    HHN29 Review

Here's my honest review for Halloween Horror Nights 29. First off I have made a total of 14 trips to this year's event all the way from the beginning all the way to the last night. I have also read a few other reviews of this year's event and most of them are pretty similar in ranking, which never quite happens in the HHN fan community. Houses: 1) - Universal Monsters. This house was my overall favorite. Every time my friends and I walked through, we got every single scare. I may sound a bit biased, because I love Universal Classic Monsters, so I already ranked this house as my top favorite. But, every time I went into the house, I couldn't find a single thing to hate. The Wolfman, Dracula, Dracula's Brides, The Creature from the Black Lagoon, and Frankenstein's Bride gave me most of the scares. 2) - Graveyard Games. This house was another of my top ranked simply for the fact that it reminded me of old Halloween haunts featuring a graveyard as the general location. I loved how the scare audio ques were really loud and the scare actors never held back to frighten anyone. The dark/ soundless room at the end scared me to death the first night because it was pitch black and you didn't know what was going to happen. My only problem with the house was just the constant stopping and hold ups within the house itself. Other than that, really great house. 3) - Yeti: Terror of the Yukon. Didn't know what to expect from this house, but boy oh boy did it deliver. In the beginning of the event, the house seemed a bit all over the place with scare actors standing in plain sight. But as the event moved on, the people in the house evolved. Every walkthrough I got different scares than the previous visit. Those yeti's at the end always got me and the people with the guns. Basically, it grew on me and was considered a bottom ranked house in the very beginning. 4) - US. When Universal announced US as a house, I was disappointed. My friends and I gave this house such crap that we considered not going in it at all. We quickly ate our words. This house really was truly identical to the movie and the scares were there. The boy with the white mask, the father, and the twin daughters always got us. The last room with all the duplicates freaked us out every time. The only problems with this house was that in the middle of the event, it seemed like they cut back on a few actors and the house seemed brighter than normal. Also towards the end of the event, we went into the house while cast changed took place. Overall, good house. 5) - Nightingales: Blood Pit. This house made me smile so much because I remember the first Nightingales house from HHN 21. At the beginning of the event, I found this house to be extremely terrifying. The actors really brought their A game and made everyone scream. For me the best part of the whole house was the awful smell, which a Unmasking The Horror Tour guide confirmed its a mix aroma of dirt, sweat and blood. For the first time, a scent in a Horror Nights house made me gag. However, I've noticed that as the event went on, they really cut back on the smell and the scare actors. I've noticed the missing scare actors because there where a lot of empty rooms where the actors would normally be. 6) - Depths pf Fear. At first this house didn't scare me. Then one night with 30min left till HHN closed, a friend of mine and myself went inside and it was a completely different experience. We got all the scares and it gave a new perception of the house. It disappointed me to hear that the large fish monsters had to be cut back due the injuries they would inflict on the scare actors, and it disappointed me to hear a rumor that Universal would change the house due to the dead dog. But overall, the scares to me are hit or miss and the only scary things in the house were the arm reaching down on you and the mutating sea crew. 7) - House of 1000 Corpses. This house was one of my original top 3, but I got tired over it quickly. The scares to me, are extremely hit or miss and every time I walked through the house it was during a cast change. It was pretty good in the beginning of the event, but as time went on, it got worse. The scare actors seemed like they didn't want to be in the house anymore and it showed in their performances. The only scare actors who tried to keep the character alive was Capt. Spalding, Otis, and Baby Firefly. 8) - Killer Klowns From Outer Space. Last year at HHN 27, when Killer Klowns was a scare zone, I didn't like it. So when it was announced as a house, I didn't love it or hate it. During the beginning of the event, it was really good. Now this house is not at all scary, more of like a comedy house. I miss the comedy houses and I'm glad they brought it back this year. But once again as the event got closer to the end, a few actors and special effects went missing. Towards the end, I didn't care if I went through it or not. 9) - Ghostbusters. One of my original top 3. Anyone who enjoys this house are the people who have grown up watching Ghostbusters or have seen it as a child. I am a fan of this movie and I loved walking through the house, didn't really care if the house was scary or not. I really liked how they tried to incorporate scares with the ghosts and it worked. But sadly, a few effects broke or where turned off. The hologram of Slimer would be on or off. The face popping out of the door was turned off the last few nights, and the one ghost puppets must have broke off its support beam because you can see it lying on the floor. I know that effects eventually will malfunction and given that HHN is only a temporary event, there's no need to really fix the effects. Also the one thing I hated was the fact that the scare actors pretty much gave up near the ending of the event, except for the actresses who played Janine Melnitz. 10) - Stranger Things. This house was not my favorite. I didn't like it at all. The only props I give to the house are the actors. But the house overall was nothing special. Unless you love Stranger Things, then this house was awesome. I hated how the house only featured season 2 and very little of season 3. I just don't like Stranger Things as a house in general because its not scary at all, instead its just a typical walkthrough attraction. I can give this house a thumbs up for the length of it, considering last year's ST house was short. In overall, its a thumbs down for me. Scare Zones: 1) - Rob Zombie HellBilly Deluxe: Really felt like I was at a Rob Zombie concert and I had a few scares in here too. 2) - Vikings Undead: Really loved the props and costumes. Scares are hit or miss, butthe female Vikings always came after me. 3) - Zombieland Double Tap: Not a huge fane of the move, but it ha d a few scares. But saw a few scare actors break character to talk to people they knew. 4) - Vanity Ball: The only scary thing here was the nurses and patients. Don't believe that men in heels and dresses/ cloaks are scary. Sorry, trying not to hate, but not my thing. 5) - Anarch-Cade: DUMB. Glowing neon lights aren't scary. Appreciated the chainsaws though.
  3. HHN30 hopefully will be catered to hardcore HHN fans. My wishlist includes high usage of icons, a half/ half blend of ip and original houses, 6 scare zones that are actually scary, more chainsaw hordes, and better merchandise. I wouldn’t be mad if Stranger Things returns next year, but I would rather have American Horror Story make a return! For icons, I would happy if all of them return!!! Considering that it’ll be HHN 30, a reference to The Terra Queen would be highly appropriate. I also think if the water show should return, make it all about the icons.
  4. Should’ve typed a worming for what’s to come. My bad!
  5. I will first start off with the houses and then the scarezones. This is only a review from opening weekend and I plan to go up at least 7 more times. I know that things will change and adapt as the event goes on, so this review is just from opening weekend. HOUSES: 1). Trick r’ Treat- this house is my absolute favorite this year. Thought Universal did a fantasy job with this movie as a scare zone and I thought it was an awesome house. Every time I walked through this house, myself and my group would always get the scares. It’s very scenic and very well put together. 2). Scary Tales- I’ve always wanted to go through an official scary tales house for so long, and now it became a reality. This house is very beautiful to look at and for me, some what very comic. Love it when the witch flies over you at the facade and it took my breath away. My favorite scenes are the Hansel and Gretel, Three Little Pigs and Humpty Dumpy. My only criticism is hat it starts off slow and the scares are more towards the end. The last few rooms always get me! 3). Poltergeist- I will be 100% honest, I had very low expectations for this house and Universal did an awesome job. Loved how it’s very cold in this house and I love how you start in the pool. Every time I go through this house, I get scared in different places. I also love how this house travels into the television where you’re in the other side. But god I hate that clown. It gets me every time and I dont get scared that easily. 4). Dead Exposure- this house is great. Has a lot of scares and I couldn’t be more excited for any house. I love the strobe lights, which distort your vision and makes the scares intense. My thing is that the scares rely too much on the strobes and it’s a hit or miss. And I don’t really love how the ending is bright sand you can easily see the scare actors. Maybe they’ve changed it? But over all a great house. 5). Carnival Graveyard- this house for me was very hit or miss. Opening night we had all the scares, Saturday we missed the scares, Sunday we practically didn’t get any scares. But I love the story the house sets. It really does feel like you’re in an abandoned carnival, and has a junkyard vibe. This house also has a tone of Easter eggs with Jack, Dueling Dragons, HHN 27, and The Universal Palace Theater. And I love that there’s guest triggers, so watch out for them. 6). Blum House- I really wanted to hate this house, but I thought it was good. The Happy Death Day part was good. The baby masked guy got me 3 times. Then the purge area got me pretty good too. I haven’t seen the movie of The First Purge, so I didn’t know what to expect. This portion of the house was loud and the guy in the devil mask in sweats gets me every time and the shirtless guy at the end gets me every time too. I just find it odd that when you enter they make you walk to the corner of the room, then proceed to walk in. I also felt that this house was too rushed. 7). Slaughter Cinema- not a big fan. Love how the house is designed to be like an old school drive in theater, but it didn’t do anything for me. Love how the house is gory, but where are the scares? The whole entire weekend the cast wasn’t hitting their ques or maybe the house was having technical issues, idk. Still like going through it, but it’s not scary to me. 8). Stranger Things- I feel half and half on this one. I think the house setup is good, and I love that the facade is the opening credits. The few problems that I have with this house are as followed: too short, not enough characters, could’ve done more scenes and relied a lot on the demogorgon. Considering that this property is heavily advertised throughout all of HHN 28, I’d expect this house to be the “Uber” maze like AHS. Maybe it had something to do with their contract to the show, but the house to me feels incomplete. And to me, the last scene feels like Hollywood’s HHN, a black hallway with the demogorgon and eleven. Idk how I feel about this house just yet. 9). Seeds of Extinction- I could easily skip this house in future trips. I don’t really understand how this house is considered to be the new “Scarecrow” of HHN 28. I feel like the scare actors don’t know what they’re doing tbh. On opening night, the actors just stood and shooked around when their scare was activated. And there was a lot of open spaces. Friday night I was pleased that they toned down the lights where it became darker and I appreciated the scare actors trying to lunge towards the guests. However, the scares aren’t that good and it feels empty. Hopefully this will change. 10). Halloween 4- this is at the bottom because I think this house is just not that good. The first 2 times Universal tackled Halloween, the houses where great. This house just feels like it was a last minute idea. I think that Halloween 4 shouldn’t be in the shrek building, but maybe Blum House instead. SCARE ZONES: 1). Twisted Traditions- personally I love any scare zone in the Central Park area because it genuinely has the creepy woods vibe. Love that this scare zone is flooded with pumpkins. I think the costumes are well done and love the pumpkins in the trees. The scare zone is just overall creepy. 2). Vamp 85- I wanted to hate this zone because I HATED Vamp 55. But I take back every opinion I had on Vamp 85. Loved the characters and loved how they incorporated 80’s legends in this zone. I loved how the vampires actually would scare the guests. 3). Chucky- I love this scare zone for the simple fact that Chucky gets to insult the audience. Hopefully nobody complains and gets this removed. My complaint is that it feels abandoned. Not a lot of scare actors and feels very easy to run away from an actor. And the costumes are too colorful and very mediocre. 4). Killer Klownz from Outer Space- I think this zone could’ve been better. The costumes for the clowns are amazing and truest life like. I just hate how this zone is very small and it feels too much like a Disney character meet and greet. On opening day, every character had a line with people to take pictures with. Saturday and Sunday, security would dismiss the lines of people telling them to move on and even the actors refused to take some pictures. It’s still a good zone though. 5). The Harvest- this scare zone is very disappointing. The map and website description is very misleading. Talks about how every character from the houses will be present and it’s just house signs to the IP’s. When I heard that the scarecrows were coming back to be in this zone I was excited, and became disappointed. I think this zone was a last minute addition and the scares are non existent.
  6. Hi guys, don’t really post a lot but after opening night, I think this year is way better then last year. Yes it was insanely crowded, mostly due to Stranger Things. However, the houses and scare zones were really on point tonight. Of course a few things here and there can be tweaked, but it is opening weekend. Can’t wait for the rest of this season and let the scares live on!
  7. Trailer is dropping this Friday. Maybe HHN will announce the house? Tickets? Or both?
  8. When do you guys think all ticket platforms will go on sale? I’ve been seeing a few people on IU stating that it could go on sale this week considering they went on sale June 7 last year?
  9. For the original house announcement today, I’m wondering if anyone is thinking the same thing as me: Could this original house announcement be linked to an Icon reveal or maybe it’s an IP house, but with A&D’s spin? By spin I mean that they take the IP, and give it an original overlay. I think Icon because why would they announce an original house so early in the year? Or maybe it could be linked to an IP, like in 2007 with The Thing house and in 2014 with Alien Vs. Predator? I don’t really know, but what do you guys think?
  10. So after experiencing HHN for opening weekend, I had a fun time. This is only the first of my few trips, and these reviews will change. I will say that I think that the original houses are stronger than the IP's. So here's my ranking for houses. Houses: 1). Scarecrow - The house was dark, scary and the actors where awesome! Went through the house 4 times and every walk through, my group got the scares! So far my favorite house of the year!!!! 2). The Hive - Very dark and a few nods to what should have been. The vampires were creepy and disturbing. I've never felt so nervous in a house since 2010. Truely remarkable. 3). AHS - It had few scares, but I'm an overall fan of the show. Most terrified in the asylum and Roanoke areas. Coven I thought could've had more scare actors, but the house as a whole was very beautiful and true to the show. 4). The Fallen - This house reminds me a lot of Hades from HHN 20 and it was really cool. The house was visually stunning. To me it was loud and very in your face. Didn't see any "angels" and it was more like a demon house. But the scares are there for sure! The flying demons got me with every walk through. 5). SAW - I thought this house was good. My first run through, didn't get the scares and the timing was off a lot. After 2 more walk throughs, it grew on me. My group got some scares and we liked it. The pig guy is a majority of the house though. 6). Dead Waters - I really did like this house, the scares where there and it sticks true to bayou voodoo. The reason why it's so low is that the lighting was bad. I was first in my group and I kept bumping into so many walls, and I bumped into a few staff in black. 7). Ash vs. Evil Dead - I don't watch the series, but I'm familiar with the original Evil Dead movies. I didn't know what was going on a majority of the time, but I had a great time in the house. Lots of laughs and a few scares. 8). Blumhouse - I was expecting a lot from this house. But sadly enough, *spoilers* it was mainly insidious!!!!! Sinister had 2 rooms. Purge was a hall way, and the rest was insidious. However, a majority of the scares are in insidious. To me this house was a last minute idea. 9). The Shinning - I know I'm going to get comments, but this house should've never happened. To me it was more of a walk through museum and people kept stoping to look at Jack and the twins. My group encountered little scares. We had 2 jacks, the twins, old lady, and 3 bar tenders. It was just endless hallways. I know Universal couldn't design a house that would capture the whole hotel, but I thought they could've done more. Considering how I had doubts last year with The Exorcist, I loved the house and the scares. The Shinning, I developed an idea that if they can do The Exorcist, then The Shinning would be awesome. Sadly it was not. But I'm willing to give this house more chances because it takes a few days for Horror Nights to get better and things change constantly. I will say though that the Jack actors look a lot like from the movie.
  11. I still haven't gotten an email. It's been 3 days! I checked my emails, junk email, and other mails and nothing. I know it's probably because they got slammed with sign ups, but I was wondering if some people still haven't gotten an email yet?
  12. This will be my 8th year in a row. For HHN 20, 21, and 22, I only went up once a year and never bought express. For HHN 23, it was the first year I bought express and it was worth it! Then for HHN 24-26 I bought the ROF ticket without express only because I would go for 4 nights. It really does depend on how you plan out your nights. If you go for more then 2 nights, you really don't need express. But if you can only go up for a weekend, it's highly recommended. I remenber last year, on our first day we hit Lunatic's (5 times), Halloween, Texas Chain Saw, and TWD with in the first 4 hours. I know this year I'm getting the Ultimate Fear Pass and I cannot wait for this year's event!
  13. Thank god the tickets got announced and I love the theme of the website. It looks like a combo of Catacombs, Day of the Dead, and a hint of voodoo. At first I thought that The Voodoo Queen from HHN 24 was going to be the icon, because of the white skull inside the frame and with the lit candles. But then that slogan "all our times will come," sounds like Cindy. Or at least maybe the Caretaker making his return. Maybe The Caretaker and Cindy will be the icons of HHN 27? The story line would be that Albert Caine finally captured the soul of a victim and used it to bring Cindy to life! I think this because in HHN 12 or 16, Cindy was dead in Scream House and that's why The Caretaker is the way he is? So Cindy is brought to life, after many failed attempts, and is ready for her revenge! Hipefully soon, the icon is announced at midnight tonight, or at least sometime this month!
  14. Do you guys think that they'll have the tickets go on sale this week? Last year they went onsale on June 9, 2016 and that's literally in a few days and every year the ticket sales get released early every year. But considering the lack of info and announcements, who knows?
  15. Now that Volcano Bay is opened, HHN 27 announcements can start rolling in. I hope that they announce 2 house, ticket prices, and a possible icon in June. Then 2 houses in July, and lastly 1 house reveal in August with the full site reveal. I only say 2 considering how behind they are with the announcements. I think that the ip house drop rumor is somewhat false and true. It would be awesome to have 5 ip's and then 4 originals, but it would be cool to replace that lost ip with a new ip instead. I hope that if there's a theme for this year, it all ties together. Last year everything was seemed to be random, and the Chance icon with the theater concept was the main point, then of course things had to be changed for the ip's.
  16. Do HHN permits for the spring tents come before the S.S. & P.B.? Or is it just all random every year? On a side note, it's great that most of the construction for HHN has started! But I wish they could announce another house already!!!!
  17. Does anyone find this year to be very secretive? For example, the dates came late for HHN 27, considering ever since HHN23 or HHN24 the dates are revealed when the previous event is over. Also we only have 2 code names for Orlando, where as in Hollywood code names are being teased lady and right! And I have to agree that no body seems to have any theories to HHN 27, maybe the people who get inside info got cut off? Or maybe they're just tired of releasing info?? But I have to say that AHS will come back this year, it has to! I can see TWD coming back, considering it's return since 2012. It would be really cool if they did houses based on the following IP's: The Conjuring, Poltergeist, IT, Five Nights at Freddy's, Annabelle and Halloween 3. As for originals, it's a wild guess. For the scare zones, I hope they return to doing 6. I would also like them not to use all of the New York area as 1 scare zone. The Purge scare zone in 2014 was really good. The shadybrook zone in 2015 was ok. Survive or die from last year felt too open and not a lot of scares. And with New York, the story line always involves a city in peril or in destruction, but I think they can use that area for something more creative.
  18. Not exactly. A scare actor in a straight jacket wore his mouth muzzle. His chainsaw oil was featured in their VR house "The Repository." His muzzle is secretly hidden in one of the two theater heads' nose. Lastly I heard that he was in the survive or die scare zone on the last day of HHN 26. Also from my speculation, his HHN 16 video has appeared in some que lines during HHN 25 and HHN 26.
  19. If they really did an icon, that'll be awesome. But, I don't think we'll get an icon. For me it's like 50/50. However, It's been proven to the higher ups that people love the icons! Jack and the other icons were popular in 2015 with a lot of Jack merch sold, and that goes for Chance for 2016. Then again, there was a few hints and Easter eggs out in plain sight hinting about Eddie from last year. Maybe he could be the icon? But like I said, it's a 50/50.
  20. I know there's another forum for merchandise, but I'm just gonna post it here too. Here's some of this year's merchandise for HHN 26. This was found off of Universal Orlando's website under merchandise. These are obviously not all the merch, and the rest won't be revealed till we're closer to the event. https://www.universalorlando.com/Merchandise/ProductList.aspx?q=Halloween+horror+nights

  22. Yah, I went on the HHN Orlando Twitter page and saw the commercial. im really glad that they updated the website where the rides, shows, houses, and scare zones are in their own pull down menu.
  23. I think that we can all agree that the commercial for this year is dumb and lacking, and that both Orlando and Hollywood are sharing the commercial. It sucks that Chance wasn't in the commercial but her logo was. But earlier today I heard the radio advertisement, they highlighted TWD, The Exorcist, AHS, and TCSM, and at the end it mentioned "do you take a chance with the mistress of horror? You won't stand a chance," and their was a girlish giggle in the background. So my question is why would the radio mention chance, but not the commercial. Hopefully this isn't the full commercial.
  24. Is there a picture? The first post is just blank with a white image! But I hope the merch this year is good and includes all the houses on the house shirt!!!
