happy Birthday, Freakazoid :)

They really aren't saving money on it. The budget for Western was folded into Lower Lot to put more actors down there.

And I can tell you from experience that many, many people walk through French and Baker street multiple times a night. I know you don't really care for scarezones and only experience them when they're in the way of your next maze, but thats not the same for everyone by any stretch of the imagination.

First off, don't try to speak for everyone by giving a general opinion, there could be some that at least enjoyed the concept of her scarezone, and understood the execution of it. Honestly, what in the world were you expecting in that area anyway? It was simple and to the point with the character and her supporting cast and exactly as it should be, subtlety. Not a completely in your face sort of experience, to me it was like watching a living show, the interaction of La Llorona and her children, and then her roaming about trying to find them until the loop continued. Although... I just did not personally understand the existence of that one older man that was around there.

But shame on them? Really?

Yes, Universal Studios is a business and HHN is their product for you to purchase, whether you like the idea or not. It's not there to completely bend over backwards and cater to our every whim and I think they are finally understanding that. If they continue down this road of using other studio properties or even celebrity collaboration like they seem to be proudly proclaiming this time, they will need to continue to up their price to cover for the deals and money that would come with it. They know people will continue to pay more and more, despite how much they moan and complain about it because they have their fans hooked with an experience that they enjoy. That's like going to a casino and complaining to the cashier that you lost X amount of money and the games are "tight" just because you didn't win the jackpot that, in a personal delusion, you were "promised" upon entering yet you continue to withdraw more and more cash to "get it all back". Both are a business established on entertainment, a distraction from our otherwise boring and mundane lives, offering something for a price that we'll pay no matter how high it is.. something we'll keep coming back for and spending on time after time. I understand people are hard to please, but that's just a little ridiculous.

I'm personally usually hurting for money, but I know I'll still find some way to make it to the event.. and I won't complain about it, I know what I got myself into when I started going. I will buy my one-time-per-maze-use FotL pass and I will enjoy my night, as I have last year and previous years before, I enjoy the event even though I don't agree with some of the planning decisions. This year actually looks pretty good to me from what I've been following on FaceBook, and I'll make it even special for me this year because I can't make it to Orlando and take in the Lady Luck (although Casino-free) experience. I enjoy what I can get, and I appreciate it. Sure, I'm a little annoyed that the Wolfman is just an overlay for HoH, or that Saw's younger brother Hostel is replacing it in the lower lot or even that HoTC is making a comeback by "popular demand", but really it doesn't matter in the end. There's nothing I can do to directly or indirectly effect it, and I don't have the idea in my head that the event's higher power actually gives a damn about what I could say. I'll take what's placed in front of me, and I'll only give my opinion on it after experiencing it.

Perhaps there will be a day when Murdy's team will let their completely original creative juices just flow with a majority of original in-house content, and maybe that will be the time when everything isn't hurting by this cruel economic game the world seems to be playing with us and stop pulling our strings. Perhaps then we will see a decline in prices. Until now, they had to lean on properties that the YouTube, FaceBook and Twitter tween. teen, and twenty-something zombies might wanna see with license houses... but now that they're more established in Southern California, they will probably start experimenting more with other original ideas or non-slasher-hacky-slashy movies. Who knows, maybe we could even see an entire event with a completely coherent theme like Orlando has done, maybe even something better, with all original mazes.

But they can take their time on finding their comfort zone, I can wait, and I'll enjoy the ride without spitting in their face for giving it to me a little rougher than I'd like from time to time.

They really aren't saving money on it. The budget for Western was folded into Lower Lot to put more actors down there.

I know you don't really care for scarezones and only experience them when they're in the way of your next maze, but thats not the same for everyone by any stretch of the imagination.

I know I went through those areas multiple times to watch the scareactor and guest interaction, those are always the highlights of the night for me. New York was too busy to just people watch and Lower Lot was just kinda "eh" to hang around in, but Western, French, and Baker streets were prime locations for me to hang out for a while... buuut I probably come off as a stalker to scareactors if I do that. I think a certain Storyteller might've gotten that opinion of me in Orlando, anyway... couldn't help it.

I liked la llorona, for the record. Ive personally never heard anyone say anything positive about it though, not even from gp on facebook. And i have no problem with hhnh acting like an actual company now and they played their cards right... They lured us in with cool concepts like u can come nearly every night or go through mazes all u want ON TOP of the amazing quality product they were already gving. Personally, i never even used those features but i feel for the fans right now complaining and i can totally see where theyre coming from. I just dislike people going "shut up, stop complaining." i was just defending... I guess it was my lawyer instincts coming in haha

and trev, i never said NOBODY will be going through those areas, just that they will be lower traffic than the others.

Well said, Onca! It isn't about greed it's about turning a maximum profit and being able to justify the growth of the event each year. Hollywood lost HHN once partially due to not turning a big enough profit to justify putting it on. Ever since it's ressurection in 2006, HHN has been slowly expanding and tweaking things to impressive effect (remember how small and relatively half-assed that first year back was?). It is obviously a trial and error process and as long as they keep offering a great product I expect the public will keep eating it up. The event does not exist to cater exclusively to the hardcore fans (read: us), in fact despite Murdy's unprescedented level of interaction, we are most certainly the afterthought in terms of the prime demographic that USH is targeting. This is, afterall, the theme park business - they are striving to appeal to the widest audience possible and get as many people through the gates and attractions as possible.

Anyway, on to my musings on this years event:

The Thing - I am beyond stoked for this maze. WWA is arguably the best venue and it seems as if they are really going all out in making the experience emmersive. I expect it to be thoroughly terrifying and mostly can't wait to get a look at the monster and gore effects. Plus, since the movie won't be out (and I have purposefully avoided uprooting any spoilers) the maze itself will serve as a prequel to the original John Carpenter version so while we know vaguely what to expect, it is a totally new story.

Hostel - Although I am not a huge fan of the Hostel films I am very excited to see what they do with them as a maze concept. I anticipate great torture gore gags and at least one chainsaw scare. Plus there is a shadow gag used in the actual facade? That sounds awesome.

Alice Cooper - This is the maze I am probably most excited to go through because it's the biggest unknown. With it being based on the works and on-stage theatrics of an infamous horror rocker instead of an exsisting movie or even an original story, the possibilities are nearly limitless. I expect badass large scale puppetry (or animatronics), seriously cool sound design (Murdy has stated they are using Alice's songs but in the style of a horror film soundtrack) and awesome original monsters (yes, including monsterous versions of the man himself), truly bringing to life the twisted visions of Cooper as channeled by Murdy - unlike the relatively unsucceful Brutal Planet mazes of the late 90s/early 2000s which ultimately failed to really represent the spirit of Alice and his music.

House of 1000 Corpses - This maze was fun last year and I look forward to experiencing it again. Being the only repeat, it's obviously kind of low on my priority list but it still stands as a solid maze and I'm sure it will continue to be popular.

La Llorona - Another maze I am extremely excited about due to the fact that it is an original concept (well, based on folklore) and it allows Murdy and Chris to go kind of crazy in terms of design and concept. I really don't know what to expect out of this and that only adds to my anticipation exponentially. I am, however, expecting USH to knock our socks off with this one, hopefully paving the way for more original content and characters in the coming years. I am okay with keeping Hollywood fairly movie-centric, as I feel that it's sort of "our thing" and I enjoy the fact that it differentiates our event from Florida's. That said, the prospect of more originality in maze design is a great one and a good mix (as we are seeing this year) would be the best ultimate course of action IMO.

The Wolfman - I just can't get all that excited for a HoH overlay (and we shall see how comprehensive the "overlay" actually turns out to be) based on a pretty crummy remake. I am expecting a few cool additions to the scenery and a bunch of solid scares (even though the idea of Vampyr didn't get my blood pumping last year, the scares in the house certainly did) but will hit this house on the way out as I usually do. I am waiting for them to truly surprise me one of these years and perform a full convincing re-theming of the permanent maze, and last year they took some baby steps towards this so hopefully the trend continues. We shall see.

Terror Tram - To me the TT really only started being truly succesful in 2008. 2006 was thoroughly underthemed and underwhelming (with the exception of the marvelously twisted zombie children in the WotW scene), 2007 was improved but was ultimately confused theme-wise (Orlando's Jack Schmidt was shoehorned in and felt wildly out of place), 2008 finally got it right with a fine-tuned theme (that actually made sense throughout the entire attraction) and revamped elements that made the entire experience scarier and more enjoyable. The last two years I feel like Murdy has been trying to live up to 2008 and falling just short - the Saw theme of 2009 was great in theory but failed to tie-in with the actual characters and elements of the walkthrough and last year's Chucky theme provided a very entertaining intro video but still missed the mark in terms of providing a cohesive experience once off the tram itself. Murdy has been talking a big game about this year's Scream version and it sounds as if it could be the first year that the TT will actually achieve it's potential. Of course I could be wrong. We could just get the same old shit + Ghostface. But with rumors of a giant cast, allusions to Stab-a-thon and what seems like the first totally emersive and cohesive theming, I am officially getting pumped.

Scream - I'm sure the entrance will genrally be the same as it is every year. I am curious to see how they do the Scream Go-Gos.

Zombieville - while this feels a little bit like Shaun of the Dead sans license, it seems like it could be funny and well done. Geriatric zombies? Sign me up.

The Reapers - a new theme for the chainsaw brigades of the lower lot that seems like it could be cool. It all depends on the character design since that is the only real difference year to year down there (I kinda miss that original hillbilly SZ. the SAs were really playing it up that year). I have high hopes that these dudes will look scary and imposing and I honestly hope they bring back the drill team style tactics of 2007.

Clowns - (again, I refuse to spell it with either a K or a Z) I am okay with the return of the clowns. Personally I feel that the whole concept in general is a little tired, as every Haunt ever continues to be obsessed with evil clowns (I actually tend to feel the same way about zombies) but the public loves them and tons of people are inherently scared of them so it usually works.

Freakz - It is a little underwhelming to bring this back for a third year but at the same time, I really enjoy the character design and the SAs were pretty top notch the last two seasons. I always preach that the theme of the SZ is somewhat insignificant as they all boil down to fog + roving monsters = scary.

So there you have it. Overall I feel like this is the first year that the event is firing on all cyllinders. I kind of feel like it's going to be 2008 all over again (this is of course a good thing) but with a larger scope to the event in general. I believe this year we are fully turning a corner that puts us on similar ground to USO and well ahead of Knotts. I just bought my tickets. Let the countdown commence!

This technically has nothing to do with the event itself but our website always feels so thrown together does it not? Seriously, who is writing the copy? It is so awkward and clunky and the horror puns aren't even of moderate quality. At the end of the day it probably isn't worth it for them to put more money and time into making it awesome but I could write better descriptions of mazes and SZs in like, 10 minutes. Orlando's site also has horribly clunky copy but at least it is interactive and looks cool.

^ Agreed. I'd honestly would like something a bit more simple as my computer is a piece of crap and both sites take forever to load. Even Knotts site takes long.

Really cool backgrounds, some music, a trailer for the event and a lot of links to click on would make me happy.

I think you're right. There will obviously have to be some adjustment to the area but I don't really see Uni giving us an extra maze only to axe it the following season. If the event is just as profitable as it has been (which I am confident it will be) I expect it will continue to expand slightly until they have the perfect balance of attractions much as Orlando has (albeit they nailed down their winning formula years ago). Plus, I think having 2 mazes on the lower lot is genius because it gives us more to do down there (aside from rides that are virtually unchanged from their daytime versions) and will probably alliviate the long lines that form at the formerly singular maze. I would love to eventually see 7 mazes, 6 scare zones and maybe 2 shows. With USH's limited space and the time constraints of the event I don't think they can logistically add much more than that anyway.

Surprised nobody put this up yet. This is the email that Uni is using to promote HHN this year.

I find this to be a tad bit unusual in a couple areas. Let's discuss:

1) I'm actually surprised that they're going with The Thing as the main promotion this year. Well, not SURPRISED as it is a Uni property but it's one of their bigger gambles and experiments and from what Murdy has been saying, I figured it'd be Ghostface front and center. As you can tell, this is also the image they use for most of the website. I can see them actually using this for billboards and cups and such. So Ghostface as the main icon? Not so much but at least he gots the biggest attraction and a scarezone.

2) Half of the maze properties not represented. No Alice Cooper? No Wolfman? No HOTC? (a bit understandable on that last one).

3) Hostel getting that image. For one, it's VERY violent so I'm surprised they're going with that, especially if it'll be on cups and such. Didn't know that was even allowed! And another thing, it was never used (or at least I don't believe it was) as apart of the main marketing campaign for either movie.

I can understand Hostel but we're assuming there will be Fast food cups this year remember last year there were no cups and with at least 7 properties at this years event we cant expect all of them to be represented in cup form if we have cups this year even the Thing logo is kind of violent and disturbing mos likely if the cups come back only Scream La Llorona Capt Spaulding and wolfman will be present also last time we had cups we only had three properties Saw, My Bloody Valentine, and Halloween and all there main characters arnt over the top disturbing, a dummy, a miner and a william shatner mask.

I personally like the ad, and can see why they choose those three houses to represent over everything else. One appeals to the large latin-american population in the area, another shows there will be a house similar to what has been there most popular house the last two years, and the last (Scream) is the big name that will draw people in like Freddy, and Jigsaw have in years past. I'm also really happy they dont seem to have a true icon in the ad, and that the largest image is a universal original creation. While it isn't an icon, I think this is a step towards bringing a original icon back to the event next year. The GP will have a year without a hollywood named icon, and so when a new icon pops up next year, there wont be complaints about it not being someone famous like the year before it. Just a thought though

I've talked about this before on here but if anybody wants to go for a run/jog/walk through a good majority of the backlot during the daytime, I found another 5k coming up:

http://www.saynotodrugsrace.org/

Only thirty bucks, plus a breakfast. It's at 7:30 AM. A lot of fun just to trot around the backlot considering you can only do that during Terror Tram and a lot of the areas open are places you normally wouldn't go.

I remember the year I went, it started in the Square of Warriors, went around the back way behind the prop house/Red Sea and then we went up a hill and went across the bungalows. Up the hill to where the falling bridge is, through the area where all the cars are and all the way to the Whorehouse set, up to the Grinch. Somehow, I remember cutting across behind Falls Lake and coming back down to Psycho Psycho (back then, WotW wasn't up yet) and then finding our way back to the Square of Warriors. Lots of fun, I recommend it to anyone who wants to get a better, at your own pace, look of the backlot.

aka House of 1000 Corpses set! ;)

Thanks for the info, DTH. That sounds like a lot of fun. Anyone here going? If so, make sure to get some TT construction pics.

(Five days later, after the race. Photos go online. Pics of a hotel being constructed on the backlot. Fan reaction...)

OMG THE SHINING!!!

Does anyone else feel that Scream is poorly represented on the website?

It's supposed to be the main icon/attraction, yet, I don't see a single logo or picture of it anywhere.

Clicking on the Terror Tram link, it just gives the name and a description. To any regular person, "Scream 4 Your Life" and "Ghostface Killer" could mean anything as "Scream 4 Your Life" possibly could be some generic horror name an attraction would be called and having a "Ghostface" murderer could sound like a generic sounding Halloween masked monster.

In fact, they don't really say "Ghostface" too much in the Scream films, so I could see this EASILY going over a lot of people's heads until one actually gets there.

They really should be using the image and logo to pull people in with the Terror Tram but they're just sticking with a name that quite possibly might not click in people's minds as to what it is exactly, despite a 4th film in the Scream franchise coming out this year (which, not a lot of people saw, I might add).

They really should throw Ghostface's face on there... or a logo at least... pronto.
