  1. The streets did spread out more on Opening Night. I'll write another review later in the run.
  2. Since this is the first year I will actually have time to go to Halloween Horror Nights as a guest, I thought I might give it a review. Halloween Horror Nights is the reason why I'm with the company. It has a special place in my heart. I started working for Universal during Halloween Horror Nights XV: Tales of Terror. I was only 17 when I was hired but luckily, I turned 18 on the first night of the event. Tonight was the Team Member Preview of Halloween Horror Nights 22. I didn't get to see everything I wanted to tonight because of the crowds, but I was content with what I did see. Before I go any further, I want to let anyone reading this know that I'm not going to say anything harsh about the event due to the fact that I work for the company. Not to mention the fact that a few of my friends were involved in the planning and creation of this year's event (who are also able to read this), so for the sake of keeping my job, I'll be gentle and just give some "constructive criticisms." The first topic of this review is the scarezones, or rather the "Street Experience." Due to the Superstar Parade, as well as the numerous construction projects, Universal was unable to create any actual scarezones this year, so instead, it was one big roaming scarezone. As a former street scareactor, I thought that all of the scareactors pulled it off. My only "constructive criticism" is that there were a lot of confusing mixtures of scaractors. Female Chainsaw-wielding prisoners mixed with Grim Reapers, Creepy Trick-or-Treaters mixed with vampires and Pumpkinheads; all of which did a great job scaring everyone, but needed to spread out a bit more. Other than that, the costumes looked great and it was nice to see my Pumkinhead character out there, even though he didn't SMELL like a pumpkin (Hollywood Street Cast 2010 knows what I mean). It’s now time to review the Houses that I was able to see. Seeing how it was preview night, I don't want to nitpick on any of the houses. It was the first night and they are still working out the kinks. There were a couple of houses that I was in line for that had to turn us away because of "technical difficulties," but I would rather that happen tonight during Team Member Preview, than to have it happen with real park guests. That way, it can be fixed and have everything run smoothly during the event. The first house on my list was "The Walking Dead: Dead Inside." The outside facade looked great with bodies piled up outside. It really set the tone for the rest of the house. The inside was no different. All of the "Walkers" did a great job with their scares. I liked the fact that the house covered many scenes from the show. The Hospital, the Department Store, the Barn, all of which had a lot of detail. There were a few places in the house that were, I think, a missed opportunity for scares, and I would have rather seen the actors in prosthetic makeup rather than masks as it would have given the house a more authentic feel, but overall, I thought it stayed true to the source material. I'm not going to give a letter grade just yet. I'll wait to do that after I've seen it a few more times. The next house was "Welcome to Silent Hill." Being a gamer as well as a fan of the "Silent Hill" video games, I had high expectations for this house. The house itself seemed to be more focused on the 2006 film. There were a few characters and scenes from the game but, most of the character designs looked how the did in the film. I missed Pyramid Head this time around but I'll try and find him next time. I was mainly wondering how the nurses were going to look, as they were my favorite monsters from the game. They weren't 100% accurate, but I was happy how they turned out. The actors playing the nurses did get some great scares but, they didn't move like a Silent Hill nurse. In the game (as well as the movie), the nurses had a "jerky" movement to them. I'll say again, I don't want to nitpick. Perhaps these girls have never played the game so, I'll give them some time to find the character. I will say this though, there was a lot of great teamwork between the scareactors. One would distract, and another would attack. All in all, it was a good house. The last, as well as my favorite house of the night was "Dead End." It's very difficult to scare me in a haunted house, but this one did the deed. I loved the set. It was very reminiscent of "Legendary Truth" from a few years back. The scareactors were a little more aggressive in this house. There were a lot of hidden "boo holes" around the house, some of which I thought were very clever. They didn't scare me; however, it was the "greenhouse" scene where I jumped in fear. There was a scareactor that had hidden themself incredibly well behind a table of plants. They made a plant vine whip in front of me and it gave me quite the scare. Bravo, to whoever that scareactor was. They deserve a "Boo Buck." Altogether, the house had a creepy atmosphere, great costumes, and great scares. My final review of the night is of “Bill & Ted’s Excellent Halloween Adventure.” This year had a very good plotline. I don't want to spoil the show for anyone who hasn't seen it yet, but believe me when I say; it was the best B&T show I've seen in a while. There were only a couple times where a joke fell flat, but the cast kept on going and put on a hell of a performance. The show didn't try and cram as many pop culture references as they could down your throat; the bits that they had really flowed with the story of the show. I was surprised that a few of the characters made it into the show being as how they are not owned by Universal Studios, but rather our neighboring company down the street. I'm interested to see if we are allowed to keep them in the show or if said company will force us to change them (a la 'Jack Sparrow' from a few years back). The show wasn't "bust-a-gut, laugh 'till your sides hurt" funny, but was VERY entertaining. It was one of the best iterations of the show in a while. I will definitely be seeing it again this year. I am looking forward to seeing more of the event in the days to come. There's a part of me that misses performing at HHN, but another part of me is glad to be able to experience the event from a guest's perspective. I'll be out there again to see more of "the premier Halloween event in the country." Happy Haunting!
