Halloween Horror Nights 2014 Scare actor Auditons

Recommended Posts

I'm demoting myself this year from MUA (at another park) and long time scare actor, previously retired from another park and attempting to get in with HHN this year as a scare actor. Haven't worked the scare floor since 2008 but we'll see if I'm still cut out for it. Auditioning Tuesday the 15th!

I can't edit/delete/etc my post above so forgive the double post but I have a questions that may be super stupid and silly but it really just occurred to me as I've spent the last 6 years as a MUA for a different theme park and five years prior to that as a scare actor at the same park so I pretty much "grew up" with everyone there and this was encouraged but ... does HHN hold tattoos and/or piercings against you (ON TOP OF BEING A FEMALE), when it comes down to hiring or even just passing you through the initial auditions? When I auditioned on a whim in 2007, I had two or three visible arm tattoos but since then have quarter sleeves and scattered art on my feet/legs/back/hips/etc, as well as stretched ears, nose and lip piercings (all of which I hide for my normal day job), but just want to know if I should show up for auditions covered and piercings hidden (minus ears) or just come as I am.

I have seen many people with large, visible tattoo's and piercings being cast for HHN. However, it might help to "hide" as much as possible so that they can decide what to do with you from what they see.

I'm going to cross my fingers that it's not 100+ temps like it has been, otherwise wearing longsleeves and pants is kind of going to suck. BUT, I'm going regardless and it's a small sacrifice for a great month of fun and scaring!

Do you get to choose were to work at or do they do it automatically? I'm guessing there's also an age gate?

You have to be 18 by the time orientation starts. You are cast into a specific role in a specific location - you don't get to choose.

It's inside the Hilton which is air conditioned, but yeah -- dress comfortably, don't worry about that.

I'm not too worried about it. Comfort? For scareactors? Thats a THING? Where have I been for ten years?

For HHN, they don't care. At all. They made that clear when I auditioned last year (And I joined late, during the pool auditions).

For regular Universal, however... Lol.

It must be fun to be one of the scare actors. I'm guessing it's also tiring too, like a typical day at HHN. Btw are there also rotations? Like for example, I substitute for a person in a maze because they have to leave early due to family issues. Overall, is there rotations?

Yeah, I'm screwed out of universal, Disney and knotts on off season due to body art and previous crazy hair colors. Eh, at least halloween time it's not a bad thing. And most/if not all of my tattoos are horror related. Still will probably show up in longsleeves/cover things up.

Within the maze or area you're assigned to, there are possible rotations, but you'd be told before even going in to costuming. I've switched like once 'cause someone was sick.

If you're in pool, you're more than likely a different role every day, filling in for people who left or are sick.

I know there's been times when someone's substituted for an entirely different maze, but I have no idea how that's chosen.

For the most part, you're sticking with the role you were given. :D

To elaborate, most maze roles will have "doubles" or sometimes "triples" of your same role. In other words, you tap your partner(s) out to go on break.

This can be true for scarezones, but in my case last year I didn't have a double for The Purge - instead, there were people I would typically go on/off set with.

If you're hoping to try a bunch of roles, hope to be cast in pool. The lead entertainment supervisor will choose where you get placed each night. Sometimes this leads to a permanent role if they need to fill a vacant spot (due to someone dropping, being sick, or any variety of reasons).

Hey, guys, I have a question that's prrrrrobably pretty obvious and dumb, but I thought it wouldn't hurt to ask anyway just to be sure. If you wear glasses, you probably don't have a good shot at being hired, right?

It depends, are you willing/able to wear corrective contact lenses for the duration of HHN? If so, I don't see it being a problem, several parks I've worked at had talent who wore glasses and they just got contacts for the season. Also the other thing to consider is if you do/can wear contacts, will you be comfortable enough wearing them in the environment: fog machines, strobe lights, dark spaces, etc.

That's what I thought. Honestly, I don't know if I'd be able to afford contacts, but you bring up good points about environment. Thank you for the input! I'll think it over and see what I can do, otherwise I'll have to cancel. It doesn't seem fair to hold up a spot unless I'm sure I could work, if hired.

You can't work without your glasses? You don't have to read to be a scareactor or anything. I didn't even own a pair of glasses last year and was able to work fine. Through a mask. But I'm not the blindest person in the world, either.

But you do gotta know whether or not your hand is gonna hit a person's face.
